A Call for Blind Diplomacy Voting (only see your own votes)
Diplomacy should be carried out through your moves, and if press is allowed, through your press, but not through voting signals. Some conspiracy theorists believe their are hidden meanings in unusual votes -- in my experience it is b/c of us cell phone players with fat fingers... Gunboat should not have this communication tool, and in press you can reveal or lie about your votes all you like...

An actual philosophy variant
Choose a philosophical school of thought. If the philosopher fundamentally changed during his writing career, you must also choose which text(s) you will be following. Then, you must hold to that philosophy in all discussions and movements. Why not PP, 5 D, 50hr phases, WTA, orders must be announced. If someone can demonstrate how a proposed action goes against your philosophy, you may not take that action and must do something else. Critiques?

krellin can you provide proof of your existence?
semck83 (229 D(B))

Thucy, krellin has been pretty clear that he doesn't actually want YJ to be quiet. Why, then, would he want this debate? Neither outcome is something he desires.
TheFlyingBoat (2743 D)

I am unbiased lol. I don't know much about either of you two :P

@YJ "Thinking about what emotions are really going through krellin's mind when he insists he's "laughing his ass off." "

That would be "smug superiority" as I relish in my continuing victories over you. and delighted humor as I continue to mock you.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
29 Mar 13 UTC
@semck: true, true. What he does want, though is to "win" (whatever that means). I think I see the flaw in my logic here when proposing this debate. I thought there would be more than enough incentive, if "winning" is his goal. But again, that's dealing with a normal person. In happy kitten land, krellin has already declared himself winner, so why would he risk that?

It's pretty hard to continue maintaining one's illusion of victory (as above) when you've just lost a formal challenge with clear rules spelled out. Remember how he broke down on election night? That's what happens when happy kitten land crash lands into reality.
krellin (80 DX)
29 Mar 13 UTC
You can not lose what you do not accept. The very premise of you "challenge" was your own defeat: YOU are afraid of havign discussions on various topics. Oh sure...you wanted an *off-site* "debate" on three topics, after which one person would be banished - i.e. no more discussion. What a coward you are.

I, on the other hand, relish the opportunity to pick apart you feeble arguments on a vast and continuous array of topics on a continuous basis in front of everyone.

You want hide from on-going debate. You openly admit you won't reply to my discussions.

Therefore, I have won before we even start, both in principle and in practice, by your own words and intent.

hey krellin, would you like to make an election prediction for 2016?
krellin (80 DX)
29 Mar 13 UTC
And...while I know you think it somehow an insult to refer to "happy kitten land”, it is not.

As background for others, my family frequently fosters litters of abandoned kittens for the local government animal shelter. Somehow the deranged mind of YJ see’s this act of charity and kindness towards animals as negative and chooses to attack it…it ought to tell you something about the character of YJ…
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 Mar 13 UTC
I'll make that prediciotn YJ! Two people with the best odds of winning will run: one from each party. But it won't matter which one wins, we will still be totally fucked.
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 Mar 13 UTC
Oh, and YJ, he lost nothing because your original post said he could make modifications and those would be discussed. He has offered modifications to your terms. You refuse to discuss them. That means *you* lose and he wins by default. He followed your rules. He said "lets modify the terms" when you offered to do just that. Epic. Fucking. Fail. <grin>
murraysheroes (526 D(B))
29 Mar 13 UTC
May I tack on to your prediction, Draugnar? The Republicans will chose some pasty fat cock who obviously cares more for special interests than the country at large. The Democrats will choose an ineffective platform that can never make it through the litany of Teabaggers ready to oppose it tooth and nail. And we, as the citizens, will wonder yet again why we only have to parties to choose from.
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 Mar 13 UTC
And just to be clear, you have actually violated the rules of this debate from the start...

"Below I have laid out some tentative parameters. If any are unacceptable to the opposition I would cheerfully negotiate modifications."

He found some unacceptable but you have been anything except "cheerful" or even willing to "negotiate modifications".
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 Mar 13 UTC
Now, murray... I intentionally was completyely unbiased in my prediciton. Why did you have to go and bring politics into it and make nasty implications about any one the Republican party picks? I could have just as easily said the Dummycrats will pick some fucking treehugger who claims to know more about science and has invented something that was around when he was still in high school, but I didn't go there. Why the fuck you gotta be that way?
murraysheroes (526 D(B))
29 Mar 13 UTC
Draugnar, I guess I let my bias show...I'm liberal--very liberal, but I'm a big fan of the "Team America" addage: Republicans are assholes, but the Democrats are pussies. I'm a liberal, but I'm definitely not a Democrat; hence my lament of our ridiculous two-party system.
murraysheroes (526 D(B))
29 Mar 13 UTC
Also, you're welcome for the extra "d" in "adage." I did it for you.
jimgov (219 D(B))
29 Mar 13 UTC
@Draug - I do not believe that your basic premise on the modifications are correct. You are correct that YJ said

"Below I have laid out some tentative parameters. If any are unacceptable to the opposition I would cheerfully negotiate modifications."

He then laid out complete parameters for the debate. Three topics, three moderators, off site, etc. It was very detailed and, IMO, rationally complete.

In response to this, Krellin said

If you want to debate, chase me obsessively around the forums, as you already do like some mental pervert, and answer me point for point there.

The term modify is almost always used in the sense that you are making minor changes to something. Krellin's proposal is not a minor change at all, but a wholesale trashing of one idea and replacing it with another.

