Paul Walker, Bill Beckwith, and....
....Ambrosio Vilhalva.

Who? RIP... someday Indian movie stars and activists will make headlines too...

Someday people will stop idolizing humans for dying in tragic and stupid ways...<vomit...>

Someday we will learn to care about ordinary citizens as much as we pretend to care about the facades of humanity tailored for your viewing pleasure.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Ambrosio was as much an ordinary citizen to the average eye as you and I, krellin.

Bo - sorry - don't know who he is. But I was sickened by the coverage of Walker that I saw that seemed more concerned with how his movie franchise would be impacted than anything else - no mention of grieving family and...oh...yeah...by the way some anonymous person also died in the car, but we don't give a shit about him. Made me want to vomit.
Invictus (240 D)

Obviously Paul Walker's death is as sad as any car crash death is, but I wonder if a less handsome B-list actor would have inspired the same public response.
krellin (80 DX)
04 Dec 13 UTC
Yes, but are you sad about the anonymous guy that was in the car with Paul Walker, whom the media has all but ignored? Are you sad about the family in your town that was killed by a drunk driver last week? Or...

I'm offended that I am constantly told by the media that I am supposed to have special sadness in my heart for ...make sure you grasp this now...the passing away of the facades of humanity that have been constructed for my viewing pleasure...

You are not sad in the least about the death of Paul Walker - the human being that you know just about nothing about. If you are sad, you are sad because a movie character will no longer appear on the big screen to please you, and we're supposed to act like this is sorrow for the man. Sorry, but your crocodile tears are for 1%'er movie execs in the movie industry that on any other day half the good libs around here would despise for their wealth...

(Oh...wait...we like hypocritical rich Hollywood types. It's just bankers that are evil. What was I thinking...)
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

The anonymous guy, you mean Roger Rodas, an excellent racer? The media hasn't ignored him, and he's certainly not anonymous to other racers.

Are you really telling us not to be sad that this guy left such a legacy behind, that Walker died at 40 and Rodas at 38, that Rodas' 8-year-old son was one of the first trying to pull them out of a burning car? Is it not sad to you? Is the murder of an activist fighting one of the greatest serial crimes in world history that starred in movies for years and won awards for his talent and his message not sad to you?

Fuck you.
krellin (80 DX)
04 Dec 13 UTC
Bo - panties in a bunch much? By all appearances you have dug up much more information on these dead people (Paul and the anonymous guy) than most media cares to report.

I'm not telling you to not be sad. I'm telling you to not be a fucking hypocrite, and be sad for the family in your town that died in a drunk driving accident, or maybe the family a block over who just lost their son to the endless war in Afghanistan? Oh...wait...you didn't know about them...they aren't carefully crafted public facades that make you cream your pants...

Just because someone isn't sad for someone he doesn't even know the existence of, let be his death, doesn't mean he's a hypocrite. You can't mourn someone you perceive alive very well.

That said, these 2 guys dying touches me less than the fact that someone dies of poverty at least every 3 seconds.

I left a large margin there on purpose. 3 seconds was perceived the amount of deaths through poverty in Africa.

"Just because someone isn't sad for someone he doesn't even know the existence of, let be his death, doesn't mean he's a hypocrite. "

Uhhh....are you actually suggesting that Bo has some *real* knowledge of Paul Walker or these other people. THAT is exactly what I'm talking about...the gullible sheep with the crocodile tears in his eyes pretending like he knows who Paul Walker is because he's watched all 5 Fast and Furious movies and reads the Hollywood blog posts about him and therefore thinks he's just a great, swell guy.

For all we know he's a chauvenistic pig that blows him money on coke and kicks homeless men. *Carefully crafted media persona*...you people think you know these people, of "know of their existence"....please, you know *nothing* of their actual existence, other than what the media crafts in 20 second sound bites for you to adore.

That family that killed...you know a lot more about them, even though you don't know their names, because they live in your town, eat at the same restaurants, have the same struggles and joys as opposed to the facade you see coming from Hollywood. That family...they also work for charity, or donate their money, or help people in need...they just don't do it with a sparking smile in front of a camera, so Bo doesn't give a shit about them...
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Oh, Paul Walker is a mystery to me, but a random unnamed family in my town that fell victim to a drunk driving accident is automatically best friends with me. Why, well duh, they live somewhat near me. Is that like a midwestern rednecks-know-everyone stereotype or something? I don't even know how you come to that conclusion.

Krellin, if I know someone that died, I go to their funeral. I went to my teacher's father's funeral a few months ago. Most people don't talk to their teachers, let alone know who their father is, let alone know their father on a first name basis, let alone listen as their grandfather's condolences are read aloud in one of the eulogies. THAT is what you do for people you know. That's what I do. You don't just say, "Oh, you died, sorry, life sucks - oh wait, haha, didn't mean it like that." That's what you're doing.

"For all we know he's a chauvenistic pig that blows him money on coke and kicks homeless men."

And for all we know he's exactly the kind of person his FAMILY and FRIENDS - you know, people who KNOW him - say he is. What the hell are you? For all we know that random person that died in a drunk driving accident was a murderer that didn't get convicted, but we DON'T SAY THAT because we have a BRAIN.

Krellin, you don't know me. You don't know that I was the youngest volunteer in Special Olympics Indiana by over a full year when I started. That was seven years ago. I was 11. Stop being your favorite word, a hypocrite, by making claims you can't back up against people. Stop saying I don't give a shit about people, and stop telling me not to give a shit about people because I don't know them.

You say that Paul Walker could have been a shitface so we shouldn't care about him. For your information, since obviously you are so infatuated in criticizing the media that you haven't even listened to what they learned about Paul Walker so that REAL PEOPLE can be sad over his death, Walker and Roger Rodas, or, as you call him, anonymous guy, together started Reach Out Worldwide in 2007. But he's a chauvinistic pig that blows his money on coke and kick homeless men, right? Because you say so, right?

Once again... fuck you.

krellin:

I don't care if he's a pig. Any death I know of deserves a moment of silence for me. I don't know who this dude is. But I do feel a bit of sadness, even while thinking of the irony of a guy in Fast and Furious movies dying in a car accident.

Trying to start up a very slow classic game...
I'm thinking the full 10 day phases with somewhere in the neighborhood of a 200-250 point buy-in. Anon or non-anon, WTA or PPSC are both up for negotiation as far as I'm concerned. Are there 6 others out there that would be interested in a game like this? I think I am going to require that no one in this game have any CDs on their record with such long phases, though.

Let's say I want to introduce a new digital currency
And it's not a way to make money, it's just to see how I could introduce a new digital currency, perhaps as an alternative to bitcoin, how would I do it? And I'm not talking about how I'd build the website, or how I could advertise it: I'm interested in the principle of a digital currency that is simply launched.

What to visit in Asia
I'm going to study in Hong Kong (the place down there where they don't eat people) for a while so I could use some pointers in what to visit in nearby Asian locations by veritable globetrotters of webDip. Please understand that I'm on a student budget that will be severely strained by gambling orgies in Macao and Thai shemale hookers and blow coined by the vodka refreshment on my trans-siberian railway road back to Europe so be considerate of the possible price tags.

U.S. Minimum Wage Increase
This is aimed primarily at conservatives or rightists, if you oppose raising the minimum wage what is your alternative solution? As it has been a frequent item of forum discussion around here - the fact that we have large group of high school kids playing -- is there a way we can find out which players are associated outside the game (i.e. who logs in from the same IP?) to prevent players from getting in games with the high school gamers?
