"real" games on goodip?
What a joke.
90% of the users there don't know the difference between cutting a support and supporting a unit to hold.
If you like it so much then why did you register here?
DominicHJ (100 D)
16 Feb 10 UTC
And you can say that 'cause you've played there so much, right?
hellalt (24 D)

I know that the best players of this site don't care to play at goondip cause it's full of shitty unbalanced variants and bugs as well...
DominicHJ (100 D)
16 Feb 10 UTC
The longest downtime I've seen due to a bug happened on webdip, not on goondip. Further, all the downtimes I've had on goondip were very, very short.

As for the "shitty unbalanced variants", no one forces you to play them. And if you the classic map an example of a perfectly balanced map, you are just stupid. Except for a few maps where some countries are really disfavoured, diplomacy is more important than the rest. But of course, that's why you don't like it, you suck too much at diplomacy so you have to play gunboat.
hellalt (24 D)
16 Feb 10 UTC
like I said before if you like goondip so much then you get the fuck outta here.
the classic map may not be perfect but the rest of them are so unbalanced that a noob like yourself can win against a real diplomat, like myself.
I like your nerve but you wouldn't stand 2 years in a game with me.
Just take a look at your stats and mine poor poor stupid little noob...
hellalt (24 D)

Now, do not respond to this unless you finish 10 games in this site. Till then you have no right to talk to me noob.

I partially agree with DominicHJ on the phase, "gunboat games are for noobs."

However, it hints the wrong way. Gunboat is a style of play that is hardly the same as diplomacy. I find it hard to justify calling gunboat a diplomacy variant at all since you've taken away the very title of the game. Although, gunboat is diplomacy without any of the diplomacy, so in a way, its an easy way to learn the rules without the social strategy.

I've never played on goondip, im enjoying playing here too much to look elsewhere.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I think it's cute how hellalt's feelings are still hurt about goondip.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
16 Feb 10 UTC
Floating: that's just not true.
There is definite diplomacy on gunboat, albeit limited. You can offer supports you can attack you can stab etc etc.

Also, It is clearly not diplomacy, but equally they are clearly related. As such surely it *has* to be a variant by definition.

Also, the comment about it being for n00bs. Sure its often played by new players, but they're not the only ones. I know a successful player on the site who's tried gunboat a number of times and can't get it to go well, yet I know "n00bs" who are good at it - I know its not strong evidence, but this does help show that there is skill in gunboat.

Out of interest, how many gunboat games have you played?
FloatingLakes (5034 D)
16 Feb 10 UTC
I suppose that's true, there are some aspects of diplomacy in it. So I takeback my statemate about it being completely without diplomacy, How about completely without "verbal" diplomacy?

And I also agree that it is not just for noobs. Hence my first sentence saying I only partially agree. You are right that anyone can play it and be experienced with it.

I've never played a gunboat game actually. Yup, not one. I just like the messaging part too much to play a game without it. I wasn't posting based on my experience with gunboat as I clearly have none. I just wanted to attempt to bring some sanity to a thread where the entire argument was, "Noob! no, you're the noob!"
DominicHJ (100 D)
16 Feb 10 UTC
Indeed, very hurt for being banned for being such an obvious twit. "If you like goondip so much then get the fuck out of here"? Man, you are pathetic. It's not because you were too stupid to be allowed on both that we can't play on both if we wish.

My games? Hell if I care for my record, most of my games are gamed I joined when a fucked up nation went CD, and I was like "Hey, this looks fun, a screwed country!" And honestly, your record has nothing impressive in it either.

