Order history text function - THANK YOU KESTAS
I just noticed the new order history as text, and I just wanted to say that. It's very useful to know about support orders for moves that didn't happen, etc. So thank j00 :D

New Game: Then Pen is Mightier than the Sword
-er, perhaps. If the Sword is very short, and the Pen very sharp. Anyways, new game open, 10 points, for you to prove which one is in fact, mightier.

Dislodgement question
This is a hypothetical situation.

Suppose England has armies in Denmark, Holland, and Kiel.
Suppose also that Russia has armies in Munich and Berlin.
Additionally, suppose that there is an Italian army in Ruhr.

The following orders are submitted:

(Italy)
A Ruhr stands.

(England)
A Denmark supports A Holland-Kiel.
A Holland-Kiel.
A Kiel-Ruhr.

(Russia)
A Berlin supports A Munich-Kiel.
A Munich-Kiel.

If none of the supporting moves are cut, is the army in Kiel dislodged?

Led Julio and Aero - an update
I know I might be insisting a bit too much on this, but it's getting more and more annoying... not only Aero is allied with Led Julio in all his three games (the fourth being a country he just took from CD). In the game I am in, he has had a mathematic victory in his hands for two years now, but will not take it. And Led Julio trusts him so completely that he is not defending his SCs, even though by taking them Aero could win.
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4327
(the other games you can easily find from Aero's profile)
Shouldn't there be a way to prevent this way of playing?

New Player's Questions
I played by mail years ago and just saw this site so thought I'd like to try. I am just a little confused about the following:
1 How are orders submitted? Where on the game does one find the GM listed or is it some other way?
2.I communicate with countries using their country tabs?
3.I see games with supply center counts and maps. Where would I find the specific centers owned by each country and how do I tell who owns which armies or fleets on a map?
These may be rudamentary to those of you who have been doing this a while, as things were when I played by mail, but I can't figure them out and would much appreciate it if someone would be so kind as to act as menton. I might even resist the tempatation to do something bad to you some day. Or I might not.
Thank you in advance.

"Man to man is so unjust, children
You don't know who to trust
Your worst enemy could be your best friend
And your best friend your worst enemy

Some will eat and drink with you
Then behind them su-su 'pon you
Only your friend know your secrets

Rules question - mutual hold support.
If I have 2 adjacent armies and they both support each other (hold), does that work? That was the way we always played the board game, but I note that the green hold line on the maps always has a bar near one end of it.
Does this mean that the support hold in <area> command only actually works if the army in <area> holds?
Or do 2 adjacent armies each supporting each other holding both have a strength of 2 , as long as the support isn't cut by another attack?

The formatting on this site is completely messed up.

Is it just me (my computer)? Or is it a problem from the server side?

Changes in the icons
I'm not very happy that the icons of new messages & un-finalized moves changed to the text (new message, finalized etc.) - first of all, the game-tabs are now much wider, secondly, it is really hard to catch the situation with a quick look (it took me few moments before I figured out, which of the powers had sent me a message and it is very hard to differentiate the messages Finalized/ Not Finalized, if You take a look to the games section). So, if at all possible, I would gladly skip this upgrade & I would be happy if we would get the 'old good' icons back - at least in my opinion they were much better. Thanks.

New code from Facebook -> 0.81
We've completed the code merge with Facebook phpDip since they updated to 0.8, so now everyone gets the best features from both, I have less work to do when bugs happen, and more than twice the number of people enjoy the same code

We got a couple of nice features out of it too which Chris added to his ex-fork;
- Pagination for games listings, so you're not restricted to a limited number of games on the page
- Flexible phase lengths, so you can choose to play with 1 phase every hour, or 1 phase every 3 days. (This has been called for for a long time, not my favorite idea in the past but it seems every phpDip fork adds it so there must be something in it. Hell has froze over, I've eaten my hat, etc)

Kudos to Chris at Facebook

I tried Facebook diplomacy before I joined this site, and the problem wasn't bugs, but the number of people going into CD.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
22 Jul 08 UTC
I'm helping them kick-start their points system to try and sort that problem out, and Chris added a notification feature to let people know what's going on in their games. But I think because their site is easier to join and find it'll always get more curious newcomers than this place (but it'll be interesting to see how much it improves)

Can I just clarify how the PHP<-> Facebook integration works? Is it seamless and I can now play games with people on Facebook via this site? Or is it a seperate site, seperate player lists/points that uses a common code base?
Chrispminis (916 D)
23 Jul 08 UTC
It's the latter. Any seamlessness is purely as a result of their close collaboration.

