So has Draugnar finally matured and can I take him off my mute list?
Draug need not answer. I won't see it. But does anyone else what to chime in with their opinion so I can decide if it is safe to take him off? I kind of miss his ferociously bombastic posts, but he got so over the top in his youthful desire to act tough I had to mute him or kill him before his (mental) 21st birthday, and the former was the better option

"Now Where Have I Heard That Before..." (A Game Played Entirely On Quotes?)
Every message you send has to be a quote from a movie, TV show, book, song, etc., with the exception of locations (as finding a quote for moving to the Ruhr is a bit too difficult, I think)...an example, say, Italy asking Russia for help could be:
"With our combined strength (@Budalest) we can END this destructive conflict, and bring order to the galaxy, er, Europe!" :p

Returning to webdip
After a year away, I've decided to come back to webdip for the duration of my summer holiday (as opposed to just making the occasional post on the forums every 3 months). Not playing any games until I've got past my week away that starts in a fortnight. How's webdip getting on?

Throwing a Game
When is it acceptable to throw a WTA game( or any game for that matter, but WTA has the stiffest "penalty") knowing that you could force a draw? Are there ever grounds to believe that this is ever acceptable? I don't believe so, but looking to be proven wrong. I am of the school that would say Win; failing that, draw. Period. Curious to know what others think.

Are we griping about generations?? The other day I called a local department store men's department to ask if they had a medium gray suit in my size, and the young lady *in the men's department* didn't know that a suit means the pants are the same material and kept wanting to know what size pants I needed with the jacket. She passed me on to somebody who did know what a suit is, happily. *Then I went to a local *men's clothing store* that has suits, jackets, tuxes, as well as more casual clothes, and the young man, the only one working there at the time, didn't know what a suit was. "Oh, I'm sure we have some pants that will go with that dress jacket," he said, and I said, "I just need to know if you are selling suit separates or if this is just a sports coat." His reply: "It's not a sports anything; it's a dress jacket." He was nice enough to get on the phone and call a nearby store (well 45 minutes away) to see if they had medium gray suits, and I said "Make sure you tell them I need a suit, not just a jacket," but he said, "Hi, I'm so-and-so from the _____ store, and I need to know if you have any gray dress jackets." Ay-yi-yi!!!
Hmm. My bank is open 8-6, and 9-4 on the weekends. Not that it really matters, because I never actually go to the brick-and-mortar location.

@Mujus Those sound like some under trained employees. More a reflection on the companies then a reflection on a generation.
No really, who delivers beer?
The sushi restaurant I used to work for delivers beer. And sake.
But then again, y'know, New Orleans. We have drive-thru daiquiri shops. It's not an open container if you don't punch the straw through the top.
So when's Mardi Gras, again?
The day before Ash Wednesday, whenever that falls.
Ah, Fat Tuesday, silly of me lol.

Lmao CA. I live in a college student neighborhood - there are multitudinous beer and wine delivery services, all constricted by Texas' antiquated alcohol laws, but delivery nonetheless.

Also yes LMAO at AWB's drive thru daiquiris. Here in Texas we have a trashy slightly-better-than-taco-bell place out of San Antonio called Taco Cabana - they have drive through margaritas.

@swearingen

I know what you mean about lines. I only let people ahead if they seem to be in a huge hurry or won't take long because in a busy line anything out of the ordinary seems to irritate people, but it's a good strategy. I habitually let drivers ahead of me on the road, at least in city driving, and I see traffic similarly to how you see line-standing. There are worse things that can happen than me sitting in my car chilling with the AC listening to NPR. When hurricanes come through town and the power's out for 10 days, doing that is a luxury, not a burden.
I drive like an old lady. It's always funny when Swingdick Bignuts passes me up in his red F-350... odds are, he'll just beat me to the next red light and I'll pass him up while he's accelerating from a stop. Then we do it all over again.
semck83 (229 D(B))

That happens a lot, AWB, but the problem is, the speeder will get ahead over the long turn. The reason is, there are positive odds that he'll make some light that you won't, and as soon as that happens, you're stuck there while he's racing on to the next light. Ever catching up again isn't that likely; once it happens twice, you're sunk.

People often (understandably) crow when they catch back up to somebody who roared past them, but the roarer does have a statistical advantage in terms of speed, lights notwithstanding.

"People often (understandably) crow when they catch back up to somebody who roared past them, but the roarer does have a statistical advantage in terms of speed, lights notwithstanding."

As a speeder, I can attest to this. Lol. I just have this weird itch (a dangerous urge I might add) where I can't quit trying to get ahead of a train of cars. I hate having to brake when the guy in front of me brakes. I want to do it when I want to do it. Thus I weave around to try to get in front of a pack of cars. Nothing is more dismaying to me than coming up to a red light with like ten cars there.

