Well in my opinion, if America,(or any aspect of it) collapses, some people will intentionally take some part in the collapsing.
Those people will probably be happy

Well right now my country reminds me a lot of Imperial Spain of 1500s. Corrupt officals over numbering the good ones by a disturbing amount, failing economy, leaders of poor ability one after another, no I don't like Bush nor do I believe Obama will save us all and the piling amount of enemies and "imperial overstrech" too many bases doing too little and of course Afghanistan and Iraq a complete lose lose sitution, which I suppose is the equal to the Netherlands of the 1500s. And to many government projects and programs with a short-term goals and aims.

Yeah, and the national debt is projected by the GAO to double in some short amount of time - according to reports released in the past couple of months. I think it was a max of in 10 years...? Yeah, America's not doing so hot...China, on the other hand, can't wait to call in our debt...

The US is in no position to decline:
1. Most of the international investment coming from Asia (China, India, oil-rich Middle East, Pacific) and South America goes into the US. The US has become like an investment bank holding trillions of other people's money. Noone will let you default on this :)

2. As inefficient as the US government may be, when it comes to the (private) business side, the US represent the most efficient (and inhumane from a social perspective) environment. For us, Europeans, you're a bunch of workaholics, obsessed with competitiveness and professional success, so we're happy to let you do all the work and push the world forward economically and scientifically, as long as you don't get so crazy as to invade us all :)

Sure, many people would be happy if the US falls, but surely not the ones with financial and political power. You need to keep working for the rest of us all to be able to have a life :)

Yeah, it is nice to hear Europeans say nice things about America, lol - I have friends who have plenty of nice things to say it's just some make it sound like Europe hates America. That said, even if people won't let us fail (kinda like what the US government did with the big firms that started collapsing last fall) once our government has to be rescued by other countries we're more or less between a rock and a hard place...to put it lightly.

I don't see the US remaining such a prolific power once others are footing the bill for our deficit spending that has built up over the years. But that's just an opinion, I'm not a professional/academic economist or anything.
