When are we up to unpausing? I'm curious to see the way it turns out.

Title is pretty self explanatory. Musical taste can say a lot about someone.

@Akroma: No, please don't take offence. I sorry I said you were weird.

As someone who loves music, I'm genuinely interested in what would make a person say they have no interest in music whatsoever.
Akroma (967 D)

yes, but if I think about it, I don't want the answer to be discussed on the forum.

@Akroma - I promise, for my part, to not make fun of you for it.

Being a musician, I just can't conceive of a world without sound that I find pleasing to the ear. Whether it be a crackling fire with some form of classical music in the background (usually Mozart for me) or a drive in the rain through the city at night with some smooth jazz playing, or an open air run through the country with the top down and some classic and/or hard rock playing, music provides the soundtrack to my life.

So it would be interesting to hear another perspective on it.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)

@Draugnar: Which are your favourite hard rock bands?
Akroma (967 D)
13 Jul 09 UTC
as I said, private setting only
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Jul 09 UTC
@Jamie - mostly of a classic hard rock or alt rock nature: Aerosmith, Rush, Scorpions, Metallica, Nickleback (Silver Side Up in particular), Evanescence, Staind, Puddle of Mud, Garbage, and Linkin Park (more alt than rock).
Draugnar (0 DX)

@Akroma - my email is in my profile. Your game where you are France, Germany just made a move so he isn't gonna CD after all. I'd drop you a line, but you remail isn't in your profile. Go ahead and drop me a note so we can discuss. I respect your desire for privacy and promise not to be a dick and not to reports anything you say here. I am truly interested in your perspective.

no way germany just made a move. He hasn't ben logged in since friday, and the round will be over in less than 24 hours.
he is totaly going CD this turn

Feel free to email me too Akroma, I'm just as interested in your comments as Draug, and we can't _both_ takeover the same CD in your game.

@Draug: Linkin Park, Nickleback, Staind and Puddle of Mudd all stink, but the first four bands you mention rule.
Akroma (967 D)

no, the point is to find a replacement for the CD before it even happens, and not to tell it to as many people as possible.

I hate games with CDs

Oh Akroma, crafty way to get someone to immediately take over a CD I suppose. =P

"If you think about it is kind of weird that we like music so much."

Spyman, we're like the same person. I think about this ALL the time. It's one of the most intriguing facets of humanity for me. Why on Earth should we be attracted to music in such a way that it's a multi-billion dollar industry, and in a way that I can't help but tap my foot to a good song, at the very least.

Classically, it's seen as a sort of peacock's tail, in that it shows a genuine investment of the brains creative resources in a field that is not classically seen as "productive" (ie. conducive to survival) and broadcasts brain fitness to the opposite sex. This is usually backed up by anecdotal evidence that artists and musicians have more sex than say, engineers.

Steven Pinker chalks it up to numerous by-products. It's the sort of cheesecake of language and movement, in that it's a superstimuli of the small stimuli that give us pleasure. He reckons that rhythm is important for your brain's inner sense of timing and co-ordinating movements, whether in playing an instrument or dancing to the music. He reckons that the sounds that we like represent superstimuli of spoken word and perhaps more ancient and emotional vocalizations.

I wonder if people are going to get on my case for trying to apply science to music, as if it somehow diminishes the appreciation for musical beauty.

I, for one, appreciate the application of science to anything and everything.

Chrispminis I am going to make up an answer to this - I haven't research this at all but a few things come to mind.
1. We can discern differences in pitch and timing.
2. We have an inate tendancy to perceive patterns.
3.We think often think in analogies. (Such as our ability to make metaphors). So things may represent something they are not.
4. We communicate with each other. Not just in a literal sense either - we are incredibly about perceptive about other humans emotional states (mirror neurons?)
Put this altogether and we heare combinations of sounds, perceive defintie patterns, apply some kind of anagolous thinking, then communicate these too each other.
One more thing the ability to do all of these things have a variety of benefits for us - not just music creation (of course). The ability to demonstrate skill at activities such as music is attractive to the oppostie sex as it shows that a whole range of mental facalities are working well.

yeah chrispminis, but you on the other hand know my explanation already, and why I dislike it being discussed on the forum

Unpause a game please
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=11990

Austria was banned for some reason, and the game went into pause. Austria has since been taken over, which is fine - but England hasn't turned up since friday (and thus hasn't voted). We have 36 hour phases, so if a mod could unpause, they will still have an entire 36 hours more from that point to join in again.

Could someone please unpause this game? It was first paused due to a multi-accounter. And while the multi-accounter's place has since been replaced, Italy has not logged in since Thursday.
