Just a misunderstood dictator
Kadhafi is truly a moral giant, vilified by the west only because of his anti-west policies! Look he wants to spare his people from western control!

It's been 3 years, and still Germany will not accept offers for a cease-fire in this long war. All the other sovereign nations have ratified the pledge and are supporting each other. When will Germany accept that he cannot break the combined will of Europe? gameID=63769

This Time On Philosophy Weekly--Grouped Stars or Dividing Stripes: Nationalism vs. Global
Now, this one I DEFINITELY want, if possible, folks from other nations outside the US to contribute to, as I'd be keen to hear what someone might have to say who actually IS part of a greater-than-a-nation-union, such as the EU, but it's a pretty simple question:
Politically AND Ideologically, which is preferable--Nationalism or Globalization/Unions, and which do you believe is the "future" politically?

SoW Summer 2011
We are looking for people to sign up for this summer's School of War. TA's, professors and students are welcome!

I have contacted vordemu to take the spot in game 1, and I did it while he's online, so I don't know what is holding it up. Do the other TA's and professors agree that a 2 week pause is too much? I just feel that the game would get lost in that time period. So game 1 is being held up by Vordemu, and game 2 by Cachimbo.

BenGuin is already in game 2.

Perhaps you may a new rundown of players (keep the games) but w/ the GR of July now. Would help out for TA's/Profs on what to expect their player to know.

Do we have a thread for it yet?

Apologies for the delay. I wasn't actually on when you sent it, I had just left my computer on(it doesn't automatically go to sleep), and I didn't check my PMs when I came back, just finished orders for a couple games and logged off(a mistake on my part). Also, I have a question about EOGs. Never having written one before, do you write the EOG as you're actually playing the game or is it a posthumous sort of thing where you try to express what you were feeling at the time?

Game 2 has begun.

Game ID: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=63029
Well, vordemu, you can actually write EOG's either way. Some people jot a few things down as they play, while others write it once they're finished. I usually wait until the end to write mine, but then it takes me about 2 hours to write it (because I write long ones) and going back through the game and my press. And you do it to explain your actions, plans, and what you were thinking.

07 Jul 11 UTC
Considering that these are longer phase games and that you will be basing your decision not only on your press but on the advice of your TA who will be pm'ing you, I would advise you to write your EOG as you play, otherwise it might take a while to sort through all of your messages afterwards.

Are they pausing for some reason or not?
Cachimbo (1181 D)
07 Jul 11 UTC
Yeah, we're pausing because I'm leaving until the 15th and another player is leaving for that weekend (14th to 17th I think).

Sorry for slowing things down.

So Smiley, do you know who you'll be TAing? I've got Turkey and it was on your list.
☺ (1304 D)
07 Jul 11 UTC
I've got Italy.

So should we go ahead and send opening advice to our students? I'm inclined to say no, as I don't think communication should be allowed in a pause.

I sent mine a message saying hi, but didn't actually give any advice.
Riphen (198 D)
07 Jul 11 UTC
I think we need to pause if my TA does not show up in Game 1 unless some one steps up. I am Russia!!
Cachimbo (1181 D)
07 Jul 11 UTC
@Smiley: given that this is SoW, I see no reasons why there should not be talk during the pause. In my opinion (and the amounts of literature on the subject seem to indicate that my opinion is right), opening moves can give rise to many theories and possible discussions. Having more time to go around it might be useful to some players who are not quite sure what they are doing (and what message they are sending) with their opening moves.
☺ (1304 D)
07 Jul 11 UTC
Well, yes, it would be, but it would be disadvantages for those players that won't be around - it's an unfair advantage...
Cachimbo (1181 D)
07 Jul 11 UTC
Pfff! I'm the one who's away for the most part!!! I don't mind my opponents getting some time to prep!!!

That being said: if ever I do have internet where I'm going, I'll warn you all ASAP so that we can continue with the game.
Yonni (136 D(S))
07 Jul 11 UTC
I'm the other one that will be gone for a bit and I'm completely OK with people having discussions while I'm gone. Ironically, Cachimbo and I won't be overlapping before the unpause and we're playing as R/T. There is still time after the unpause anyways so talking to the TAs before could be helpful.

Oh! And in an effort not to overload our friendly organizer, could someone tell me who the TA is for Turkey/Game 2?
Yonni (136 D(S))

And the TAing begins...

But, really, at what point is a word used enough in one way that it just takes on a new meaning?

Death with Honor
In order to promote good playing behavior, I'd like to introduce the concept of "Death with Honor", which I suggest to be included as a tie-breaker in tournaments just after the number of wins. Definition follows:

Your 2012 Presidential Pick
I know it is a little early, but I am curious. If the American presidential election were tomorrow, who would you vote for and why? You can pick Republicans who have not announced their candidacy yet. You can also pick a Democrat that you would pick over Obama.

I recently won gameID=61459 and I'm confused by the points distribution. Shouldn't the distribution be 20/10/1 scaled up to 135/68/7 and not 131/73/8?

Pondering the idea of writing some fan-fic for some epic games here. Does anyone have suggestions for games with lots of drama, twists, climax, etc? Would the players involved be willing to give interviews for the inside stories?

Why are there so few quality World Dip games here?
I've played hundreds of games, and on this site my win\draw ratio is quite strong, as it generally tends to be. I consider myself to be a strong player, not an expert, but quite skilled.

However, I am noticing that in the World Dip variant, the talent pool seems to be rather shallow...why is this?

PPSC vs. WTA
What are your thoughts? After a couple of couple of games under my belt I'm beginning to grow quite irritated at PPSC. It always seems to dwindle off into one less well doing player helping another better doing player to a solo for a fair share of points. More under the cut.

After the private university furore, Dawkins is in trouble again
Apparently one of our elders and betters has made a somewhat questionable analogy between a man chewing gum and the unwelcomed propositioning of a woman at an atheist conference. I am sure that this was eminantly logical but I am just struggling to see how!
