UK General Election Thread
To start, some polls:
YouGov: CON 33%(-4), LAB 28%(-3), LDEM 30%(+8)
ComRes (Instant poll): CON 36%, LAB 24% and LDEM 35%
The YouGov with uniform swing would give Labour most seats yet fewest votes: CON 245, LAB 275, LDEM 99.

A Quotation
“When an American Government sets out to nationalise your banks, it makes your country less American. When an American government bails out your auto industry, it makes your country less American. When an American government decrees these massive increases in public spending and stimulus packages, it makes your country less American...

; when it socialises the economy in the name of climate change it makes your country less American, when it moves towards a European style of social security it makes your country less American, and when it seeks to nationalise your healthcare it makes your country less American. And in making it less American it makes it less independent and less prosperous and less free”
KaptinKool (408 D)

*gasp* is TGM ready to jump into the melting pot from his socialistic European hell?

Cambridge is the best uni in the world to read mathematics, and applying to an English university is easier for me, so I'm not leaving soon, however depending on the nature of America, it is very plausible that I would set sail.

I'll be starting at Trinity next October, exams pending.

And some, enough unfortunately, believe "less independent and less prosperous and less free" would be good.

The source is Daniel Hannan, one of my MEPs, and a great politician.

This is the speech it came from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuGPKnF0yjY&feature=related

holy crap man.

you're going to come to america?

but wherever will you live? you must ask yourself these questions.

if you really do agree with the above quotes.... i recommend texas. all state pride aside, it's the most prosperous and important conservative state. the taxes are low, etc.

But if you hate being surrounded by ignorant people you can always come live in Austin or Houston!

Well one way or another I actually kind of disagree with the quote lol. Not totally... but moderately.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
16 Apr 10 UTC
@Thuc. Not until I've finished education, and I clearly haven't any plans, but I could well imagine it. I just don't know, but America fits my ideals orders of magnitude better than Britain. We'll see, but for now I'm okay just sticking up for a country I consider great and yet which my own countrymen defame constantly.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

So in other words, it is kinda a recurring dream of mine.
KaptinKool (408 D)
16 Apr 10 UTC
@TGM - are you planning on being a mathematician at a university or something?
Chrispminis (916 D)
16 Apr 10 UTC
Math degrees can be applied to much more than that.

Also, you should consider moving to somewhere like Hong Kong. Hugely free market and you'll probably get great contacts just by being white and educated. =D
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
16 Apr 10 UTC
@ Kaptin, it is very tempting.

@ Chris, I do quite like Hong Kong too; New Zealand is similarly good, but I kinda like America's cities :)
KaptinKool (408 D)
16 Apr 10 UTC
@Chrispminis - I don't doubt that, I'm just not aware of the market applications of a degree in mathematics. Most of the useful applications I'm aware use different degree's (e.g. engineering, accountant, actuarial business etc.). I'm sure that there are applications, I just wanted to know what TGM wanted to do (and I don't really know what the applications are).
KaptinKool (408 D)
16 Apr 10 UTC
@TGM - cool, where would you want to go?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
16 Apr 10 UTC
Applications: financial services, science are the biggest ones.

If we're talking in world is my oyster terms, Princeton and Trinity, Cambridge have to go right to the top.
baumhaeuer (245 D)

The accuracy of the quote would depend on the exact definition of "American" that the guy was thinking of...
Big government and socialization certaintly contradict the cowboy-do-it-youself image.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
17 Apr 10 UTC
Clearly from the quote, "less American" is being defined as "less independent and less prosperous and less free".
ottovanbis (150 DX)
17 Apr 10 UTC
The cowboy do it yourself image is a bunch of bullshit anyway, realistically, never existed. Whose quote is this anyway?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
17 Apr 10 UTC
otto, look up^^
ottovanbis (150 DX)
17 Apr 10 UTC
mmmmk gotcha, interesting, little too rigid to be accurate, but intriguing opinion nonetheless
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
17 Apr 10 UTC
i agree with the quote. america has and is moving more and more socialist everytime obama makes a decision. although i agree that there has to be a fair balance between freedom and protection, i see our presidents decisions as acts against our constitution and against the freedoms of this country.if our president pushes his 'will' on this country without regard to majority opinion and desire or even without regard to the what this country had as its foundation as he has thus far, and if we as a country continue to let him then i see us flushing every scrap of freedom and morality we have left down the toilet.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
17 Apr 10 UTC
You should really watch the whole speech, it is very good indeed.
baumhaeuer (245 D)
17 Apr 10 UTC
@Alderian: "American," by the phrasing, seems to me to indicate some principle aside from the 3 less's.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
17 Apr 10 UTC
It's clear he's talking about Jeffersonian democratic principles from the context.
ottovanbis (150 DX)
18 Apr 10 UTC
So he's a constitutionalist? Because if he's not, he has no business making that kind of argument. Why are they never considered Hamiltonian democratic principles?? If the country had truly followed a Jeffersonian path of freedom, holy shit, realization, it has, all our manufacturing IS outside the US, lol, wow. Hamilton was the big capitalist, not Jefferson, and since it seems here that democracy has so intimately been defined by laissez fair government and capitalism, it's not hard to pound out this thesis.
