Touch Diplomacy

Figle just mentioned this variant and it sounded cool. Basically, you can only communicate with nations that you're currently touching. To make things simple, I think the best criterion is for touching to mean that a territory of your color is touching a territory of their color. Seas are not considered, nor are units. This'll be run on the honor system, and yes, it does mean that for a year, England doesn't get to talk, but I think it can be a fun game. Who's in?

When I played, we allowed one global message of [?] characters each year (so you had to choose which season to use it in).
Also, we defined touching as one of your units could invade on of their coloured territories. This had the added interest because you had to choose to leave a unit with an ally to co-ordinate orders or send it to the fronts to fight. Also, you could reach situations where one ally could talk and the other not reply.

ET can't communicate for most of the game if you don't allow any global chat.

i'm a huge fan of touch and fog of war.
i'd like to see touch x (communicate with people who are x moves away) and fog of war x (see map components which are x moves away) it should be easy enough to implement, i think touch 2, FoW 1 would be entertaining.

i know touch comms would give away some info about the fog, but i think that is ok, also with the lack of information due to fog i'd prefer to increase the amount of communication so there is more scope for deception...

I guess so. It was more a case of trying to think through how it would translate to the real-world situation.
I've also decided that makes sense - you could both have sent a messenger into the territory between.

Is there any clever technique to make a real gameboard able to support a fog of war game? I suppose you'd have to have a 'judge' as it says in the official rulebook.

Idea for mod communication

I know that, for the World Cup, we are having all kinds of trouble getting people to respond to their emails and PMs, causing all kinds of waiting. And I know that the mods have to try to get with people here and there about different things.
