An All-Male Discussion on Feminism, "Feminism," and Atheism...This Should Be Fun...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKKQdJR7F_I Frankly, I think that's a fair point--these people do NOT represent a very good side of either feminism or atheism, in my opinion...there's Feminism, and then there's "Feminism" or, as it might otherwise be put, "Demanding that everyone agree with your views full stop or else libeling them." Real feminism and real atheism is, I think, being somewhat "poisoned" by this increasingly-smug, self-assured band of PC Police.

CD or hold everything?
I'm in a gunboat at the moment where one of the players - who has no shot at winning anymore - has decided to hold every turn giving SCs to the largest player, in effect throwing the game. I'd prefer if he would just CD so we can get somebody else. Are there any (un)written good practices?

they aren't popular opinion, they're polls taken from various research institutions. One of them, for instance, was done by a bipartisan commitee of political historians drawn from all ends of the political spectrum.

You'd have to look at them individually to see how they did it, but in the absence of something better, I think it's a fine metric for us.
semck83 (229 D(B))
17 Jan 13 UTC
Getting your tenses wrong, YJ. Fasces didn't say that everybody "ranks" RR in the top 3. He said everybody "ranked" RR in the top 3 except ghug. He is correct. So he's also correct that it's not possible RR could end up at #8 if you aggregated correctly. Try again.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
17 Jan 13 UTC
semck. To your first, OK, I get it now. I thought he was talking about the polls on the link I sent.

To the second, I didn't calculate the aggregate, it was done on the link provided. Lacking anything comparable that's easily available I'm using it as "truth" against which our scores can be compared.

And don't be so fucking condescending :)
ghug (5068 D(B))
17 Jan 13 UTC
YJ, how are you calculating scores? Obviously I'm more right than you, but I'm curious by how much.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
17 Jan 13 UTC
I already said.

Just take your the absolute value of the difference between your score and the aggregate score for each president. So you score "0" for FDR cuz you hit it spot on, but you loose 6 for overrating Clinton, etc.
ghug (5068 D(B))
17 Jan 13 UTC
Alright
1. FDR (0)
2. Wilson (0)
3. Clinton (6)
4. Eisenhower (0)
5. Truman (2)
6. Kennedy (1)
7. Coolidge (7) (Why the hell did I put him that high? Coolidge sucked)
8. Reagan (0)
9. Nixon (6)
10. Obama (3)
11. George H. W. Bush (1)
12. Johnson (6)
13. Carter (1)
14. Ford (3)
15. Bush (1)
16. Harding (1)
17. Hoover (4)

42 Total

I do have issues with this list, as people like Clinton and Nixon would really be rated higher if we weren't considering the fact that they're terrible people.
semck83 (229 D(B))
17 Jan 13 UTC
Oh. So we're just going with a random website? Bleah. That just means ghug is the least original thinker.

@Yellowjacket: I ommitted the polls that I didn't trust the source, as well as the really old polls. I also admitted the 2010 Sienna one because it rated obama based on the first 13 months of his presidency, which is hell of an unreliable rating.

Based on that here was the aggregates:
1 Franklin D. Roosevelt
2 Harry S. Truman
3 Dwight D. Eisenhower
3 Ronald Reagan
5 Woodrow Wilson
6 John F. Kennedy
7 Lyndon B. Johnson
8 Bill Clinton
9 George H. W. Bush
10 Gerald Ford
11 Calvin Coolidge
12 Jimmy Carter
13 Richard Nixon
14 George W. Bush
15 Herbert Hoover
16 Warren G. Harding
ghug (5068 D(B))
17 Jan 13 UTC
Fasces, that seems like some really biased poll removal.
Fasces349 (0 DX)
17 Jan 13 UTC
The fact that I didn't include Harding, Coolidge or Wilson in my list here is the updated to test my rating score or whatever YJ wants to call it:
1 Franklin D. Roosevelt
2 Harry S. Truman
3 Dwight D. Eisenhower
3 Ronald Reagan
5 John F. Kennedy
6 Lyndon B. Johnson
7 Bill Clinton
8 George H. W. Bush
9 Gerald Ford
10 Jimmy Carter
11 Richard Nixon
12 George W. Bush
13 Herbert Hoover

My ratings:
1 Ike (2)
2 Ron (1)
3 Bill (4)
4 JFK (1)
5 Harry (3)
6 Dick (5)
7 Ford (2)
8 FDR (7)
9 HW (1)
10 Johnson (4)
11 W (1)
12 Hoover (1)
13 Carter (3)

For a total of 35. Of course my list is 3 presidents shorter the yours so its easier to get a low number.
Fasces349 (0 DX)
17 Jan 13 UTC
"Fasces, that seems like some really biased poll removal."
On what grounds? I removed the old ones because they omitted all the new presidents, I omitted the ones that judged presidents midterm, and I omitted one other for a reason I forget. :D
Fasces349 (0 DX)
17 Jan 13 UTC
Reomitting ones that judged Presidents midterm:
The 2000 WSJ and 2008 Time were no omitted despite including a midterm president because in both cases the survey was done during the Presidents final year in office, rather then just at the end of his first year.
ghug (5068 D(B))
17 Jan 13 UTC
I just mean that, without looking at the specific polls that were removed, it seems to me that your removal of polls make the aggregate consensus align much more closely with your ratings (just tallying up your thirteen against the original aggregate, your score is 47). I also still don't like your justifications for your omissions of several of them.
Sbyvl36 (439 D)
17 Jan 13 UTC
Why do you people love FDR so much? Under him, the depression lasted 11 years, and not only that, but he did pretty much the same thing as Hoover, only worse. Coolidge gets the top slot because he was a Capitalist, and didn't interfere in buisness.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
17 Jan 13 UTC
His tenure happened to coincide with an international conflict known among historians as World War II. You'll wanna look into this event for your analyses.

9 Gerald Ford (0)
10 Jimmy Carter (0)
11 Richard Nixon (1)
12 George W. Bush (1)
13 Herbert Hoover (2)

A total of 10 D and over half the presidents being identically placed. In fact if we omit two presidents on this list, they receive a score of 0...

I'm not even going to bother assembling a list. I'm a New-Deal-loving, Great-Society-pushing, Carter-defending Liberal who couldn't get unbiased if I wanted to (which I'm not sure I do).

I will, however, point out the idiocy of ranking Obama. It's like trying to rate Nixon's presidency as of 1972, or Clinton's in 1996.

That said new deal, great society and Carter all sucked.

I tend to think about these things in the spirit of Zhou Enlai. When Zhou was asked, ca. 1950, by a French reporter what his thoughts about the effect of the French Revolution were, he responded that it was too soon to tell. I don't think we can fully assess the legacy of the Civil War yet. Trying to decide about Bush the Lesser's legacy seems to me to be hopelessly premature.
