I'm working on some statistics reporting for webdip, and I'm interested in what the forum thinks: Are "Gunboat" games just games with no messaging, or are they games with no messaging that are also anonymous?

Rainbow facebook friends
so, i have looked through my friendlis and out of around 98 people, i only have 2 people who have rainbow picks. I am in the center of utah in a community of around 70% mormons, so mine is probably way lower than average. I want to compare it to how off from the usual it is, so how many rainbow friends do you have?

A few people have asked about WTA games - here's some data you might be interested in:

(all games described here are non-live, classic games)

This plot shows the percentages of outcomes in FP WTA games:

http://imgur.com/2Lu8b8r

This shows solos in full press WTA games occur about 45% of the time, and two way draws are only slightly more common than 6-way draws. I've said this before, in a few places but the really cool thing about two way draws is that I think they're the rarest result that can reasonably be called a win.

Here's the same plot for WTA gunboats:

http://imgur.com/ORMuLJn

In our data, solos are slightly more common (around 6%), while two and three way draws are slightly less common (3% and 6%). I didn't do any checking to see if this was statistically significant in any way - it's the weekend, and I have more graphs to make :)

This next plot shows the number of WTA full press games per month:

http://imgur.com/9k1HF6t

You can clearly see the bump where WTA was made the default.

A fun thing we can do with this data is to look at the percentage of solos over time - are we getting better or worse at stopping solos? Let's take a look:

http://imgur.com/Oq2T8o8

I think the answer is "not really". Although there's a big spike on the left of the graph, that could just be because the sample is too small (checking back to the games-per-month-plot, that 100% solo month only included six games).

In fact, we *could* be getting worse, since it looks like there's an uptick on the right of the graph too, corresponding with the increase in games and player pool due to the WTA default. Even if I was prepared to run statistical tests on a Saturday, it's a bit early to tell from this data.

Let's take a look at the games per month for WTA gunboats:

http://imgur.com/RWCz72E

Clearly gunboat is less popular than full press - though that's not particularly surprising. Looking at the right of this graph, the gunboat community seems completely unaffected by the change to WTA as a default.

I also plotted the solo rate for gunboat games, but it's not very interesting:

http://imgur.com/TKmvm9M

Some questions you might have:

* Did you remove games with NMRs or CDs?

No. Our NMR data was incorrect before February this year (when the RR bugs were ironed out). Similarly, removing games with CDs is a challenge, since the system previously didn't log CDs where a member CDed and then came back to the game. These issues are now fixed, and sometime I'll have a look at the NMR rate since February.

* What period does this data cover?

I used the GR dump from June, which only includes a few games from June. This is why the solo rate is so high for the gunboat games on the right - it only includes 4 games.

* Did you exclude ANY games?

Yes. These plots don't include any games which ended before A03, since those games don't have the opportunity end in a solo without CDs. For this reason, GR doesn't consider them either. Also, this only shows non-live, Classic WTA games.

I vaguely recall being told that in the early days of the site getting a draw was rather difficult, and demanded mod intervention or something along those lines.

My phone won't let me see the graphs properly, sadly. Are there seasonal variations? Do you get more draws at Christmas :p?
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
27 Jun 15 UTC
Oct: I believe it's true that games used to require mod intervention to draw. And, before we had buttons, there was posting "\draw" in global.

Coming soon: Draw and pause buttons that are further apart.

Question time - which two users are tied for the most FP WTA Classic solos (13 wins each)?

dyager_nh (619 D)
27 Jun 15 UTC
Wait...what? 13 is the highest number of solos people have in WTA Full Press Classic? That seems kind of low since I have 12 wins especially after hearing that solos show up 45% of the time.

That 45% number astounds me because wouldnt that imply people should be walking around with win ratios higher than 10%?
Nescio (1059 D)

Full press, no press, full press, full press, no press, no press. Where are the graphs stats and graphs of the limited or public press games.

I don't know who's achieved thirteen solo-victories, but I suppose it's someone who's finished a lot of games. It's far more interesting to know who has the highest percentage of full press classic solo-victories.
dyager_nh, yes, of course there are people with win ratios significantly higher than a mere 10% :)
thorfi (1023 D)

45% solo per game, 1/7 players = average individual solo rate of 45/7% = 6 3/7 %.

Dyager: I think the 45% figure suggests that the background solo rate for everyone is about six and a half percent (assuming the distribution of game outcomes is the actual probability distribution, and assuming all players are equally likely to solo, both of which are terrible assumptions). But, it can be used to argue that if your solo rate is 7% or above, you're doing better than random (though again, it's hard to know if that's meaningful without statistical tests).

I was surprised by the low figure too (and also surprised to discover that I didn't have to remove banned cheaters from the top list- I figured one of the two seriously prolific cheaters caught a year or two back would hold this title, but no).

I might draw up a plot of the distributions for solos per player, too.

Nesico: Public Press is far less common that gunboat, so the monthly plots are not very interesting.

The top WTA Classic FP Soloists are:

Perry6006 userID=17783
MadMarx userID=5210

Both tied with 13 solos. They're both inactive, too, so the position is ripe for the taking!

Aaand the number of solos per country:

136 Italy
144 Austria
185 Germany
198 England
216 Turkey
239 France
262 Russia

Step it up, Italy.

Any chance of smoothing that last graph with a rolling average of ... The last N games prior to date? Also what's the time scale? Lifetime of site?
VillageIdiot (7813 D)
28 Jun 15 UTC
Was going to ask the same question on the date sample.

Any analysis that may explain some of these trends? Were changes in the site related (especially to that spike or early solos) and are trends in certain country success highs and lows perhaps due to specific top players coming and going that tend to do better with certain countries?
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
28 Jun 15 UTC
The range is the same as the other WTA plots - ie, from March 2008 to (roughly) present.

That spike at the beginning is interesting. The early data doesn't contain many games (I think WTA took a short time to catch on), but I don't think that's all of it. I suspect that the spike might represent the time where mod intervention was needed to draw a game, but I haven't confirmed it.

With the low numbers of WTA solos per individual member, I don't think specific top players are likely to be directly responsible for trends. The more recent French bump I think was site fashion - mid way through last year, I think early game attacks on France were unfashionable, so France tended to do very well.

I still don't see England open to the channel very often, though. Chris Martin has an excellent strategy article about England's London fleet:

Out of curiosity, how many of legendary zultar's "won: 33 ( 33% )" are actually classic full press winner-takes-all games?
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
28 Jun 15 UTC
3 games for classic FP WTA. I played an even mix of PPSC, WTA, FP, GB, live and non-live. I also picked up a lot of CDed games, so not really legendary at all.
