The Automated Revolution
So the other day I came upon this video by CGP Grey about automation and the future of humanity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pq-S557XQU
So, how do you feel about the increasing automation in our world? Relieved? Terrified? Unsure? And what is humanity to do about it?

Hi. My name is: Noob.
I'm new to both Diplomacy and webDiplomacy, so I'm having a hard time figuring out the support-hold and support-move system. I have a rough understanding of how it works just based off the tutorials I've been watching online on the game, and reading through the basic rules, but I CANNOT figure out how to order units to support-hold and support-move, which order I need to command the units in order for the support command to be available and such. more>

Important Question
I understand that I will lose the points, but how do I withdraw from a game. I have two going and I accidently signed up for the game Diplomacy20 with first moves to be submitted tonight. I am already involved in the games Drawn Out and August Rumble, but I don't want to play in a third simultaneously at this time.

Thanks.

2000D bet, WTA full press game
Hey forum, so my last game finished and a ceded my spot in the ghost rating tournament so that someone else can play. But now I find myself short of games and looking for a challenge. Anyone feeling up to a highstake game?
damian (675 D)
05 Aug 14 UTC
Semi-anon, or non-anon I don't care which.
Phases have to be 48hrs or longer.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
06 Aug 14 UTC
Sure, but 48 hours is the most I'll go. I'm fine with semi-anon or non-anon, but it must be WTA.
damian (675 D)
06 Aug 14 UTC
Alright. 48hours it is.
Yeah WTA for sure.

I don't mind being a little flexible on bet size if its keeping others from playing

1. damian
2. MadMarx

Any other takers?

If you can't get enough with a 2000 D bet, I'd join if you bump it down to 1000 D. So, put me on reserve.
KingJohnII (1575 D(B))
06 Aug 14 UTC
Wow, big bet. If you can wait until early September I will be up for this. Although I would also prefer 1,000.
I would prefer Anon please, with no one revealing identities; especially for this size of bet....
guak (3381 D)

I would join. Prefer anon too.

Like KingJohnII, I can probably play in early September.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
06 Aug 14 UTC
Early September works for me, especially if that means we get to play with KingJohnII and peterwiggin. I've always enjoyed ag7433 as well, if we want half the stakes, but the 2000 point bet is what initially caught my attention...
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
06 Aug 14 UTC
The list for 2000 D now:

1. damian
2. MadMarx
3. guak
damian (675 D)
07 Aug 14 UTC
Early September is A-Okay with me. So I think that's what we'll do. By semi-anon I mean we all know who is playing, but not who is playing what power. I'm willing to consider a smaller bet of others are so inclined. Maybe 1500?
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
07 Aug 14 UTC
I'm fine with 1500, still gets the pot to five figures
damian (675 D)
07 Aug 14 UTC
Peter, Kingjohn, with a september start and a slightly smaller bet would both of you be in? If so we have 5, and just need two more.

Hah why not, I am in :). MadMarx i can see why you like 2000... after all you have a few points to spare!!
Looks like a great field though, it would be a pleasure to compete, even if i will likely lose a few points :)
KingJohnII (1575 D(B))

Thanks, Sandgoose, the kid is doing very well! There is a bit of sitting around with him, so I figured I'd try out a game or two, we'll see how it goes...

MadMarx (36299 D(G))

