It's easier to get a gun, than ….
http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/16/health/getting-gun-ease-trnd/index.html

In the wake of the last two mass shootings, I didn't know that I would have a harder time buying a puppy than a gun. There are even more restrictions to join Diplomacy.

Remove the no orders/saved/ready icons
There are 10 minutes to go and still !! is shown next to a country. It's probably going to NMR. This allows countries around it to make moves that they normally wouldn't confident that the sensible supports and moves to SCs won't take place. Which unbalances the game.

If the icons were removed then it is less obvious that an NMR is about to happen. Is there a reason for the icons that I'm missing?

CD vs NMR
I'm looking at my CD's and NMR's, and I noticed that in one game that I had a Civil Disorder, it gave me 12 NMR's, another CD 3 NMR's, and then the rest of my CD's I have 0 NMR's. Can anyone explain how this works and why there's such a huge discrepancy on this? And is this also a "double jeopardy" against my Reliability Rating to count NMR's and CD's from the same game? This part has always confused me. Thanks!

New Zealand has a new Prime Minister
Labour did a full coalition deal with our weird centrist version of UKIP, so that'll be interesting. Greens to make up the numbers with confidence and supply in exchange for policy concessions and ministers outside of cabinet. I for one am cautiously optimistic about the coalition of chaos.

I cherry picked specifically to highlight the problem with your argument. NYC is on track for less than 300 homicides, period, for 2017. Something is working here. And since you say both of our general proposed solutions won't work for Chicago, what will?

And the thing about gun controls is that it doesn't cost all that much money to simply say "you're not allowed to buy X" or "you must wait X days before you can pick up your weapon". The cost is probably in the tens of millions, maybe a hundred. A comprehensive mental health system to identify and treat mental health disorders in the country will cost many billions of dollars.
Octavious (2701 D)
07 Nov 17 UTC
One has to balance that, of course, with an estimate of the costs that can be attributed to not having a system that identifies and treats mental health disorders.
KansasBoyd (25 DX)
07 Nov 17 UTC
Those things you speak of already exist in many states including Illinois.

Which is why several of us have smartly suggested making sure the existing controls are actually working as intended before blindly throwing money at the issue and trying to make a broken procedure a bigger broken procedure.

Liberals just think more and more is better and bigger and bigger government is better instead of just trying to make the existing government better.
KansasBoyd (25 DX)
07 Nov 17 UTC
The shooter in Texas should have been prohibited from buying weapons under the existing system if the Air Force had done their part correctly.
KansasBoyd (25 DX)
07 Nov 17 UTC
But then again I think it was you who suggested that he shouldn’t have gotten dishonorably discharged for fracturing an infants skull though.
I just read this, and think it's very informative.

https://nytimes.com/2017/11/07/world/americas/mass-shootings-us-international.html
KansasBoyd (25 DX)
07 Nov 17 UTC
Informative if you have a pre planned agenda and do research to fit that agenda.
I may have implied that when I said that just because someone is eligible for the harshest punishment doesn't mean they should receive it, but in this situation I believe a dishonorable discharge was merited. But I believe in a system where discretion can be applied, whereas the system you have been arguing for is absolute.

My larger point was that you're trying to push blame onto something that is only a problem for a small minority of these cases. Las Vegas, Orlando, Aurora, Charleston, Sandy Hook. All of those people were able to legally purchase those guns. Enforcement of the rules would've done zero to prevent them.

And yes, they exist in many states, but that is useless unless they exist Nationwide.
Did you even read it? It links to studies done that exclude America and *still* find gun ownership rates to be the highest variable to predict these events. There are good, economic and statistically sound studies mentioned.
Hypothetical for you: If the Supreme Court interpreted the second amendment in an upcoming case to only be the right to form state militias, and not the right for individual gun ownership, would you respect that?

And an additional question - what is your opinion on the NRA's campaign to remove what few gun ownership restrictions that are on the books?
KansasBoyd (25 DX)
07 Nov 17 UTC
Of course I did. That is how I saw the bias.

You can find other studies that will complete contradict this study.
KansasBoyd (25 DX)
07 Nov 17 UTC
I don’t even own a gun or plan on owning a gun.

