Considering there was a post about Pokemon GO, ...
I'd like some advice about if it would be good to purchase a Russian Dragon's of Tarkir booster box for about $100 USD? Shipping prices don't matter, as my friend is in Russia at the moment (he is the one actually buying this, and is wondering if he should).

Statistics for ModernDiplomacyII
Is there any statistics about how common is the win by solos. Which nations has the most wins, and who the least wins. And statistics like that.
And also, in general, which variants would you say are the most played, and why?. Any thoughts?.

UK Politics
We have had an elected Head-of_State since forever, we've had a Prime Minister elected with something like 25% of electorate and now he is standing down to be replaced by new PM that no one elected. Home of democracy? I think not.

Meaning of "no in-game messaging"
First-time player question: if a game has a "no in-game messaging" setting, does that mean there's no communication between the players at all? Or is there just a specific kind of messaging the players should/should not use?

*Apologies if this is answered somewhere in the rules or another thread; couldn't find it specifically anywhere.

WDC: One-Month Warning!
First stab at the 2016 World Diplomacy Championship in Chicago is one month from today. More info at http://windycityweasels.org/wdc2016

We have 79 attendees, so far, including webDip luminaries ATC, 2ndWhiteLine and Valis. It's shaping up to be a great event.

The dates are June 24-26, and it will be at Roosevelt University's vertical campus, 425 S Wabash Ave, right in the heart of downtown Chicago. Two rounds on Friday, two on Saturday, and one on Sunday, including the top board to decide the 2016 world championship.

Most questions can be answered at the website, but feel free to message me or post here if you have one.

Sounds awesome. I imagine playing face to face is really different.

It is completely different. I think it's a hell of a lot more fun. The only downside is that you have to wait around for the next game to start if you lose... ;)

If there is anyone that would like to attend but can't find or can't afford a place to stay for whatever reason, someone can stay at my apartment as long as you can deal with a couch. I'm 45 minutes to an hour away from Roosevelt depending on traffic but I have booze. Still not sure if I'm going to be able to play or not, but the train system is pretty easy to deal with.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
25 May 16 UTC
And before anyone asks, yes, booze makes the long commute worth it.
JimTheGrey (968 D(S))

Yah, FtF is different, although it's not tons different from a full-press live game. I wouldn't say one's better than the other or that it's either, or. If you get the opportunity to play FtF, you should absolutely do it. Most people don't get many opportunities to play FtF, which is why online communities like this one are so essential to the hobby.

FtF Tournament Diplomacy is a fantastic experience, though. Can't recommend it enough. And the world championship is always the premier event of the year. This one will be my seventh WDC. (My first tournament ever was the 1998 WDC. If you haven't tried tournament Dip yet, don't be daunted by a WDC. There are always a lot of casual players and inexperienced tournament players in attendance, and this year won't be an exception.)

I've only played face 2 face once and it was some friends that didn't know how to play, no challenge, game lasted til 1904 before they lost interest. I can't make it to Chicago but if there is something in Florida or the southeast I would love to try it out.
DaddyO (350 D)

I don't know all of the Chicago area players but the ones I've met are all exceptional, and a lot of fun. Anyone who is considering it should definitely try to get there. Good pizza too.

Echoing Jim, the hostel is well worth it if space is already taken up on bo's couch.

http://hichicago.org/

It's low-to-no frills but it's clean, quiet, and comfortable, the staff is friendly, and the location is literally unbeatable. It isn't quite cheap as free, but compared to the going rate for other lodging in downtown (places that aren't right across the street from Roosevelt U), the cost is pretty much unbeatable too.

Two quick things about WDC.

First, the tournament will take place on a vertical college campus in an urban environment. The university has a strict guest policy. I need to provide a list of attendees by June 21, so if you're planning to play or think you might, message me so I can get you on the list. The master list is here, for those interested: http://windycityweasels.org/news/953-the-parade-of-tributes. It's up to 87.

Second, if you want to stay in the dorm, you need to book your room by June 15 at 11 p.m. You can find the link to book as well as a link offering other housing suggestions here: http://windycityweasels.org/wdc2016.

Any questions or concerns, message me.

Jim

There are some lots around the building that aren't too bad. I'm going to scout parking spots next weekend or the one after and will post tips on the site.

Traveling in, we have webDip luminaries Valis, A_Tin_Can, 2ndWhiteLine and uclabb. I believe webDip has-been Ava is coming in as well. Active Chicago guys on the site include me, tatertrotts, heffomite and the maddotter.

BoSox and Vecna are also talking about attending. And I'm sure there are lots of others with webDip accounts who will be playing. All told, we now have 94 people on the list of attendees and I'm at the point where I'm debating whether to reserve/purchase additional space at the venue.

Bo: I'm going to scout parking spots this morning and will report back.
JimTheGrey (968 D(S))
14 Jun 16 UTC
Bo: There are a bunch of lots on Wabash, south of the venue, and on Harrison, west of the venue. They'll all run you $25 to $30 for a full day, but it looks like Roosevelt will validate at some of them. Here's a link for more info on that: https://www.roosevelt.edu/CampusCommunity/Parking.aspx

Preregistration for WDC closes at the end of the day on June 20. You can preregister, and save money, at windycityweasels.org/wdc2016. I have to turn in the final attendee list on the 21st. The venue is on a vertical campus in an urban environment, and the university has a strict guest policy.

If you show up unannounced, you can probably still get in, but it likely will be a pain in the ass for both of us. If you don't want to pay now, you can still get on the list just by messaging me, so if there's a good chance you'll be there, let me know.

The count is up to 94 and includes several webDip luminaries, lots of webDip average Joes like me, and a bunch of great players from around the world. Should be a lot of fun. I hope you'll join us.
