sorry my statement is ridiculously long
1901
Diplomacy got off to a great start. Hit it off well with everyone, the only slightly reticent one was England, who subsequently started to talk more. However, England was quite aggressive and pushy in his press, which pre-disposed me against him. Germany was very non-committal, so wary of him. France and I had immediate bond, same with all the eastern powers, though Turkey also could have started off on a slightly nicer foot. I’d rather not bounce in BLA, but T insists on it, so have to. Things are going very well with both Italy and Austria-Hungary – GAL DMZ is good, and Italy wants to move on AH, while T seems open to an alliance though quite cautious I guess. Could be a great start. I decide for a strong opening to the north, hoping to keep peace with T and AH for now, and if Italy follows through on the attack, I’ll join later. Then I can decide who to support, Italy or Turkey. Germany suggests a northern opening, but I already had that planned, and I don’t seem to need to worry about him. He agrees to me having Sweden, vaguely, and England is also non-committal, so I feel I need to be able to take it by force if need be. I’m inclined to work with G and F against E – I’m a bit alienated by England’s press. F and G are committed to that, though I hear similar things from France that England’s press is pushy and that Germany is very vague – not a good sign at all.
England’s opening surprised me a bit, but seemed inconclusive. He continues to be pushy, and Germany is pressuring me hard to bounce him at NWY. I am concerned about an English army at NWY, a fleet is not as big a deal. After a lot of thought, and agreements from Germany not to bounce me at SWE, and from England not to convoy to NWY, I decide not to bounce, and tell them both my intentions. This is affected by rumors that AH might try for RUM, bouncing me – which would leave me with no SC!! Not a good possibility. Italy seems committed to keeping the fight against AH, and T is hesitant, clearly considering siding with the Hapsburgs. But I convince him he can get GRE, believing that AH (who I’ve kept good relations with) will also try for it. Don’t want T too strong now! AH says he has no designs on RUM, tho he had considered it. Italy lets me know he is agreed to Key Lepanto with AH, but will turn it into a stab. Ouch for AH!! Good for me, for now. France and maybe England seem to be on board against Germany, but not totally sure – F says he will let E have BEL, which seems fine to me. I hope that will encourage E not to break his word with me.
Alas all well laid plans can become SNAFU. Both G and E blatantly lied. G obviously has been a devious diplomat, and as I suspected, tried to get E fighting me and F, so that he (G) has the best options. This set of moves is a huge boon for G, minus my move to FIN, and I see now why he lobbied against it. I am pissed at both G and E, but ready to work with them – I think G is the bigger threat, and manipulating E, so I decide to try to make up with E, and work with him and F to take down G. Things in the east went perfect, just as expected. Though having T’s fleet at ANK still is not something I’m too fond of. After much deliberation, an army at WAR is my build.
Spring 1902
I came to a deal with England for support into SWE in exchange for us working together, despite his lying ways. I felt suspicious of his build at EDI, but he said he “didn’t want to anger the French” – fair enough. Of course, once I talk to France, I learn E had never even asked F about where he ought to build and if LON would be offensive or acceptable. Germany meanwhile is saying he’s going for SWE again, but suspects I can take with my superior forces. I also don’t like the fleet at KIE, but think I have got G to move against E. England not being contested in BEL means G continues to play him like a fiddle, but I’m hoping I can turn him around.
In the south I continue to work with Italy, and Turkey. Setting Turkey up for the least advancement, if possible. That doesn’t quite work out – I thought BUD was a walk for me and T would bounce at GRE. Alas, the opposite! Not a big deal though. Italy obviously needs a friend and an alliance with me makes way more sense than with T – commentators notwithstanding =P
At the last minute, I decide E is likely to go for STP after all, even though he has repeatedly promised not to (kinda like his promises not to convoy to NWY). So I change my orders. And despite planning an anti-german campaign with E, I decide to not send WAR into SIL or PRU – just keep it in place where it can be handy. With hindsight, I probably should have sent it to GAL instead. But at WAR it is more flexible if I need it in the north due to potential English treachery.
Autumn 1902
And treachery it is! Is England capable of telling the truth? I have to laugh at that, and G’s seizure of BEL. E seems to like the role of tool for German expansion. I finally take BUD. I’ve been telling T that we will move together on Italy – thinking maybe it’s a good option – but he is NMR. Oops! G’s move to TYR is clever and guarantees a role, but he has me, IT, FR and I imagine E all pissed off and not trusting him by now, so I think the German position will not last long. But he’s obviously extremely crafty, so I make a deal with him for now. I need SCs – so T it is, and I’m thinking I’ll build a fleet at SEV. I’ll reach out to E – but he needs to take a bit of a wupping at G and F’s hands before I will work with him. I continue to be on great terms with F and IT, and I just wish F would quite messing up his orders =(
1903
CD Turkey gets a new player, starts off with great press and even continues after we come to blows. Definitely considering taking up his offer for support into Serbia or Trieste. Meanwhile I have to figure out where that crafty Austrian is going next. I thought E would try for STP, and so I changed my orders at the last minute, but I wish I hadn’t – I could really use that army in STP now! On good terms with G still it seems, though his promise not to interfere with AH seems to be hollow.
