Being a stand up ally!!!
I know diplomacy was originally designed as a game to win, but this site and the points and GR seemed to have changed the way you can look at the game.
How do people feel about being a good ally? For example, 5 player left in a game m and 3 are on one side while two are on the other. It's pretty much a stalemate unless one of the sides is willing to stab the other. Should one always stab, or is there something to be said about being a good ally to the end?

Alcohol prohibition in Kerala

Now where have we seen that tried and failed ...... grow up India.
Ever considered the reason why there seems to be a problem is because people like drinking alcohol and that's why the ban won't work dickheads

American Empire Anomaly
Howdy folks,

I've noticed that all the Fall of the American Empire IV games are either extremely fast (5 minute rounds) or extremely slow (3 day rounds). Could anyone explain the apparent disinterest in 1-day-round games for this variant?

AEST live game 9am tomorrow morning?
Living in Australia, it's hard to get in to many live games. Would there be interest in a Sunday morning AEST live game tomorrow? (that's the east coast of Australia for those playing at home).

internal criticism
What are your views on "internal criticism", as introduced here:

Putin33 (111 D)

Internal criticism = criticism of allies.

I don't believe in initiating public criticisms of allies and in most cases don't believe in responding even if allies do engage in such criticism. Such discussions should be in-house and constructive. Public airing of grievances only serves as fodder for the enemy and impresses nobody but the enemy. After a while repeated public attacks on 'friends' make me conclude that such people work for the enemy.

What should be public, then? Should the elected members of a party take direction from people making decisions behind closed doors?

I believe in calling out anyone who needs calling out. Allies aren't so static, nor will you necessarily be allied across all topics. I'm happy to work with Paulites against drone strikes or the drugs war, for example, but I'd hardly consider them allies in general.

To believe that there are people who are allies, and everyone else, is to see the world as far more black and white than it really is.
Putin33 (111 D)
22 Aug 14 UTC
"What should be public, then?"

Everything else. It's a simple rule, really. Don't embarrass your friends in front of your enemies. If you have criticism of your friends, do it politely and in private. And also don't criticize local decisions made by an allied party. You're not there, so defer to their judgment.

"Should the elected members of a party take direction from people making decisions behind closed doors"

Elected members of a party should take direction from their elected leadership and party manifesto which they voted on.

"To believe that there are people who are allies, and everyone else, is to see the world as far more black and white than it really is."

The goal is to rally the advanced and isolate the backward. There are people who agree with you more than they disagree with you, and you should promote coalition building over trying to be 'right' all the time.

Unfortunately, for some people feeling good about themselves matters more than getting anything done.
mendax (321 D)
23 Aug 14 UTC
Again you try to split the entire population into two distinct groups, even in your goal. This is pretty much impossible to do in reality.
Putin33 (111 D)
23 Aug 14 UTC
No it is not impossible, which is why party building and organizing continues to occur even if some on the left deny that it can be done.

mendax (321 D)

And everyone falls neatly into 2 parties, right?
Putin33 (111 D)
23 Aug 14 UTC
No, but you don't even identify leftists as allies. Is it really so difficult to determine that socialists and other anti-capitalists are allies and reactionaries are enemies? Is that really too categorical for you?
mendax (321 D)
23 Aug 14 UTC
Yes. Some leftists are xenophobic warhawks. I am not allied with them. I'm happy to work with them on some issues, but not on everything.
One of the reasons the (hard) left struggles so much is because relatively small differences stop cooperation, and we focus on (relatively) trivial differences. I may disagree with a lot of other leftists on a lot of things, but fighting each other, instead of the real enemy is a problem that undermines the movement, to the benefit of the real enemy. Until success is already achieved, allies shouldn't really be criticised publically, or in a way that is not constructive

I'm sure it happens on both sides, so don't take this as a shot across the aisle, but I wince a little every time I see political opponents described as "enemies." Is this really necessary? (But perhaps it is just part of a kind of war metaphor, as in "the enemy of my enemy is my friend," and not meant too seriously).

@ semck: " I wince a little every time I see political opponents described as "enemies." Is this really necessary?"

The Conservative Party in the UK, which is currently in power, is currently perpetrating an all-out attack on the poor, the needy, and the vulnerable, directly harming thousands of families. They know that their policies are directly harmful to a section of society which was already struggling, and they don't care.

Yes, they are my enemy. Enemy is exactly the right word for one's political opponents in some cases.

A guide to not being gullible
I am playing a game currently where a player is believing that his "ally" won't stab him even though his ally is well on their way to a solo and the gullible player is tied up fighting me. I am trying to organize against the solo threat but gullible prevails. Any tips for gullible players?

Are you a bit older? Don't have the oppressive need for instant gratification?
I'm looking to start a classic game with 3-5 day phases. I'm currently thinking about a 100+ point buy-in, but I can definitely bend on that. I only ask that you be able to explain any CDs on your record as either a live game or some sort of extenuating circumstance. Anyone interested?

Race riots. Ironic too that they're happening in St. Louis, one of the only cities that didn't have much violence back in the 60s. The police couldn't resist.

Convoying a Retreating unit
Suppose an English army unit is at Holland and is attacked by German unit from Kiel with support from Ruhr and Belgium. In normal case it is forced to disband because it doesn't have anywhere to retreat to.
But what if we allow the English fleet at north sea to convoy the retreating army unit to some place; say Edinburgh?
Is this feasible? If yes, then how will it affect the game overall?