But I’m all about having the choice to own a gun or not. Not the choice made for me.
Well, if you have any handy I'd be interested in reading them later
(And Octavious, I'm not ignoring you. But yes, a large portion of that cost is associated with establishing such a system in the first place)

For those too lazy to make the tremendous effort to type “number of guns no correlation to mass shootings”

https://www.infowars.com/no-correlation-between-gun-ownership-mass-shootings-murder-rates/

And that's why I wanted you to link it. I didn't want "a" source. I wanted your source.

Which measures something different than mine. Infowars tracks gun ownership rates vs murders. NYT mentions gun ownership rates vs mass shooters, and gun ownership rates vs gun murders. You can't use one to discount the other, because they measure different things.

Both measure gun ownership vs mass shooters, but one compares state to state (Infowars) whereas the other compares country to country. Given the correlation found in the international analysis (when excluding the US) one can reasonably interpret the Infowars data to mean that state laws, ownership rates and boundaries are meaningless in determining mass shooters when freedom of movement and commerce is so easy. One could easily buy a gun in one state and bring it to another. The same cannot be said for countries.
KansasBoyd (25 DX)
07 Nov 17 UTC
It’s a study that clearly states there in no correlation between gun ownership and mass shootings.

That is what you asked for and that is what you got.

You are welcome.
In the United States*

Worldwide, there is a correlation. I'm not saying Infowars data is wrong. Just as a someone with a graduate degree in a statistical field, I can see how this can be used to easily mislead.

How do you balance the two studies then? There is no correlation within the United States, but between countries there is. I believe both analyses are correct, and gave a possible narrative for the reason. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on it.
KansasBoyd (25 DX)
07 Nov 17 UTC
If I wanted to look further, which I don’t, I’m sure there is a study out there that’s shows no correlation worldwide.

My thoughts are that if you have an agenda you wish to achieve, you can engineering your research to achieve that goal.
KansasBoyd (25 DX)
07 Nov 17 UTC
But going back to a previous point you made on the Texas shooter not getting the worst possible discharge from the Air Force, I’m curious on your thoughts on why he shouldn’t have gotten the worst possible discharge for fracturing an infants skull.

You said (I believe it was you) that just because he was eligible for the worst type of discharge doesn’t mean he should have gotten it so I’m interested in hearing more why you think fracturing an infants skull doesn’t warrant a dishonorable discharge.
Just for a refresher, I already answered that on this page

"I may have implied that when I said that just because someone is eligible for the harshest punishment doesn't mean they should receive it, but in this situation I believe a dishonorable discharge was merited."

I'm a bit disappointed though. I didn't try to discredit your source, and was still able to fit your data to my argument. I ask you to do the same and you respond by saying my source is wrong. I think that speaks enough to the strength of each argument.
Thanks for the attempted character assassination as a final kicker though :)
KansasBoyd (25 DX)
07 Nov 17 UTC
Yes you did say that. I skipped through it. My fault.

You were speaking without knowing the facts not saying he didn’t deserve.
KansasBoyd (25 DX)
07 Nov 17 UTC
I didn’t say your source was wrong just engineered to fit an agenda.
Exactly :)

And I wouldn't say I'm engineering it. I'm just putting out a hypothesis that makes sense to me. I'm welcome to challenges on it. Because I want to solve the problem, and everything we can rule out as not being the problem is just as important as finding the actual source of the issue itself
JamesYanik (548 D)

I think this is something that can slightly reconcile this argument

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/07/27/new-evidence-confirms-what-gun-rights-advocates-have-been-saying-for-a-long-time-about-crime/?utm_term=.cf22dfee116b

the problem isn't that legal owners are using guns at massive rates, but that many guns that are stolen from legal gunners contribute largely to the problem.

so we need to really focus on making sure that gun owners are responsible with their guns, and that'd solve quite a bit of the problem for gun murders. I refer back to making sure people get proper training, and secure their guns.

Refugees.. Does Uganda treat refugees better than many wealthy Nations ?
More refugees from South Sudan entered Uganda in the last 12 months than entered Europe. Uganda allows them to enter, to work, gives many a small plot of land to farm. To appease locals in regional areas where refugees settle the Government allocates 30% of aid to local communities. My own Nation, Australia, a relatively wealthy nation treats some refugees well, but others with harsh treatment, incarceration in detention camps.
