Rule Hypocrisy
the people that made a rule against "Sexism, racism, homophobia, and other forms of bigotry" but allow cussing i think is quite hypocritical. if you allow people to cuss on this site then why is it wrong for someone to politely state their belief that homosexuality is a sin? if this forum was made for people to voice their opinions and opinions are allowed on other matters then why is it wrong to voice your opinions on sticky subjects?

Petition to rename St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg as a territory name is offensive to anyone who isn't Christian. We need to change this to be more welcoming to other religions.

Switzerland: No Man's Land.
Let's assume that Switzerland is no longer impassable. What effects would that have on the game, the strategy, and the tactics? Should Switzerland stay a no man's land, or might it be more interesting to make it a playable space? Perhaps it could be a neutral supply center, or just a neutral territory. What do you guys think?

Turkey Opening Strategies: Moving to Syria?
Turkey opens normally, except the fleet in Ankara moves to Constantinople, and the army in Smyrna holds. The army in Smyrna then moves to Syria. Turkey can build a fleet in Ankara or Smyrna, depending on whether he is going after Russia or Italy. This is not my idea. I was just curious to know what you guys think about it. Is a Turkish move to Syria just plain silly, or might it have some serious strategic effects?

French - Italian alliance
How would this work? Usually there's a non-aggression pact, but if France were willing to sacrifice Marseilles in return for support in Tyrolia, is this a workable relationship? Stabs are VERY difficult as they cross the stalemate line, but has this been effectively done before?

A Conservative Answer to Climate Change
I don't imagine a revenue neutral carbon tax proposed by top republicans from the Reagan era will be at all controversial...

I hate people from Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe-ans suck big time.

I was actually going to use this new thread to maybe comment about what I think about women, or maybe what I think about Republicans, or maybe something else like that. But then I thought those things might get me in trouble. So I decided to express my opinion about Zimbabwe-ans instead.

Strategy differences between the maps
What would you say the biggest overall strategy differences are between playing the small map (Ancient Med) vs Classic vs the larger maps (Fall of American Empire, Mod Dip, World Dip, and soon to be extinct Known World)?

Alleged 9/11 Mastermind Explains Motives
Shockingly, in 18 pages the supposed imperative to spread Sharia Law and force Americans to convert to Islam does not get a mention. American foreign policy, however, gets plenty of ink.

Newbie question
If a piece "supports hold" another unit does it loose its own "hold"?

Welcome to WebDiplomacy Egathetos. I hope you enjoy it here. Avoid, like the plague, threads that intermittently pop up here advertising fake IDs, paintings and other merchandise. They usually get shut down quickly. Read the rules about the site thoroughly. Use the forum as you have to seek advice. Be very careful in the forum about discussing ongoing games. And have fun.

Thank you Mitchell. I have to say that I am catching the bug.

Is it allowed or not, to discuss games in the forum? I assume that it is not.

If confused by who to listen to, look for posts by accounts with the checkerboard pattern next to them. That indicates the person is a Moderator and is a more reliable source than most - so Valis here, for example. As Lethologica and Valid said, a unit support holding another unit both supports another unit and acts as a hold for itself.
Lethologica (203 D)

Discussing games in the forum is only allowed for full press games. For those games, it may or may not be a violation of etiquette. In general, I would avoid posting about full press games in the forum while they're happening unless you (a) need another player or (b) have agreed with the other players that posting on the forum is okay for that particular game.

"5. Do not attempt to circumvent press restrictions

Because press in gunboat games, rulebook press games, and public press games is restricted, discussing them on the forum while they are being played can jeopardise the fairness of the game and, if done by a player in the game, can classify as working around press restrictions. Even in an effort to draw or cancel a game, posting about an ongoing gunboat game is prohibited. If a player is stalemated and refuses to draw or refuses to unpause a paused game, please email the moderators at [email protected]."

Lol - Valis, not Valid. Although an interesting slip to be sure.

You cannot discuss active games in the forum if you are in that game and Press (communication) is limited in that game. Generally, it's bad form to discuss a game you are playing in outside of the Global interface within the game, but technically allowed if you could send press anyway. Of course you can use the forum to recruit players for game, say to replace someone who drops out. See the rules for full details: http://webdiplomacy.net/rules.php

"As Lethologica and Valid said, a unit support holding another unit both supports another unit and acts as a hold for itself. "

- well, theoretically not, a unit can't hold and support hold at the same time (since when it is attacked it will 'cut' the support hold and only hold) so if we want to be totally correct (and nit-picking) we need to say:

a) a unit can only follow one order
b) the order of a unit can be a support hold of another unit
c) if the unit who gives a support hold is attacked (even when it is only one unit attacking and this unit, that is attacked, get more than one support hold), it cannot support hold another unit and defends itself, ergo defaults to just holding itself (selfish little unit). So it drops the order you gave it and follows its own order of 'holding'.

Isn't it so?
Lethologica (203 D)
10 Feb 17 UTC
All the behavior in (c) is part of the meaning of a 'support hold' order. The semantic concession to a unit's inability to actually execute two orders at once is where slypups says, "*acts as* a hold for itself."

How to play Russia in Gunboat
Title. I suck at Russia in gunboat. I have no clue what high level strategy I should be going for. I just always die after accomplishing virtually nothing.