A real pro could win on any map given to him, no matter if it's unbalanced or not. It's all about diplomacy and making others do what you want them to. People who can't do that play gunboat.
jwalters93 (288 D)
16 Feb 10 UTC
question; what is "goondip"? it's apparently some sort of online diplomacy website, but from what i'm reading, it's not that great.
jwalters93 (288 D)
16 Feb 10 UTC
never mind.....looked it up on google, and i really don't want to be on two sites for diplomacy. besides, i'm unsure of why you would play anything other than the regular map. i mean sure, you have more players and more SC's, but that means you have to rely on others more in the early game, and you have to get more than 18 SC's to win. at would just take to long. (yes i know that regular games take a long time, but it would get annoying after awhile)
stratagos (3269 D(S))

goondip is a fork of webdip where variants are tested. hellat is not welcome there because he annoyed the owner.
jwalters93 (288 D)
16 Feb 10 UTC
and i agree with DominicHJ. my brother plays this game, and he's a silver toungued devil. he can make just about anyone do just about anything. it's actually really annoying, because twice i've found myself in a terrible position because he put me there.and then i lost.

just out of curiosity, has anyone played the actual board game? it's so much more fun and challenging in person. don't get me wrong, online is fun, but in person is better.
jwalters93 (288 D)
16 Feb 10 UTC

DominicHJ (100 D)
16 Feb 10 UTC
Hellalt was banned because the *first* thing he did when he joined was to start insulting the owner, making jokes about his family and sending him disrespectful private messages. You get a taste here of his attitude.

@jwalters93 Why play variants? Not all of them are big. Webdip has a variant now, and it's pretty big (far from my favourite variant), but a lot of variants are actually smaller than the standard map, and a lot of variants actually use the classical map but with a few minor tweaks. But why play variants? For me, it's diversity, really. Playing the same map over and over, after having tried with all nations, gets a little redundant. Not in what will happen, as that will always change, but in the logic of things. The geography dictates a lot of strategy and diplomacy (people will not want to make alliances that will prevent their expansion). Different maps therefore allow me to play completely different scenarios, forces me to analyze the layout of the land before me and make up strategy on the spot by myself. Forces me to be able to get things right the first time instead of simply playing (with people who play) a thousand times good strategies are understood. Also, the classical map is very limiting in terms of alliances, I find, by the relatively low number of players and number of connections between them.
DominicHJ (100 D)
16 Feb 10 UTC
I have the board game, but I also occasionally draw out variants to play with friends. Learned to play on the classical map of the board game, though.

Enjoy gunboating on the same map 1000000 times in a row, noob.
hellalt (24 D)
17 Feb 10 UTC
gunboat or not, every single time it's a different game.
Having played 4 games so far you probably can;t understand the feeling...
DominicHJ (100 D)
17 Feb 10 UTC
You assume I never played before joining webdip, and never played anywhere else than here. That's pretty sad.

Of course, specifics will change, but the same logic persists, same overall strategies, same series of moves if certain conditions are met. The diplomacy part of the game is what allows the most variety, where other games rely on luck. A game with no luck (other than starting country), no variety (same map, rules), and no diplomacy (communication) makes for a very redundant system, no matter how long (or not) it takes for one to tire.
DominicHJ (100 D)
17 Feb 10 UTC
To me, it's like StarCraft. Some of my friends preffer the more "pure" Melee or Free For All settings, while I the Use Map Settings. Of course, I like battles in the classical version of the game, but in the end you're just fine-tuning and microing the same build orders over and over.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
17 Feb 10 UTC
Woah woah woah! Don't talk shit about Starcraft!
hellalt (24 D)
17 Feb 10 UTC
Actually I never expected to say that but I'm starting to prefer the diplomacy part than the tactics part.
You can even have your units stand still and control moves all over the board with words.
That's pretty amazing discovery for a war maniac like me.
starcraft? is it worth it?
DominicHJ (100 D)
17 Feb 10 UTC
Hey, I'm not talking shit, I'm just saying that I get bored if I don't play a few Use-Map-Settings between all these Melee games. :P
jimgov (219 D(B))
17 Feb 10 UTC
Then, DominicHJ, go ahead and play them. No one here is stopping you. But, coming on a site to just complain about it and pump up a rival site is a little low.

"Phase length" apply to moves/retreats/builds?
I'm looking for a new Diplomacy website to migrate a group of players over to, and I'm investigating this one. Looking at the game set-up options, I don't see the ability to set one time for moves (e.g. 2 days) and another for retreats/builds (e.g. 12 hours). Can anyone let me know if this option is available, or does the "Phase length" option apply uniformly to moves, retreats, and builds?

Thanks.
