Commander, while I agree that Interstellar is better based on actual science and is an amazing movie; it did not change the game like The Matrix. The idea that science fiction is better if it employs valid science is a valid opinion but I very much enjoy the fiction aspect to get a glimpse into the insanity of the writers and directors. I also contend that The Matrix was superior because the story required multiple viewings if you wanted to really see how the story fit together.

Finding Nemo also employed valid science. Still not better than the Matrix.

But I get the point about the science not being a determining factor.

Don't get me wrong, Nemo was awesome, but no.

Finding Nemo might actually be a better movie than The Matrix, just saying.

Interstellar, meanwhile, was a meh film. Very overrated. Christopher Nolan post-Inception was a massive downturn in quality. The Matrix has interesting themes and is consistent in its quality from beginning to end, and some really cool action near the end of the film and breathtaking set pieces throughout. And easily on of the best Keanu Reeves performances out there.

Awfully strange that our only Pixar film is Monsters Inc.

I am hearing the arguments and I feel like I'm doing a disservice either way here. It's like choosing which of my two kids to eat. Never easy.

Interstellar is by no means a masterpiece, but I think The Matrix is really misremembered as a great movie. It has shiny, fun set pieces, and a unique premise that we all remember fondly but the actual content is really shallow.

It's basically an everyday thriller with a different setting. The first half of the movie is extremely strong, but by the end, its just a typical action film (masquerading as a thoughtful sci-fi film) with average acting, and average writing.

The action in the original Matrix is better than the typical action film.

Interstellar has a boring start, a decent middle, and a very poor ending that tries too hard at being smarter than the audience.

Interstellar biggest trip is the Matt Damon segment.

Its true that the Matrix does not try to be smarter than the audience. Instead, it introduces interesting ideas and themes, and then halfway through throws those out the window and devolves into a generic shoot 'em up film. With subpar acting all around

The only difference between the well received first Matrix, and the poorly received sequels is that the setting of the first was original. (Plus it had a strong first half). Once you get past that, you realize they are all pretty much the same bad movie.

They are very distinct portions, but the first and second halves of the film are executed very well for what they intend to be.
