Captain Hydra
To kick off our long anticipated Marvel thread, Steve Rogers is a member of Hydra now, and it may not be as horrible as people think.

posting title spoilers is kind of a kick in the dick...

Also I don't mind it. I think it's more interesting than "indestructible and incorruptible guy might not come out OK ... THIS time!"

So people are freaking out about Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 ending with Rogers possibly killing Jack Flag and saying "Hail Hydra." But let's look at the rest of the comic. "Anyone can be a hero" permeates at the start and end. For Steve, one such hero was a Depression-era member of the New York branch of Hydra. Jack Flag was also a hero when Steve was fighting Baron Zemo and about to lose. Before pushing Jack out of the ship, he apologizes. Steve fought Zemo at the end, and is highly upset by Red Skull convincing a young man to die for the message of Hydra. And before engaging Zemo, the Baron is talking about how he wants to fight the Red Skull for the soul of Hydra, to which Rogers responds by saying "Let me save you the trouble." Perhaps the old Cap sees a divided Hydra, an organization which took him in and protected him in his desperation, and wants to take advantage by fighting for its soul against the likes of Red Skull and Baron Zemo. He disposed of Jack Flag because this isn't something for Jack to be a part of, possibly protecting him. Steve Rogers wasn't raised with German Nazism, and he wants to bring Hydra away from that ideology. Thoughts?

I read the title, and nothing else and I only have this to say: You suck TrPrado. Go spoil things somewhere else.

It's like half the reason people are reading the comic.

If it weren't spoiled for me I would never have read a Captain America comic.

He was interrupted mid-sentence. What he was TRYING to say was "Hail Hydroponics."

That's right: Captain America's been a secret pothead for 75 years. All the signs are there! Falling asleep for long periods of time, always getting into fights with his drunk friend, carrying a Frisbee around 24-7, always being amazed at things like cell phones and polio vaccine.
TrPrado (461 D)

Being a member of Hydra is the most interesting thing about Captain America by far. If this is only temporary I'll lose a lot of respect for Marvel. I want to see Steve Rogers become the leader of Hydra and stay in that position and adopt a new title, giving Sam Wilson the only Captain America title.

If you look up "Captain America" you'll see a ton of articles that spoil it right off. This is the only thing in the comic people are talking about. If you look for it at all, you'll find everyone around saying "OH MY GOD HE'S IN HYDRA THIS RUINS EVERYTHING!!!!!"

Just saying everyone who is mad about a character getting a new character arc needs to stfu. Who knows what is happening here, we could see Steve play double agent and destroy Hydra from within. We could see Steve become a major villain in the Marvel Universe leaving Sam Wilson to take up the mantle permanently, or we could see some other very creative and respectable plot twist. We are at a point where new heroes are rinsing and repeating old powers and stories; maybe taking a hero like Captain America turning him into a villain and giving way for a similar yet new charcter to take his place could be revitalizing to the comic industry. It could also be a clear message that just because a person claims to represent something in this case "America" doesn't mean that they do. We could see a new hero challenge Cap for his title under the message that "Just because something was supported for decades doesn;t mean it should be supported today" very deep and the type of political message Marvel has come synonymous with.
JamesYanik (548 D)
27 May 16 UTC
@CB in this specific instance I'll agree with you, but a lot of charactes in and out of the marvel universe have been ruined by their original creators. I think this twist is interesting and not at all done as a rash decision, but I'm not going to look forward to the multitude of fanfiction shit that's going to float around wanting pivots on EVERY character that I happen to support (especially marvel)

And trust me... They're coming
TrPrado (461 D)

I think it'll be more about the idea that "anyone can be a hero" even members of Hydra. It's the idea that even if you associate a group with major evil, its people can still do heroic deeds, which was hinted at in the back of Steve's mind throughout.

Fan-Fic: Captain America moves to Hydra to battle the new fascist government of the United States. Trump would be the main antagonist, and istead of the Red Skull he could be the Orange Scalp
KingCyrus (511 D)

One major criticism for this, to argue against the "developing story arc" argument, is that very few superheroes are left who were truly all good. While I understand that it is unrealistic, the one or two who stood out as a paragon was a good thing. You could just about always trust Cap to do the right thing.
TrPrado (461 D)
27 May 16 UTC
Is Hydra inherently evil? Everyone assumes Hydra changes the nature of Steve Rogers, but could it not be the other way around?
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
27 May 16 UTC
@KC- I can see that frustration but still we have no idea what the story will be this could be Cap doing the right thing for the situation. I.e doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. We just don't know. I think people should wait until the series runs its course before we cast serious judgement.
TrPrado (461 D)

In other Marvel related news, the main villain of the Spider-Man movie is going to be Vulture, played by Michael Keaton. That's probably an even greater outrage.

Prado get over it, it's not like anyone watches spiderman movies anyways
TrPrado (461 D)

Yeah but the MCU Spider-Man is enjoyable and Vulture is one of the dumbest villains I can think of.
Lethologica (203 D)
27 May 16 UTC
When in doubt, assume Cap is actually good (because, among other things, it's hard to be enough of a double agent to fool Mjolnir) and the story will warp itself around that basic fact.

That or someone stupid hit Cap with a mind-control ray.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
27 May 16 UTC
I think vulture is a good choice to establish a Spider-Man and make a believable story. His first major outing against a villain should be someone easy. So he can get a feel for the superheroinh business. The. The second movie could be something like green goblin and the third can be venom and then if we get a fourth I'd love to see carnage finally on screen.

The second issue will come out in about a month. Also coming out in June is the first issue of Civil War II which apparently will have the two Captain Americas fighting against each other, as Sam Wilson will be on Iron Man's side, and Steve Rogers will be on Captain Marvel's side.

Sarah Rogers is holding a red napkin. Elisa Sinclair things are not all the red in those memories. Also, that would be a pretty slow acting brainwashing considering he still thought of Red Skull as an adversary. And Hydra already had captured that scientist, and Steve was fighting the one who captured him. #CapIsHydra #GetOverIt #SorryNotSorry

Desperate Dan could defeat all of Hydra before you could say cow pie.

I'm dragged into watching some of this... erm... high art by the other half who is genuinely keen. The Captain America: Civil Disagreement was entertaining enough, I guess, although quite how that ties in with Agents of Shield and Hydra's adoption of the putty men from Power Rangers I don't know.

It's all gone downhill since the cartoons of the 80s/90s

Does Helmut Zemo have a title of nobility? Was his father a Nazi? These are things we need to know.

@TrPrado: I will try to research these Qs. I'm pretty sure baron Zemo was a golden Age foe of Captain America's. comicbookdb.com is pretty good research site, but you have to click on each link to see a cover.
TrPrado (461 D)

Oh, I was referring to the MCU Helmut Zemo. The comic book Helmut Zemo was born into nobility, and he and his father have loyalties to Hydra, neither of which were stated in his cinematic appearance in Civil War.
fourofswords (415 D)

Right. I forgot you meant MCU. The comic book Zemo also was a Nazi, that is the one who appeared first in Avengers #4 in a flashback. He apparently wasn't used in the Golden Age.

Checkmarks and "Ready"
All the time, people claim to see who has marked themselves "Ready" in a game. The only thing that I can see is the checkmark next to powers, which, unless I'm mistaken, means that you have saved moves and won't NMR, but not that you're "Ready" and will process as soon as others all "Ready."

Is there something they see that I don't? Or is this just a broad misconception of what that indicates?