I returned to play PHP Diplomacy after one year, and noticed many more players around, activity in the forum, etc.

I am curious to know: how strong positive impact did the Facebook application had on the overall PHPDiplomacy success?

BTW, GREAT WORK and thanks for hosting our games!!!

>>I'll probably be making all my new games at 25 hours at least. =)

Does that mean you'll occasionally finalize without letting the turn run out? :)
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
23 Jul 08 UTC
Braveheart as Chrispminis said we're on the same codebase, but a separate database.
Though now if we wanted to merge communities we could, but I don't think either of us are sure whether a single one twice the size would be a good thing, and there's the issue of suddenly doubling hosting load

fr1988: I'm not sure, for any way FB phpDip might have helped bring people you can think of another way it could have taken them. Around a year ago we were losing activity steadily for months, but it was actually the points system that first turned that around, and since then every month has been the most active so far :-)

So since FB Dip only came out around Feb I don't think it had a big effect here in particular. (But for me it's great to see the open source license being used for what it was supposed to be)
Chrispminis (916 D)
23 Jul 08 UTC
FB Dip might not be bringing traffic here, but at least it's introducing the game of Diplomacy to many new players. It's such a good game, it really deserves more recognition than it gets. I hope that in the future, Diplomacy will become far more popular, and I can definitely see the facebook application playing in an important role towards that end.

As more people join up, face to face games will be much easier to organize, especially with Facebook networking. I haven't joined the FB Dip community myself, but I'm definitely excited for it.

actually i have a question. i havent played any games here in some time and for anyone who knows, should i start up again on Facebook or stay here? which is better? would i have more fun since i know everyone here or what
fr1988 (100 D)
24 Jul 08 UTC
Thanks for the info! Yes, I do believe that Diplomacy (and especially this Diplomacy platform) deserves more and more fame!

I found this site one year ago, while googling about Diplomacy before enrolling at Diplomatic Academy. And I think this is one of the few games which is worth to play! It requires to play the people more than the board itself, it takes 5 minutes to get the main rules, but a life to master them (at least for me :-).

At the top of this, PHPDiplomacy shows the power of Open Source, so even better...
thewonderllama (100 D)
24 Jul 08 UTC
Thucydides, as kestas just said, the FB phpDip now is identical to here. Frankly, before the merge I would have said here was better, if nothing else but for the community. But now, the only difference *is* the community, so I'd stay here. :)
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
24 Jul 08 UTC
The main difference is the community, more people come and go there, plus there the points system was only just started off so the rankings aren't so well established.

There are also small differences, like JavaScript not yet being ported to Facebook, which means the chatbox doesn't scroll to the bottom, and you can't scroll back through old maps (but hopefully these'll be fixed in time)

If I were a Facebook nut I'd play over there
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
25 Jul 08 UTC
Btw - have noticed chat boxes down scroll to the bottom here either when using my Mac at home. XP seems fine.
Darwyn (1601 D)
25 Jul 08 UTC
Firstly...Diplomatic Academy? There is such a thing? Hmmm...there is! http://www.da-vienna.ac.at/application/startseite.asp Awesome! If I were younger, that would be a consideration. :)

And second, I have no need or desire to have a Facebook account and therefore have no reason to leave the best online diplomacy site!

The experienced community here is better...because it's experienced.

However, I'm excited by the prospect, as Chris mentioned, of FB facilitating more FTF games.
Chrispminis (916 D)
25 Jul 08 UTC
It would definitely be helpful if some of the more experienced players here helped the budding facebook community grow and mature by joining up themselves. I will think about joining myself when the summer is over.
