Situation on the board
Couldn't find an answer anywhere...
How do I plot the situation? Is it done automatically or do I need a mapper app or something like that?

Is Russia that bad of a country?
So they're in Syria. So they took Crimea. So they attacked Georgia.
Is that bad enough to start a new cold war over?

How to stop being garbage?
I've basically noticed that whether or not I get 2v1'd in 1901 or '02 basically comes down to a crapshoot. I find it's very difficult to get conversations and discussion rolling, especially in lower-bet games. Anyone got tips?

Funny business or just my usual paranoia?
I've noticed a trend in gunboat games....when entering orders -- especially during '01 -- a given great power will click SAVE instead of READY. More often than not, an adjacent great power will do the same. Amazingly, these powers don't move on each other. While it may be frowned upon, is this a way of signalling a wish for non-aggression/cooperation? ...and if it's not...why do it?

...and yes the walls talk to me...sometimes in harsh tones.

I'm assuming Zultar was talking about me above. Let me respond: how do you ask for opinions on a 100+ comment thread and then bitch someone out for not reading the whole damn thread? If yo wanted the conversation seperate then you should've made a seperate thread. Don't ask for opinions of you aren't ready to hear them.

In looking at that you can easily see key bits of dip theory like stalemate lines (barring that weird one with only England, Turkey and Portugal) and the "Hold Munich and win" strat.

Besides that. Love you Zultar.

I like the idea of making Chaos only periodically available. While I think it is a fun variant and I signed the Chaos petition I do fully understand the downside to including it.

1 on 1 seems like a great fit. I don't know if I'd play it too often myself but it seems like something that would get a lot of support. I like something like Known World or whatever to replace World (sorry, fans of that one, but it is not well balanced - who designed the central Asian region???). Maybe another mid size one if you are replacing Ancient Med.

Although Colonial Diplomacy or the Machiavelli variant would be cool too.
Ikaneko (113 D)
17 Oct 16 UTC
Colonial all the way!

1. Adding FvA, GvI and Duo would be great 1v1 additions to the site, as stated earlier FvA & BvI would provided quick easy to start games and be good for newbies getting to know the game. Duo would provide a symmetrical map that ticks these boxes as well

2. Know World 901 - Fantastic! I love this map

3. Instead of adding Chaos, can we please consider the following instead:
Dark Ages
Heptarchy
Colonial
Greek Diplomacy
Fog of War
orathaic (1009 D(B))
18 Oct 16 UTC
Can i just second Fog of War.

I think Chaos should be a rare site-wide event. Like once or twice a year, we could have a big christmas game... Or similar. Not necessarily available at all times (with lots of games being created that no-one can fill up..)
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
18 Oct 16 UTC
Just saying look like Fog of war and colonial have literally the most support so far.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))

The main problem with adding Chaos is that it would be an absolute nightmare to mod. You can already see this in World games; but you're almost certain to get a few metagamers (or multis) in any public game of Chaos. But what do we do about it? We cancel games with 2+ cheaters of Classic (or any variant other than World right now) to stop them being affected by cheating; but when it comes to World they're hard enough to get off the ground so we have to make a call on a case by case basis. Chaos has everyone way closer together too;, so it's feasible that metagaming will start impacting the game right from the beginning. But if we cancel a game of Chaos because of 2-3 people you have about 30 annoyed players. Or more likely, about 20 annoyed players, and another few bunches of metagamers ready to ruin the next one.

Chaos is too big to really keep cheater-free, so I'm against adding it because it would lower the overall quality of the site when it comes to cheating.

I believe that what was said before about FoW is that the code is very messy, and so we haven't brought it over.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

@HR only allow mod approved player to play in site-sanctioned Chaos games, specially arranged ~once per year.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
18 Oct 16 UTC
(+1)
@HR, I disagree on that. World isn't too bad in the sense that because it takes so much longer to start due to organization of 17 people, the mods have more time to check out the games before they start. And to be perfectly honest about it, if it draws out more cheaters then good, that isn't something you should be worried about but something that should be a good opportunity to further reduce cheating.

@FOG supporters. The code is a nightmare and would be miles harder to bring over then any other variant at vdip.

@ora ... if there's only gonna be one game a year, let's just do it on vDip. That's an awful lot of trouble for very little reward.

Any news on this?
JEccles (421 D)
25 Oct 16 UTC
To second Chaqa's question, and also ask a more specific one, what time frame are we looking at that we could introduce a 1v1 variant to the site? I would love to use this to teach one of my friends how to play the game before jumping into a full classic.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
25 Oct 16 UTC
So 1) the vs games are available at vdip; if you want to introduce someone you can easily arrange games there.

2) the variants support for webdip/vdip is pretty comprehensive, so it is almost as easy as copy and paste one directory (from vdip) and edit one file to enable a variant over here.

Therefore i conclude the decision hasn't been made yet.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
25 Oct 16 UTC
Also this variant on vdip allows you play any 1vs1 or other combination of classic map games.

You could use it to play france bs england opening moves to get some practice and then cancel, or lots of other interesting things...
JEccles (421 D)
25 Oct 16 UTC
Thanks orathaic. I understand it's on vdip, but I like to have one site I visit for everything, and not create accounts in multiple places. If it's a simple variant to bring over, I don't know what the problem would be to just add it here. I understand that the argument is made that we want to focus on making this site the place to come for classic or whatever, but I also think adding more variants and letting the players determine what works and doesn't work would be beneficial as well. If it was a "one stop shop" so to speak on this site for variants, then we could become the best community for all things diplomacy, and see the site take off even more than just focusing on one specific variant or gameplay.

That's just my opinion though, and I haven't thought about it as much as others have I would imagine.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

I'd largely agree with you.

bringing it over is very easy, unless things have changed. (i copied the idea of France vs austria and made several of the other 1vs1 variants on vdip, so i know how to install a variant at least) And of all the variants, these ones A) still use the same maps - big and small images. B) Have no special rules to worry about. And C) add to the learning experience of playing classic.

I would highly recommend them. (even if there are some arguements against other non-classic variants)

"2) the variants support for webdip/vdip is pretty comprehensive, so it is almost as easy as copy and paste one directory (from vdip) and edit one file to enable a variant over here. "

Not quite. There's database steps involved.

I guess I in part contributed to this by creating that Chaos thread, but this has gone the way of most variant discussion threads where everyone starts proposing different variants to port instead of agreeing/disagreeing with the ones initially proposed. That usually stops the site owners wanting to port variants across, because they know they can't please everyone.

The question was: Should we bring in some 1v1 variants and replace WIX with KW901?

I think, putting aside all the 'bring in these variants too!' comments, the community response to that question has been a resounding yes.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

Well zultar already said he was bringing 1v1 and 901 over, so we started talking about other stuff.

Communication Block and Mute Player Inquiry.
Hey I am wondering if muting a player in a game can carry over into actual private messages and forum post messages? I received a private message for actual in game conversations where I am not even a player in the game.

Can people be muted/have blocked communications out of actual diplomacy games? Does anyone know if this is possible?

ACA Premium Reimbursement
Today I was refunded a decent amount of last year's insurance premium through my company because our insurer didn't spend enough of their income from premiums on claims. What is going on here that some people are seeing their premiums double while some insurers literally don't have enough claims. Is it just happenstance that this provider only has healthy people? A civil, informed discussion would be appreciated, if at all possible.
