How does one report a dubious competitor?
I'm in a game where one player is making moves that help another player, after that player attacked him from the first move. It may not be outright cheating, but it is certainly against the spirit of the rules. I would like an administrator to look into it.

To Cathlics - Resigning as Voice of God?
OK...I thought it was, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me..." and the Pope, who --- isn't he like the Voice of God on earth?? -- is too tired to go on? Errr...it isn't about his strength...it's supposed to be about Christ's strength, isn't it? How disappointing is this to Catholics?

What new features would you like to see on WebDip?
Think of this as a wishlist. Please be constructive and positive. I think it would be really good if we can come up with a solid list of 6-10 things that we can slowly work on to improve the site.

Simple suggestion: In gunboat games (ie, no messaging), when a global announcement is made by a mod (usually for the removal of a player), PLEASE allow us to clear the "new message" alert by visiting the message page? At present, I'm in a 10-day-phase gunboat game where we had a multi removed about a month ago, and yet every time I log in I am greeted with the "new message!" icon next to the name of that game. This should be the easiest fix on the list, and would save an untold amount of annoyance. Thanks.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

On vdip the flag is cleared when you go to the Messages link.

Alternatively, I submitted a code change that would show the global tab in gunboat games, but in read only mode while the game is running and then opening up afterwards. And also adds a Notes tab. But I'll have to recode it to the new version of webdip when I get a chance and resubmit.

M0ar features!!1!

-the ability to set the phase length differently for builds/retreats vs. diplomacy phases. This is in line with the original rules that dont allow communcation during these lhases so it does do something to preserve the spirit of the game

-shiny trophies in people's profiles for winning tournaments.
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Feb 13 UTC
Along with Yonni's phase length variance, we should add in a block to posting private chat (but keep public open) during those phases, much like it would happen around the board game where people are bounce to chat as the players put in their disbands, builds or retreats.

I play like that with my friends on PBEM but never really understood why. In a FtF game or PBM it makes sense because of time restrictions. Online it seems a bit unnecessary but, yes, it'd be nice or people who want to follow the original rules to the letter.
josunice (3702 D(S))

@ Yonni - [shorter phase length for builds/retreats] -- as much as it annoys when someone near the end is stringing out a game by delaying readying these phases, it creates too much uncertainty if a user expecting a certain length phase needs to keep in mind a changing schedule. It would be a great first step, as previously suggested, to automatically ready a disband when there is no option available.

@Draugnar - [no private chat during builds/retreats] -- +1 to that...

What would have the single greatest positive impact across the system? I vote for the suggestion for a pre-CD phase - if a power will CD, the seat is vacated and the turn is reset for one turn length. Couple that with a discounted buy-in (say first three centers are free), and a vast majority of games, even near the end, would be improved...

I want a conference room, where subsets of powers can sit together and play Eurozone or Med-Union. At least in FtF, we make heavy use of such regional arrangements
jimgov (219 D(B))
05 Feb 13 UTC
This may either be impossible or very easy, but it would be nice if people who CD a certain number of times in a certain time period either cannot join games or can't join games where you are anonymous. That way, you can make an informed decision as to who you play with.

How about putting the donations button on every page. This whole site is fantastic and there is no reason why this little button couldn't be out there to just remind us all to help defer the costs. The only place where I can find it is under FAQs.

I'd like to see plane units added to classic
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Feb 13 UTC
That would be a variant and unrealistic for 1901. The Wright brothers didn't do Kitty Hawk until 1903 and even Gustave Whitehead's earliest reported flights supposedly occurred in 1901 and 1902. It would be amazing to see fighters and bombers of any sort flying before the first experimental aircraft managed to sustain flight for even a few hundred yards.
X3n0n (216 D)
06 Feb 13 UTC
@Draugnar: one could start a variant 1914 - by then air power became important on the battle fields ;)

and we need submarines, too. They already existed as real fighting units in 1900 and should be able to occupy sea spaces together with fleets.
SYnapse (0 DX)
06 Feb 13 UTC
You could just play Hearts of Iron, if you want lots of different units lol.

