This would be a very risky and unlikely move for someone who is rich and well connected (the rich are always well connected - as he must have been to negotiate such a thing - against the prevailing desire of both the leadership and the general populace).

If you don't believe in God you have nothing to fear from religion because there is no judgement day.
You can completely dismiss all aspects of religion and go on your merry way.
The motivations for attacks on religious beliefs come from a lack of confidence the attackers has in their own rejection of religion.
