Question about dislodgement and support
Hi guys!

I've been playing Diplomacy for one year but now I'm re-reading the rulebook and I've bumped into one question.

Magic Money Trees
The UK's totally bankrupt Prime Minister, Theresa May, told nurses they couldn't have a pay rise because "there isn't a magic money tree".

But this week there was £1.5 billion of magic money to give to some extreme-right Northern Irish homophobes with strong connections to terrorism.

Unhelpful Allies
Quick question, does anyone get annoyed by allies who send you messages saying really obvious things about what other countries did last turn or where you could easily get a SC. Basically all the information that is super clear that everyone could figure out but they decide to tell you anyways. Am I the only one who feels this way?

Home Game
Is there a way to run a game from one computer? In a face to face game, players would submit their orders to the moderator who logs them into the program for resolution, afterwards updating the public board. Does anyone know how to make this work?

Safe space for right wing Conservatives
This is a thread for conservatives to talk away from the judging eyes of liberal progressives.
Please come in and share your feelings. This thread is going to be our home.

Flum, I welcome you to the conservative movement. However, how do we make sure this is our safe space? Like I already feel unsafe and I know that we are going to get brigaded by the leftys. I am scared.

Maybe we should have a different thread made for leftys too so everyone has a home and no one needs to encroach.

lol you should make a "safe space for ents" thread. Then we'll get the entire forum locked down for spam.

fwiw, this current spate of spam threads is enlightening, in that it recognizes how fractured and incapable of discussion our overall cultural narrative tends to be. Are the real live people on this forum really so polarized and incapable of speaking to one another? ("our" here probably means Americans, as I'm probably not qualified to speak to "safe spaces" in other cultures)

The whole of the public square used to be a "safe space" in one sense, because the unwritten rules of civil society (coming from a christian culture, at least nominally) recommended that everyone be afforded dignity according to their common humanity. I'm not saying that these rules were equally or fairly applied to everyone, but that was the societal understanding. The United States Bill of Rights included a protection of the natural right to free speech and the right to assembly as a formal safeguard of the same.

That worldview has undergone weaponized deconstruction by the present elite, as they found the moral code of that society repugnant and/or inexpedient. With that deconstruction also went the unwritten rules of civil society, and a general dismissal of the 1st amendment.

If I understand the word correctly, a "safe spaces" in today's sense isn't quite the same as the civil decency and free speech of yesteryear. There's a difference between saying "I shouldn't be called names or physically assaulted for holding X opinion" and saying "I shouldn't have to hear anyone dissenting to the whims or opinions that my favorite sophists have told me I like."

So thank you for the safe space. I don't want to cease hearing from people who disagree with me. If I did, I'd simply mute most of you, or go to a different site where I could find the ideology more palatable to my own personal temper tantrums. I come here because ... well, because of dip and mafia, but also because it's a public forum. In the public square you have to engage with people who hold different opinions.

When I said before that we ought to encourage good manners and civility, it means that we can and ought to hear one another out, and stop letting our own poor manners get in the way of greater understanding. If such a thing is still possible, I'm interested to hear your ideas. What constitutes civil discourse?

It's hard because the one side genuinely views the other side to be full of bad people.

Republicans view the Democrats as lazy, selfish, jobless, entitled, whiny, hypocritical, unaware, privileged people who are genuinely mean spirited most often.
Democrats view the Republicans as sexist, racist, homophobic, xenophobic, greedy, closed-minded, arrogant and genuinely evil people most often.
I think both views are usually misguided.

I wouldn't even limit it to saying you need to listen to all viewpoints. You actually need people with multiple viewpoints to have a functioning society. It's the current Yin and Yang. I think the if you had a society with only conservatives it would result in a impersonal, hostile, every human for themselves type of society. If you had a society of only liberals, it just wouldn't work (for reasons I'm sure people in this thread already understand.)
Both views work in theory ("conservative" and "liberal") but both views suffer from the corruption of humans latching onto the respective vices that can be easily exploited in each view. You need people with the different ideologies active to hold back the vices of the opposing view so the positives of each view can be the dominant force. It's kind of like how you need competition between business to keep products desirable.

I mean, everyone rips into America and other "western" countries for being terrible and ugly, but let's be real. We're currently living in some of the best places to live in the history of the civilization. Something worked. And both sides have reasons to thank the other. I think passionate rivalry is necessary for society.

We just need to figure out how to fix the passion that turned into intense bitterness and anger, because that leads to unnecessary violence which all sides seem to agree is bad.

Also, I'm talking out of my ass kinda, but it was fun to just type something out.

Political persecution at its finest.
bo_sox48 (5202 D Mod (G))
25 Jun 17 UTC
You know political persecution in some places regularly gets people jailed or executed because they disagree with a nation's leader, or results in genocide, or ends up turning into civil wars that cause massive numbers of civilian casualties and displacements, right? This doesn't quite fits that mold, let alone constitutes "persecution at its finest."

Convoy question
If an army is being convoyed into territory A by a fleet in sea B and is supported into A by another unit, what happens if a fleet in Territory A is supported into Sea B?

Do they bounce because of equal force, or does the fleet from A dislodge the fleet in B before the convoy is successful?
