The Automated Revolution
So the other day I came upon this video by CGP Grey about automation and the future of humanity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pq-S557XQU
So, how do you feel about the increasing automation in our world? Relieved? Terrified? Unsure? And what is humanity to do about it?

Hi. My name is: Noob.
I'm new to both Diplomacy and webDiplomacy, so I'm having a hard time figuring out the support-hold and support-move system. I have a rough understanding of how it works just based off the tutorials I've been watching online on the game, and reading through the basic rules, but I CANNOT figure out how to order units to support-hold and support-move, which order I need to command the units in order for the support command to be available and such. more>

For simplicity sake, let's say I'm occupying Turkey, with a unit in Syria and a unit in Armenia and I want my unit in Syria to advance to Smyrna with support from Amenia. Which order would be correct. Does it work the same with fleets also?

Many thanks.

Army - Syria move to Smyrna
Army - Armena support move Syria to Smyrna.

Same with fleets. Support holds only work if the unit they are support holding isn't moving.

Welcome to the site!

In order to issue a support to a moving unit, the supporting unit needs to be adjacent to both the moving unit and the destination. In your example, Syria indeed borders Armenia and Smyrna. In this case, the orders would be as follows:

A Arm - Smy
A Syr s A Arm - Smy

If the defending player wanted to support hold Smyrna, they could issue the following orders:

A Smy hold
A Con s A Smy hold

In the WebDiplomacy interface, a unit which is able to offer support is automatically presented with that option in their moves. Given the numerous alliance combinations, a unit will be presented with the support option as long as it is in a position to support any other unit, fleet or army, regardless of ownership of the other units.

If you would like to learn more about how the support orders work, I would suggest downloading an adjudication program such as jDip or Realpolitik.

Wait. I thought the ability to support moves and holds was monetized. That's why I PM'd my Chase bank account number to abge..........Oh, boy.

Welcome to the site!

Also, note that the drop-down menus for entering a support move puts the destination first.

Oh, and welcome to the site. It's great to have new blood here. Take note that if you have a set of moves put in, but don't hit save, but send a message, you have to re-enter the orders.

Welcome. Also sometimes the community will hold a tribunal and tax your diplomacy points for use on public parks and street repair in the territories you damage. Try to tell your army to minimize collateral damage it's bad press for the site. CNN picks up everything on here. It's like Anderson cooper has nothing better to do. Every night at 930 eastern standard time he has a story about some noob over bombing Tunisia with an air fleet. It's sad.

Just to clarify one thing 2ndWhiteLine wrote, to support a unit that is moving you do NOT need to be adjacent to the unit, you only have to be adjacent to the destination. So a unit in Constantinople could support a unit moving from Syria to Smyrna even though Con does not border Syria. It only has to border Smyrna.

Thanks for clarifying that yale, I was focused on the Smyrna/Armenia/Syria border and not thinking of the actual rule.

Important Question
I understand that I will lose the points, but how do I withdraw from a game. I have two going and I accidently signed up for the game Diplomacy20 with first moves to be submitted tonight. I am already involved in the games Drawn Out and August Rumble, but I don't want to play in a third simultaneously at this time.

Thanks.

What are your memories of, or thoughts on, the pivot from the 1960's to the 1980's?

(Nevermind the 1970's, they were just more 1960's, with a hangover.)
