Java from phpdiplomacy?
In the past few days, I've noticed that whenever I go to any phpdiplomacy page, java starts to spring out of control on my machine. Does anyone have an idea of what is going on?

How to unpause if a player is AWOL?
In Kosciusko, two players have not unpaused. Neither were the player who requested a pause.
Both have (or had, last time I looked) one or more other games in which they were in Civil Disorder or had not made moves, so I'm assuming they may not be back.
1. How long should the game be left like this, given that neither of the players involved asked for an extended pause?
2. At what point can the game be forced to continue if a player never enters an unpause?

Hi all.
I am new to this site but not new to the game. I had to move recently (economy), so I lost my crew and was hoping to get a game (and a new crew). I was going to take over for one of the civil disorder countries in the current games, but they are all in really bad shape and I'm not quite sure how this point system works yet, so I figured I would try this method. Anyway, I guess I've rambled on long enough.

Rules Question: Kiel Canal
Is it possible to convoy an army from England past Denmark and through to the Baltic in one turn? What kind of a fleet setup would be required to make this work?
akssoon (100 D)
06 Apr 09 UTC
No, because you would need to order a fleet in Denmark to "do" a convoy and that isn't possible.
Talos Rey (0 DX)
06 Apr 09 UTC
It is not possible because, despite the fact that Denmark is not actually connected to Sweden, it is in Diplomacy and therefore the section of water between Skagerack and the Baltic Sea is considered to be part of Denmark (a land tile).
figlesquidge (2131 D)
06 Apr 09 UTC
You can't convoy across land.
Duffster (345 D)
06 Apr 09 UTC
So it would also be impossible to convoy armies into and out of the Black Sea?

This seems rather silly to me — seems to me that if you have a fleet in Constantinople or Kiel that they should be able to convoy since these two zones have water passing completely through them.

I'm not saying any of the above posts are wrong — just that I think the rules should be changed.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
06 Apr 09 UTC
You can convoy through Black Sea yes, but fleets can only convoy when at sea
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
06 Apr 09 UTC
You cannot convoy through Kiel or Constantinople.
Duffster (345 D)
06 Apr 09 UTC
Doesn't it seem like these two should be exception? I mean, if a fleet can travel through a space entirely by water doesn't it make logical sense that it should be able to convoy an army across that space?

I understand that we can't have a fleet in Norway convoying an army from Sweden to St Pete, but it seems to me that a convoy through Kiel and Constantinople make sense from both a logical perspective and a game perspective.

I agree with you, but the game is how the game is, and its worked out pretty well so far, although I admit it is annoying at times, especially for those of us who dream of a 23 fleet convoy, or whatever the number is I can't think of it off the top of my head.
vamosrammstein (757 D(B))

20 fleet convoy, come on guys, don't try and tell me youve never imagined doing a 20 fleet convoy:]
P.Ginsberg (125 D)

If you could convoy through Constantinople and Denmark, the defense of their respective countries would be greatly reduced.

And at least they're not like St. Pete, where you can't move from one coast to the other.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
07 Apr 09 UTC
Not really no. I've seen London-NA used tactically at least one, but Naples-Brest seems more trouble than it's worth.
Anyway, come on - let this one die!

what happened to the keil canal on? i have seen it on every actual board i have played on. i thought you can convoy from the Heligoland Bight to baltic sea because of that canal.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
07 Apr 09 UTC
Do you mean why is it not shown? The map used has been simplified, making it easier to show the locations and borders of territories on a small screen. However it still exists, and you can move a fleet through it. However no, you can't convoy across any territory an army could move in its own right
Duffster (345 D)
07 Apr 09 UTC
Apparently, saffordpc, the only purpose that the Kiel Canal serves in Diplomacy is that it allows a fleet to enter/exit from either side (no east/west coast nonsense).

I do not see how allowing convoys through Constantinople, Denmark, or Kiel would hurt the defenses of any country in particular. It seems like it would open up possibilities that make the game more interesting, though.

For instance, I'm currently France in a game where I allied with England. I've occupied most of Germany and Italy. England has occupied much of Russia and is starting to press southward, so he needs armies in Russia…

He can do a two-fleet convoy from Edinburgh to St Pete or he can do a three-fleet convoy London to St Pete. However, it is not possible for him to do a four-fleet transfer into Prussia or Livonia, even though in reality these are both much shorter and safer nautical journeys!

If players were allowed these logical convoys I can't think of a single way the game would suffer and I can think of many ways it would benefit.

And let's not forget that this would also add an interesting element to the game: for the three land/water zones (Kiel, Den, Con) it would be possible for an army to break a convoy.

Who do we need to contact to get this rule changed already?!?

Haha, good luck trying to sway the entire Diplomacy community! Also on the forum at the moment are threads about two of the main diplomacy zine's - try writing a letter to one of them. I would expect your suggestion has been tried anyway
Duffster, if we changed the rules every time an excited newcomer suggested a rule change... well... we'd have a lot of rule changes.
And this online game reflects the rules as presented in the board game which has been around for decades...

I suppose the physical reason for the inability to convoy through these areas is that the straights are rather narrow and can't be navigated easily, especially with a load of screaming GIs on board. Therefore it requires more than one operation but that would mean both the fleet and army would have to rest in port.
saffordpc (163 D)

well both pieces would not be allowed in a center in the case of the kiel canal in fact neither would be in a center. i always thought the since kiel canal connected Heligoland Bight and baltic sea that it could be convoyed i have played a live game with some of my friends we we did allow convoys through it save me a couple times when playing as Germany convoying from Prussia to Holland can be quite nice
Duffster (345 D)
07 Apr 09 UTC
Yeah, I guess these will have to remain my house rules. Too bad the reason I play Diplomacy online is because I can't get enough people interested at my house! :-P

I realize that it's hard to change rules, but it sure seems like this is one that would benefit the game. It's pretty easy for Russia to hold England at bay in the north with just one or two units. Wouldn't it be a lot more interesting if England had a chance (albeit a resource-intensive one) to launch a convoyed attack on Prussia or Livonia and strike fear into the Russian heartland?

The Silent Treatment
Hey, is it common to get the silent treatment from other players during a game? As in, no response to communications sent? Also, is it possible to anonymize the players in a game so that alliances are set up based on the game and not on who you know is playing?

Just a few questions from a new person.
