Game Limit
I know there are no limits to the number of games you can play at one time. Does anyone have their own personal limits, though? I find that if I play too few games I am eager to join more, but every once in a while I join a few too many games and lose focus and miss a few moves here and there. What are your thoughts?

I think a good guideline is:
2-4 nonpress games
2-4 short deadline games <24 hrs / turn
2-4 longer deadline games >24 hrs / turn

Lately I have started exchanging long-deadline games for no-press or short deadlines though.

So 6-12 at the same time I would say: though when I was up in the 10-12 games range - it sure was hard work! I've only had a total of 1 NMR though - which I'm proud of.

What do you mean by nonpress?
Perry6006 (5409 D)

I mean games where No in-game communication are allowed

I have set myself a limit of only being in 5 or fewer games at once. More than that and I lose focus.

When leagues and tournaments are running (when aren't they anymore :-) ) I try to limit myself to 3 or fewer regular games (usually fewer) and almost never play anything with less than 24 hour turns, although the occassional 18 hour turn game creeps in.

I'm thinking more around 5 for me. I don't know how you play so many Perry, though I wish I could handle that gameload!

Thanks for the advice Jamie and Draug.

i agree with draugnar. with a new masters game looming and a new league game coming in a fortnight, i am feeling like i will be overwhelmed, and i only have three "regular" games going right now. but that makes for six in total and i guess i'll be up to eight in the next couple of weeks. six is my preferred upper limit though.

I play a lot of gunboat games to keep my tactical mind spinning, but since actual diplomacy takes so much attention, I limit myself to two games and none during leagues.

The occasional live game creeps in every once and a while, more this week because my league-mates are absent and I've been ill.

This is sort of changing topic Geofram, but what do you do differently in gunboat games? I played one and was out in 2 years.

sorry, i am a noob :D what is a gunboat game?
Perry6006 (5409 D)

Gunboat can mean:
1) No in game messaging allowed
and/or
2) The player are anonymous
Draugnar (0 DX)

Actually, gunboat is no messaging, period. Anon is anonymous. Gunboat may be anonymous but that isn't what makes it gunboat.

The trick is to not get tricked into thinking you can handle more than you can because you have one day of particular boredom at the computer and no one is replying to you. Keeping up with games means during the busy times as well.

I usually keep it between 5 and 8, which is fairly high, but my fastest game is 36 hours, and some are super slow, which I think helps alot.
Geofram (130 D(B))

To me a gunboat game always means no in-game messaging, anonymity does not matter, but I have seen public-press (global chat only) games use the term gunboat before.

In a game allowing no messaging, you must try to predict the others' actions and more importantly, make your actions unpredictable. An unexpected bounce can be the difference in a gunboat game.

Supporting a unit to hold that doesn't need it is a good way to lure someone into a sense of security with you, only to take it back next round.

If you find yourself with a lot of time, play public press games, they are attention whores but well worth the reward.

I try to keep it down to three or so games with actual diplomacy, but I'm new. I think I would be up for more, but in situations where I have the same country in multiple games, I easily get my wires crossed. I'm in a situation like that right now: two games as Russia in approximately the same season. Harder for me to juggle.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Down to 1 game right now but the first league game is supposed to be starting soon. And then the second league game and third masters game should also be starting pretty soon. So I'm not jumping into any non-league/masters games unless it is gunboat.

I prefer 4 games but can handle 6 as long as they are not all 24 hours or less. More than that is just too much time I can't afford.
fortknox (2059 D)

I don't like to have more than 5, but I tend to, so I prefer games that are no shorter than 36 hours.

Long turns means a lot of players can flip alliances back and forth BETWEEN A SINGLE TURN! It makes the dynamics of the game so ruthless. Really worth trying :)

my goal is to peel myself away from the site so that im content playing in 1 game. the only problem is that since im too eager to see the next season's move results, i play in far too many. that, coupled with the fact that the TMG series games come at you like a flood doesnt help.
Jacob (2466 D)

4 is usually my limit, but right now four is too many :(
2 to 4 games. I prefer games with long deadlines - 2 days is best. I tend avoid games of 24 hours or less because I don't get online very often.
texasdeluxe (516 D(B))

Well I guess it all depends on the phase-length, but I'm playing 4 at the moment (another set to start soon), and since I've been too busy at work to check on them (in my normal compulsive fashion) I'm finding it hard to keep up! Haven't even had time to read the forum!
spyman (424 D(G))

Three games is my maximum, usually with two to three day turns. I like the long games because you get a chance to diplome more.

Move entry bug
Sorry if this is the wrong place to report it but the SF bug tracker seems unused. If you have an option to move an army by land or convoy, and choose the destination but not the method, then change to support move, the via convoy/via land box remains. If you select one of them, there is an error, "What did you just update?" The problem is gone after clicking update.

Question about points in draw
I have a game where 2 remaining powers want to draw.

There is still also a third country which has a status "left". If we vote for the draw, will the points be split between the 2 players who are still in the game, or will the 3rd player (who already left) qualify as a survivor -- and get 1/3 of the points?