I think my overall reason for thinking that is that people, seemingly all drivers, accelerate VERY SLOWLY.

Like REALLY SLOWLY. I really don't understand why every single person seems to take so long to start moving. It's fucking infuriating. Also people who screech nearly to a stop, still blocking the lane, to turn right into a driveway.

I guess people are generally just uncomfortable with feeling their body in motion in the car so they as a result take forever to change speeds and directions. But ughhhh it makes me so irritated.
"I guess people are generally just uncomfortable with feeling their body in motion in the car so they as a result take forever to change speeds and directions."

Nah with me it was finally becoming uncomfortable with the sudden stop caused by hitting things.

it's not like i don't look into the intersection for people running reds, but if no one is there, why not just get up to the speed limit asap? i don't get it. and why not turn as quickly as possible without being dangerous? you can turn into McDonalds at like 15, 20 mph, you dont need to slow down to three when its 5pm on a busy city street and the light behind you just turned green
When you drive so fast, it's harder for me to look up from entering my dip press on my phone to react in time.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

you mofo i knew it was you
It's... really not that important to me to drive faster than other people.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
11 Jul 12 UTC
What about getting out of people's way though? I'm not imploring all drivers to move at 10 above the limit everywhere all the time, I'm just kind of wishing people would accelerate a bit faster. Almost every red I get caught at is because I'm stuck behind someone who take a full minute to reach 40 mph.

If they won't do that, I wish they'd at least not bunch up and block two or three lanes at once - stagger out so that people can get around you.

I drive on the interstates a lot, and nothing is more dont-know-whether-to-laugh-or-cry to me than cruising along peacefully in the right lane, passing on the left, until in the distance you see a pack of cars moving at 60-something. Usually around 15 or so. The cause of these? Two drivers are going below the speed limit and are matching speed, essentially blocking the road - the 15 cars are the people who would have passed them but accumulated behind them. The fault is on the guy in the left lane - if you're not going to pass that dude on the right, fall into line and get out of the way.

It's a bit rude to everyone on the road, if you ask me. I'm not as impatient a driver as I'm probably making myself out to be, I never go more than 5 over the limit and get passed a lot - it's just common decency in this overpopulated world to make sure you're not in people's way. Am I wrong for this?
Speed limit, center lane. Pass me up and count the fucks I give.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
11 Jul 12 UTC
That's totally fine, but what if there are two people matching your speed either side of you, and you see ten cars tailgating all three of you?

Also what if there's just two lanes lol.

I'm not accusing *you* of course. I have, I must say, noticed that the drivers in Austin, TX are orders of magnitude less observant and obstructive than Houston drivers.

I've said this before but I like it so:

Houston drivers are good drivers, but they're assholes, so they use their power for evil.

Austin drivers are nice people (and drivers), but they're terribly stupid drivers, so they end up being in most cases even worse than the skilled asshole drivers of Houston.

I don't know what it is about this place. Maybe some combination of the bike culture, the low population (and thus lack of experience with hardcore sprawl and highways), and the hills. Or drugs. Or something honestly I have no clue. Gets under my skin though.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
11 Jul 12 UTC
less observant and more obstructive I should have said
@Thucy: Come to CA. If drivers piss you off, you can just shoot them or throw their lapdogs into traffic. People who don't get out of the way get suddenly swallowed up by giant fissures in the earth.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

What are SF drivers like?

I want to test a theory that drivers in all hippy cities drive like Austin drivers.
Um, I don't know... normal? I'd say as a generalization that SF drivers tend to drive above the speed limit. It's 65 on most freeways, and people generally drive 70-80. We roll stop signs. Seems like most drivers are on phones despite a law prohibiting it. Drivers generally defer to pedestrians like they're supposed to. Everybody hates urban bicyclists, who follow no traffic rules.
Oh, and in the City itself there are packs of tourists. They're busy looking at the Golden Gate Bridge and wandering out into the street to take a picture, so they're road hazards. Pedestrian traffic is unpredictable in Chinatown. Throughout the City, people are double-parked or in the process of parallel parking (which to a passing car is functionally the same thing) so you get used to swerving around them, no big deal. There are substantial hills, so you have to get used to that, especially parallel parking on a steep incline.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

"Everybody hates urban bicyclists, who follow no traffic rules."

Word up. I can respect those mofos - but only if they obey traffic law like they're supposed to. Sorry if I don't have sympathy for a cyclist who has a near-death encounter that doesn't stop at stop signs.