Can’t believe it! I got G to support me into Vienna, and took Bulgaria as well. I knew I couldn’t guess AH’s move, so I went for the one that I thought would give me the best leverage to kill him, and leave an SC open in case I got a build, which I did! I am sure I’ll see AH move to Sevastopol with T’s help, but that’s ok, it’s just a matter of time before AH is gone. With my alliance with Italy still solid, we will move against Germany. I had planned to help Germany and keep options open, but a messed up move in the north left G furious at me, so I have to move against him now. I do hope E will finally do something useful, and I’m so glad F finally got his build for Portugal.
1904
Somehow I overlooked Turkey being able to take Bulgaria, but no matter I can take it back. I’ve got AH apparently working with me now, we’ll see how that works out. G is acting belligerent as usual, but I’ve got a commitment from E to support me into Sweden, which is great. Autumn brings trauma with Italy definitely not going with the plan, though it doesn’t totally look like a stab (why not take Budapest if he’s stabbing me). AH and E both do as promised, which is great to see. And G loses Sweden to me, which I’m quite happy about. But the loss of Bulgaria means I don’t get a build, which I need badly, and delays Turkey’s demise by at least another turn. I haven’t heard much from F, but looks like he is now allied with G, who is desperately trying to get me to change course and help him. Not so pushy any more! Turkey does a great job making the case for why I should work with him, but I just don’t see it working out. If Italy hits me again next year, then it’s a different story, but for now I’ve got to accept Italy’s story that he messed up his orders b/c he was reading my press on his iPhone and couldn’t see it properly.
1905/06
My trust in Italy proved to not be misplaced. I decided to eliminate AH, b/c a wild card is not very helpful at this point, and to press on against T. I thought E would be sure to stick with Italy and myself, but that did not work out. Still, retreat phase allowed me to take make up for the loss of NWY. In the end I don’t think that will work well for E. I’m kind of glad, because I find him very difficult to work with and I’d rather not include him in the draw if possible. Admittedly, Italy’s build of a second army has me on edge – he needs more fleets to break out into the Atlantic and not get stalemated at Gibraltar. Still, Italy’s relative inexperience, and unfaltering loyalty so far, have me keen to stick with him. From here I can safely work with G and T this turn and move on Italy, with notice, and then see where the chips fall – if it’s advantageous to press the “fake stab” I will, if not, I’ll go back to beating up T and G. Considering what a bad position I’ve been in most of the game, especially after the beginning, I think I’m doing alright. At the last minute I have decided to not move against Italy after all, despite what all the commentators say.
1907
What a terrible year. We start off with Italy going NMR, and I make some key mistakes tactically. I took the safe route and support GoB-Stp, but wish I had sent Fin in, b/c then I’d keep that fleet in play. I thought G would tap me at GoB to cut support for sure. Lots of mistrust in the Western Alliance it seems. The only good outcome of it all was Italy getting out into the Atlantic with that fleet. In Autumn, some luck, as I took Berlin, but again missed opportunities – Italy should have picked up an SC from me, since I can’t take advantage of the builds. Add to that Italy’s mess-up in Ion, and we’re in trouble down south. I’m working E and F tirelessly, trying to peel them off, but little progress. I know F doesn’t like working with E or G, so trying to use that as leverage. I can maybe go for a solo, if there’s a way to make it happen. The board is in total chaos right now, so it may be the time to try for it. An army at Sev is about useless, so I build a fleet, and that could be leveraged for Italy’s sake, or my own.
1908
I thought we had France on our side, but at the last minute he changed his mind, afraid I might go for the solo. It’s just not possible. The game is getting a bit stagnant, and Germany is calling for a draw. I think Italy and could break through if we got lucky, but I’m getting tired of the game actually and I want to be playing in fewer games anyway, so I am inclined to go along with it. We’ll see how Autumn plays out, but I do think if France came over we could get to a neat 3-way quite quickly. Too bad he’s not willing to do so.
In the end, it looked intractable and I got tired of playing the game, so I agreed to a draw. It was a fun game, I have too many others right now, so bringing it to an end is excellent.