For example then you need motorised infantry, artillery, what about paratroops? And you can't have 1 type of plane, you need at least bombers and fighters. If you're gonna put subs you might as well have carriers too.

Get rid of "you are posting too frequently"

A feature to give me (and maybe a few select others) a +2 button.

Gunboat flagged messages for CDs

When scrolling through forum or game lists, always start at the top instead of defaulting to whichever arrow was clicked last, either at the top or bottom of a thread. Makes browsing annoying.

Tell people to shut up about vDip. Or, better yet, link the two sites.

Extend phase button.

PM notices.

A dedicated points text shortcut so forum posts don't have misplaced D circles. Maybe something like (D) is the only way to post the points icon?

For every new player to register, jmo has to visit their home personally to verify they are not a multi.

Reliability rating is flawed. One bad game on vDip and you can never recover, even for a veteran player, because the weighting system for missed phases emphasizes the first few missed phases too much. If you choose to implement such a feature, make it easier for players to increase their RR.

No double posting when refreshing on in-game chat.

Sticky threads that stay on the front page.

Auto-cancel gunboats with two or more CDs.

Draugnar (0 DX)

"Reliability rating is flawed. One bad game on vDip and you can never recover,"

Unles RR has been overhauled since November, that is a bullshit statement. I missed the opening year of a game and CDed because my wife ended up in the hospital at Thanksgiving. Two CD take overs later and I'm back up to 98%+ RR. It was easy to turn around the earliest possible CD in a game.
chluke (12292 D(G))
06 Feb 13 UTC
How about Higher Minimum Points (200 vs. 100) for players who complete 5 games with 0 resignations, or maintain 95%+ reliability for games beyond 5. (It's difficult getting out of the <100pt game newbie trench with all the CD's, NMR's, "banned" players, and bizarre play -- especially with limited skills like mine. lol)
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
10 Feb 13 UTC
I have another idea.

How about a "Minimum points for entry" game. I am relatively more experienced than all of the 100 D new guys out there, but I always end up in games with them since I rarely bet more than 20 or 30 D on a game. What about an option in which the creator of the game could set a minimum number of points for admittance to the game, so that way you could have a game with a buy-in with 10 or 20 D but you would only have experienced players by setting the minimum points at 101 D.
chluke (12292 D(G))
10 Feb 13 UTC
I second Gunfighter's Minimum Points Entry, or better yet a "Minimum GR Rating". Combined with a miminum "reliability" rating, it could greatly improve quality of games.

Chess sites have similar invitation settings. It could also cut down on one of the reasons I expect some higher quality players have to set up password protected games, and send out personal invitations.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
10 Feb 13 UTC
I would rather a minimum GR or RR. Could also go with some experience factor tied into RR (someone new doesn't have 100 RR, they have no RR). Minimum points could be problematic - plenty of the best players are below 100 D.
chluke (12292 D(G))
10 Feb 13 UTC
BIG second on @josunice's idea automatically extending Spring or Fall 01 by one cycle for a first year CD, forcing player out of game, and offering discounted CD for new player.

If you want to take it further, ANY back-to-back CD in any year (but only one CD in first year) could kick player out, extend phase by one cycle, and give chance for discounted buy-in for replacement player

>I vote for the suggestion for a pre-CD phase - if a power will CD, the seat is vacated and the turn is reset for one turn length. Couple that with a discounted buy-in (say first three centers are free), and a vast majority of games, even near the end, would be improved...

Wrestling Dropped from Olympic Games.

I don't understand how canoeing, handball, badminton, taekwondo, and table tennis can survive as "core sports", but wrestling, that most traditional of Olympic sports, gets placed on par with wakeboarding, roller sports, and squash.
