We have a player in our game who is not going to be able to continue because he is too busy with work and just doesn't have time to commit to playing well.

Is there a way for the mods to substitute another account for his, or should we just have someone sit on his account for the remainder of the game?

You get together with six friends to play Diplomacy when a maniac storms into the room with an AK-47. He tells you that he is going to put the seven of you in a line all facing forward. i.e. the first person cannot see the others, the second person in line can only see the first person, etc..., the last person can see the other six people. Then on each persons head he will put either a red hat or a white hat. Each person cannot see their own hat and can only see the hats of the people in front of them. Each person, in any order, can guess the color of their own hat. If a person guessing incorrectly, that person will be shot immediately. The maniac then allows you to discuss the situation privately so that you may determine the order in which people will stand.

Find a solution to minimize the number of deaths that involves only each person stating whether they think they have a red hat or a white hat. No fighting the maniac.

Hopefully I didn't botch that up at all this late at night.

@Alderian- Also really, really like that one. Actually, the two most recently proposed riddles (or at least variations of them) were both ones I used in the first lesson of this series of lectures I did for a local math team back home.

sorry semack but it is one question to each god.
FreeThing (507 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
@Alderian - 7th in line should guess using the colour of the person in front's hat (50% chance of death). 6th in line then knows the colour of their hat. If the person ahead of them has the same colour they should say it, if not then they should keep quiet. If the 5th person does not hear a the 6th person, they should guess the other colour. After the 5th person has guessed, then the 6th person should look at the 4th person's hat and either say the colour if it is the same or say nothing. And so on... 50% chance of one death.

Diplomat: That's not true! The original riddle states explicitly that "It could be that some god gets asked more than one question (and hence that some god is not asked any question at all)." So I guess semacks solution is at least partly correct, if not completly!
@Diplomat33: I've sent you a pm with the original riddle as well as the wikipedia article you were referring to earlier ...

A man and woman are traveling with their two sons and two daughters. A policeman and a thief are traveling with them. As they are walking along the road the come to a river. In the river is a raft. The raft is the only way across the river and it can only hold 2 people at a time. Only the man, woman, or policeman can operate the raft.

If the thief is left with any other people and without the policeman (on either side of the river or on the raft) he will kill them.
The man can only be with his daughters if the woman is present and the woman can only be with her sons if the man is present (I guess they have some kind of weird custody agreement...)

How many steps does it take to get them all to the other side of the river and what are the steps?
patizcool (100 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
8.5 trips (to the other side of the river and back is 1)

Policeman brings thief over, returns
Policeman brings son over, returns with thief
Dad brings son over, returns
Mom brings dad over, returns
Policeman brings thief over, dad returns
Mom brings dad over, returns
Mom brings daughter over, policeman returns with thief
policeman brings daughter over, returns
policeman brings thief over

Assuming I'm correct, here you go:

A rich family lives in a round house, when the parents came back for their dinner date their baby was dead. The daughter said she was playing with her dolls, the son said he was playing outside in the garden, the maid said she was dusting corners, and the butler said he was baking pies who killed the baby?

This is an old anishinabek riddle, it loses something in translation but here goes

I solidly plant my feet
And stretch my arms up wide
To receive the gift
So that I may gift you, also
And may you return it for me again
So that I may always receive

The point is to decipher all the givers/receivers and what is being given
just to illustrate why the translation is difficult below

gift- bagidinigan+an
Creator's Gift- manidoo omiigiwewin+an
gift- miigiwewin+an
gift- [mutual] miinidiwin+an
gift- miinigoowiziwin+an
gift- (received) miinigowin+an
gift- miinigoziwin+an
gift- miiniwewin+an

@Sic - Another obvious one. The tree plants it's feet, sprreads it's arms, and receives sunlight so that it can give us oxygen which we convert to carbon dioxide, part of the process. So obvious and simple.

Here is a riddle. The game!
Alderian (2425 D(S))
06 Dec 11 UTC
@FreeThing, hrmm, that's a different solution than the one I know, but appears to work. Good job!

I was doing it from memory so wasn't sure whether the order of stating mattered. So let's now say that they must state the color of their hats from back to front rather than in any order.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Dec 11 UTC
Well, "old" is a relative term. :-)
Alderian (2425 D(S))
06 Dec 11 UTC
@FreeThing, the answer I was familiar with is that everyone agrees that the person in the back will say red if he sees an even number of red hats in front of him and otherwise say white. He has a 50% chance of living. But the next person in front of him now knows the color of his hat based on whether he also sees an even or odd number of red hats and therefore whether his own is red or white. And so on down the line.

The real question is which of the diplomacy players is at the back of the line and only has a 50/50 shot of surviving. I'd guess Turkey.

I solidly plant my feet- tree
And strech my arms up wide- branches/leaves
to receive the gift- sunlight/God/heavenly light
So that I may gift you, also- seeds into the earth
And may you return it to me again- the earth's soil is renewed with nutrients
So that I may always receive- nutrients for roots to continue growing

Just a guess

Alive as you, but without breath,
As cold in my life, as in my death
Never I thirst, but always I drink,
Dressed in mail, but never a clink.

What am I?
"Alive as you, but without breath,
As cold in my life, as in my death
Never I thirst, but always I drink,
Dressed in mail, but never a clink."

Something that is:
(a) unable to breathe;
(b) unable to perform homeostasis;
(c) constantly absorbing liquids;
(d) armored to some description, but the armor makes no sound; presumably the armored segment(s) do not move

A tree?
