Unpause a game please
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=11990

Austria was banned for some reason, and the game went into pause. Austria has since been taken over, which is fine - but England hasn't turned up since friday (and thus hasn't voted). We have 36 hour phases, so if a mod could unpause, they will still have an entire 36 hours more from that point to join in again.

Unpause request
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=12053
Could someone please unpause this game? It was first paused due to a multi-accounter. And while the multi-accounter's place has since been replaced, Italy has not logged in since Thursday.

Firewall Blockage
My work finally blocked my access to this site using [email protected] will put a damper on my ability to communicate.
Darwyn (1601 D)

Any not so obvious ways of getting around this?

Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what did you do?
Alderian (2425 D(S))

If you normally get here via phpdiplomacy.net you could try www.phpdiplomacy.net or vice versa. I don't know much about getting around firewall rules so sorry I can't offer more advice than that. I know there are websites you can go through that act as proxies but you'd think those would get blocked too if they knew what they were doing.

amonkeyperson was banned by his parents a while back and he got a lot of answers. Some of them we half hearted because of the nature of the ban, but I'm sure everyone would love to circumvent authority with you.

Have you tried a proxy?
Centurian (3257 D)

webdiplomacy.net will also take you to this site. You can try that...
Darwyn (1601 D)
14 Jul 09 UTC
good to know Centurian, that may work...I'll try it tomorrow. but if it works, what's the best way to keep it relatively unnoticed by the IT guys? :)
WhiteSammy (132 D)
14 Jul 09 UTC
not going....that can go unnoticed very easily
amonkeyperson (100 D)
14 Jul 09 UTC
Yea I got blocked from phpdip. So I just used webdiplomacy.net as an alternative. But I don't know how to make it go unnoticed by the IT guys. If you ever get blocked from webdiplomacy, you can use a proxy site. A proxy site wont let you scroll through the years on the map, and it wont let you update your orders. So you can use a proxy site to communicate with other countries. Then when you get home, you can put in your orders.

i suggest you convince your boss that playing games in work can relieve boredom when your work isn't too busy, keeping you alert.
Diplomacy sharpens you negotiating skills, and makes you used to looking at both the big picture and the fine details of tactical moves.

And the playing games helps relax and releive stress making you more productive at your job.

This is the social engineering prespective. :)
amonkeyperson (100 D)

Yea, time to put your diplomatic skills to the test. Convince your boss to unblock the site.
fortknox (2059 D)
14 Jul 09 UTC
going unnoticed is rough... you have to hide it under like a google cache (which wouldn't work with a game you want updates realtime) or something...
It depends on the size of your company... if there are 500 employees, all browsing the web, you don't have much to worry about, because the IT guys are just looking at filters (they see 'gaming site' instead of 'phpdip'), so you can switch to something like webdiplomacy... but if it is small, then you might be up a creek.

But don't lose your job over a game, dude.

I _AM_ The IT guy who blocks websites.

If your company is using real softawre to block, like websense, then it's going to be difficult, and if they have competent security guys, ti could get you fired.

You could request that "Games" be opened for lunchtime, or for an hour a day quota, to give you a chance to check on your games. We give everyone 1 hour a day to do things like games, sports and message boards.

Darwyn,

You have played in 47 games as of this post and you have won 8 of them. This speaks of some damn good diplomacy on your part.

Houw about you make friends with the IT guy and have him give you access to the site. Even better, let it be his idea.

And then? When you have all the access you need? Sleep with his wife!

Okay, maybe not that last part. Sorry about that. Got kind of carried away with the stabbing - it doesn't have to happen in real life.
jbalcorn (429 D)
14 Jul 09 UTC
You getting around filters to play diplomacy = you taking a chance on getting dinged on your review for playing on company time.

IT guy opening filters to allow you to play diplomacy = IT guy getting fired.

It doesn't balance out, unless you allow the IT guy to sleep with YOUR wife. And she better be good.
Darwyn (1601 D)

LOL...thanks for the tips guys! I definitely won't push this far enough to get me fired...I like to play but I'm not stupid.

I haven't checked webdiplomacy.net at work yet because I didn't want to raise any flags so soon after being blocked. Is webdiplomacy.com any better for not raising flags with the IT guys?

We are a somewhat small company and I know the sole IT guy, he's a decent guy who I'm sure is just doing his job. I have yet to even mention it to him at all though. Oh and a proxy won't work because those sites are blocked.

Normally, I have little trouble accessing most any site. But I'm sure the time accumulation on this site was what prompted the block. The IT guy may have been doing me a favor actually.

We don't own webdiplomacy.com, just .net (like phpdiplomacy).

My only advice is as others have said that you should probably just talk to the IT guy about it. If you start looking for workarounds and make this a you vs him thing it won't end well

Btw I briefly worked in a large office, wrote an automated software inventory system, and boy there were a huge amount of games installed. Receptionist had dozens of card games, someone even had Fable and Spiderman II installed. :-|

Darwyn: Get an iPhone or Blackberry and access phpdiplomacy from that (using the 3g network). If that doesn't work, you could set up your own cgi proxy through your home computer and access via that, if you have an IP that only changes when your modem resets. With most cable/DSL providers, that's what you'll have.

And jbalcorn, I remember getting through WebBlocker or whatever it is in high school whenever I wanted to. I can't imagine it's gotten much better in a year and a half. They really suck at blocking new proxies in a timely manner.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
15 Jul 09 UTC
But if he is working for a small company then the IT guy wouldn't have too hard of a time seeing new traffic to a new site. Best to just find out if it would be okay as long as you are careful about the total amount of time so it can count as "break" time.