Therefore, I do not believe that Krellin has actually offered up a modification of the above mentioned debate and, therefore, you cannot declare him the winner by default.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

Who won?
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
29 Mar 13 UTC
thank you jimgov, for stating the obvious to a man who shouldn't need it. krellin's offer for "modification" was merely an invitation for me and him to continue going as we had been, with no changes, no stakes, no rules, and no real debate.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
29 Mar 13 UTC
haha nigee krellin won. You can ask him yourself.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
29 Mar 13 UTC
but really, draugnar. Let's move past all that. I really will extend krellin an olive branch. If he's not willing to have a formal debate, I'd truly like to put our animosity behind us. Can you find a post like the one CF was looking for?
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 Mar 13 UTC
@jim - Krellin presented alternatives to the paramters. He found them objectionable. Admittedly, it wasn't what YJ intended or expected for the modifications, but they were modifications. Those being "no three topics, no outside the forum locale, no judges, no one going away for a year". Basically, all the parameters were objected to. But they were modifications. Modify does not imply minor at all. That would be *minor* mdodifications. As a developer, I often make major modifications, sometimes completely throwing out entire routines, classes, or sub projects fromt he solution and starting over. We still call it modifying the system.
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 Mar 13 UTC
@YJ - I have neither the time nor inclination to waste it. Sorry. Getting ready to head home for the weekend and enjoy my Easter holiday.
krellin (80 DX)
29 Mar 13 UTC
Actually - and more to the point - I didn't offer to modify anything, I simply rejected the offer out of hand as childish and stupid.

I don't agree with the principle of limiting discussions, and then ending access to discussions. If YJ isn't man enough to stick around when I am here, he may leave, but I sure as hell will not have my future actions dictate, for good or ill, by the likes of YJ - who openly confesses that he refuses to engage in conversation with me...and then commands me to debate him.

That the likes of jimgov, Thucy and other YJ minions fall for such foolishness tells you a little about their intellectual integrity and mental capacity for logic.

Thus, I will continue to mock them and insult them...as they are worthy of little else than my disdain. Clearly their true capacity to debate is lacking, as they can not even follow simple logical progressions. It's a wonder they can even log on to their accounts without assistance...Perhaps someone should clear their cache and auto-logins and see if they don't disappear forever; but then we would lose the fun of repeatedly humiliating them.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
29 Mar 13 UTC
that's all fine, draugnar, but you must agree in essence it was an invitation to change absolutely nothing from the norm, right? It's just an invitation to participate in another rant-fest that will devolve into a shitstorm, just like every other "debate" with krellin.

Arguing the definition of modification with jim doesn't change that.

"I'd truly like to put our animosity behind us"
Hey looks like I've missed something here .... animosity, when did all that start?
All I saw was a couple of anonymous forum posters calling each other names and swearing a bit ... I thought that's what trolls did all the time, shouted at each other on-line.
You can usually tell if things have turned nasty when people start typing with the caps lock on, that can be messy. Thank the Lord we haven't got emoticons !!
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 Mar 13 UTC
Oh, I agree the modifications were to "maintain the status quo". But you didn't put a limit on how much could be modified. KRellin cause it rejection. I call it modification into elimination.
krellin (80 DX)
29 Mar 13 UTC
Actually YJ, I did not offer to go on as we have. Again...your reading comprehension leave *much* to be desired. To go on as we have would mean you being an intellectual midget and a coward, coming on the threads to throw in sults, refusing to engage in discussion, and then running off to create "hey krellin" threads.

What I have offered, you blithering idiot, is that you MAN UP and actually have a discussion with me in the various threads as they occur on various topics, just like every other member of this community.

You can continue to twist in the wind and *lie* openly, even as you contradict yourself - but anyone with integrity that has read your open confessions about your behavior, and has read my desire to openly have discussion with you, knows that you are truly a fraud and an intellectual coward, YJ.

Draugnar, you truly are a master at saying things that are true while evading the point entirely. You can call it whatever you want. That's semantics.

But the effect is that he is unwilling to change the format of our discussion, yes?

Thanks for everyone's patience during the server upgrade, for some reason it took them three hours, so it took much longer than I expected. I've added time to all games, if anyone spots anything out of place let me know.
On the bright side once this has settled down the server should have more capacity..

How does one leave a game?
I have no intentions of leaving any games I'm in, but I invited a friend to join the site and he joined a bunch of games, then decided he just didn't understand the game. Rather than stick around and ruin things for everyone, I've convinced him to just leave but I don't see that option anywhere. Help?

Why does anyone play live gunboat games?
Don't get me wrong, they're fun enjoyable things to do, even though I'm not too good in them myself, but, NMRs and CDs are rampant, and you get opportunistic wankers that refuse to draw/cancel even though everyone else has their draw/cancel votes up and game ettiqute demands that they do so, so I ask, why does anyone play them?

Did the new updates come with a feature for preventing posting the same messages you already did? I posted the link to the email the mods about unpausing games, but I ended up having to add something to the beginning of the post, to get around a message that told me to make repeat messages.
Doesn't matter that much, but it seems like it could be annoying at times

Can someone explain the draw of the Gunboat?
To me, the entire thrill of this game is in the formation of alliances and the negotiations between players. With that being said, I absolutely don't understand the draw of the Gunboat games--it takes out the best part. If I'm looking for pure strategy, I'll take games like Axis and Allies (despite the "luck factor" or even chess). What am I missing about Gunboat games?
