Spot the liar...
Michael Howard or David Cameron (See inside)
Maniac (189 D(B))

"The British people should feel confident that they can get on with
their lives while their Government concentrates on tackling the
practical problems which matter to them." Michael Howard 2005

At a launch event at Battersea power station, the Tory leader [David Cameron] said that politicians for the last 40 years had perpetuated the "lie" that Westminster politicians could bring change on their own. 2010

Was Michael Howard lying to me in 2005? Or is David Cameron lying to me now?
Stukus (2126 D)

I would say Michael Howard was.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
13 Apr 10 UTC
Why did Howard say that? He was part of the opposition, not the government, in 2005.
Octavious (2701 D)

Do those statements really contradict each other? I'm sure Howard and Cameron both have been guilty of far more important deceptions than the possible one here. I know that Brown certainly has.
Maniac (189 D(B))
14 Apr 10 UTC
@Jamie - Howard said it in his manifesto of 2006. He wanted to lead a government that would change things whilst people got on with their lives.

I'm pretty sure almost everyone agrees that Thatcher/Reagan brought change. The question remains whether or not it was good change.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
14 Apr 10 UTC
In Thatcher's case it was definitely a negative change. Tens of thousands of people changed from having jobs to being unemployed.

Jobs in industries that we're going bust anyway, Jamiet. No-one was describing Britain as the sick man of Europe in 1990, no Winter of discontent.

Anyway, I haven't the time or energy to start another debate about Thatcher, the point that she achieved change doesn't demand it.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)

"Jobs in industries that we're going bust anyway, Jamiet"

Wrong. I'm talking about people who were working in coal mines and shipyards that were productive and profitable when Thatcher shut them down.
Maniac (189 D(B))
14 Apr 10 UTC
@Jamiet - I'm no fan of Thatcher, trust me. But no-one closes productive and profitable businesses.

@Ghost - Thatcher said, "Where there is discord, may we bring harmony. Where there is error, may we bring truth. Where there is doubt, may we bring faith. And where there is despair, may we bring hope" Do you think that she was just peddling a lie as Cameron seems to be suggesting all the politicains in the last 40 years did.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
14 Apr 10 UTC
@Maniac, I don't think that that was an appropriate thing for Thatcher to quote, it wasn't what she was about.

However, I don't think that she didn't really change the nature of Britain.

Regarding the original post, why can't it be a legitimate difference of opinion between Cameron and Howard?
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
14 Apr 10 UTC
@ TGM: "why can't it be a legitimate difference of opinion between Cameron and Howard?"

It could be. But this nonetheless implies that by saying "politicians for the last 40 years had perpetuated the lie..." Cameron is accusing Michael Howard (and indeed Thatcher and Major and every other Tory leader for the last 40 years) of lying.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
14 Apr 10 UTC
Also, Cameron was saying that no politician could solve *all* the problems *by himself*. The idea is that you enable the people to solve them themselves. It is a different idea to Howard's, but it is a difference of opinion, not a matter of one or other of them lying.
Maniac (189 D(B))
14 Apr 10 UTC
@Ghost - If Cameron wasn't calling Howard, Thatcher and Major liars, who was he referring to?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
14 Apr 10 UTC
Ok

Cameron was calling them liars.
I do not think they were not lying, even though they may have been wrong to think that they can change things.
So Cameron was wrong.

Simples
Maniac (189 D(B))

@Ghost - understood, strange that Cameron should think he could win an election by caslling all his predecessors liars.

Do ghost ratings take into account a difference between press and no press?
I am just wondering if ghost ratings take into account different types of games? I have only played gunboat or public press games on here, simply because of time constraints/internet access issues. However, it occurred to me that the gunboat vs. regular are so totally different games that maybe there should be two different ratings systems.

First time creating a game, gave it 5 days for people to join, at the moment it looks like it might not quite be full at the start time.

What would happen once the start time is reached?

Today On The Philosopher's Corner: Kant's Categorical vs. Mill's Action-and-Utility
I LOVE Philosophy. And I LOVE my Philosophy of Ethics class in the college I go to- the class is active and actually inquisitive, great material, and the professor's hilarious, engaging, and sharp, Dr. Zhu. (THICK accent.) In our class, every session there's a showdown: its obiwanobiwan vs. The Cop (both of us share the actual real name.) I champion Mill, and ACT Utilitarianism. The Cop, being used to strictness and cold law, LOVES Kant. Categorical vs. Utility?

Javascript Timeouts when entering orders on World Variant
I am not entirely sure where this goes, so if I am posting in the wrong spot, please redirect me. In a world variant in which I am playing (http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=20858), when I (and it appears others) try to either convoy an army or move an army that borders the sea, entering the final combo box of the order takes a very long time and I recently had to click the "No" button to allow Internet Explorer to continue around 16-18 times per order to get them to "stick".