Has a decision been made on if we're betting 2000 or 1500, seems unclear to me (and may affect getting a 7th)?
guak (3381 D)
10 Aug 14 UTC
Either bet works for me.
damian (675 D)
10 Aug 14 UTC
Same here. Depends on what Peter and KingJohn would prefer. They both have the points to play 2000, so if a 2000 bid isn't a no go for them I'd say we go for 2000.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
10 Aug 14 UTC
I wonder if the mods would spot someone the points to be our seventh... Or zultar could just sign up... Either way...
damian (675 D)
10 Aug 14 UTC
I can ask for an executive decision on that, but as I understand it the general rule is no.
But yeah, Zultar, Eden and Bo all have the points
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
10 Aug 14 UTC
The mods are always giving away points to join GR Challenge games... Anyway, I'm going to play Eden in another game, and Zultar claims to be out, but Bo is an option!
peterwiggin (15158 D)
10 Aug 14 UTC
Yeah I stabbed Bo last time, and then somebody else soloed, so I feel like I have to make it up to him.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
10 Aug 14 UTC
Nah, not me. I can give myself 14,000 D whenever I want; I don't need to take it from all of you.
damian (675 D)
11 Aug 14 UTC
bump.
I've been asking around but so far not much luck. I'm going to give it a couple more days. If nobody else bites at 2000 we can drop to 1500 and maybe ag can play?
Dunecat (5899 D)
11 Aug 14 UTC
Heyo, I'm interested at 2000 D or 3000 D but I need 72-hour phases at this level :)
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
11 Aug 14 UTC
Every time I play 48 hour phases I swear I'll never do it again, the game drags along so slowly... I figure it'll be okay with a new baby in the house, but no way I can play 72 hour phases, Dunecat *please* reconsider! :-)
damian (675 D)

Would 60hrs with an agreement to finalize builds and retreats as soon as you get to them. (No negotiation allowed except during the fall and spring phases) be a fair compromise? As per the original rules.
peterwiggin (15158 D)
11 Aug 14 UTC
(+1)
I would very heavily prefer exactly 48 hour turns. I find it difficult to get negotiations done at 36, and 72 just takes too long.

Damian, how would you enforce the no negotiations clause?
guak (3381 D)
11 Aug 14 UTC
Well, I think builds and retreats are sometimes important to negotiate. Could the agreement be to finalize them during the first 24 hours?
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
12 Aug 14 UTC
I strongly prefer 36 hours, if it were up to me, and I much prefer 24 hours to 48 hours, but I'm willing to go with the majority as far as the 60 hour compromise (I didn't even know that was an option, though I remember 50 hours being there, at least once upon a time)...
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
12 Aug 14 UTC
Oh, I'd prefer retreats and builds just have the normal time frame, no special agreement, though everyone is free to finalize quickly...
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
12 Aug 14 UTC
When I start a new game, phases can be 2 days, 3 days, and 2 days 2 hours. I'm fine with 2 days 2 hours.
damian (675 D)
12 Aug 14 UTC
Yeah, looks like 60 hours isn't an option. I really thought it would be. No negotiations would be honour system. But yeah, doesn't sound like that would be the best way to go.

We'll have to here what Dunecat has to say, but as I understand it he's got some crazy workshifts that make even 2days/phase hard.
Dunecat (5899 D)
12 Aug 14 UTC
What would be amazing, if I may say so, is phase length per phase type:

1. 60-hour diplomacy phase, full press
2. 12-hour retreat phase, press disabled
3. 12-hour build phase, press disabled
VillageIdiot (7813 D)
12 Aug 14 UTC
I really can't do any more then 48 hours, would certainly prefer less if possible. Have a baby coming end of October so trying to aim for this to be done or almost done by that time.
peterwiggin (15158 D)
12 Aug 14 UTC

There's a site where you can do that . . . and get real partial press. Too bad there are really no players there anymore.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
12 Aug 14 UTC

VillageIdiot (7813 D)
12 Aug 14 UTC

damian (675 D)
12 Aug 14 UTC
Well if Dunecat can't do 48 hours. Since that seems to be what works best for everyone else. The Czech has expressed interest in taking position #7
damian (675 D)
13 Aug 14 UTC
Here's our list
1. damian
2. Madmarx
3. guak
4. Villageidiot
5. KingJohnII
6. Peterwiggin
7. Dunecat (if he can play 48hr phases) or The Czech (if Dunecat cannot play)

If people want 36 hour phases, since we're starting in September I can actually do that as well. Its only if we were starting right away that I needed 48hr phases.
peterwiggin (15158 D)

Alright. So our game is: 48hr WTA, anonymous full press. 2000 D bet.
I'll make the game on the 4th of September, with 72 hours for everyone to join.
Expect a PM from me with your password! If any of you decide you have to drop the game before it starts shoot me a PM and I'll let The Czech know he's on the list.
