My NHL Nightmare Season Is Complete--Kings Win the Cup
First the Ducks play up and down and then completely bottom out to 13th place...
Then the Rangers blow it...
And now...now, the worst team possible to win the Cup for a Ducks fan...great win for the Kings, they deserved it, though.

Combating complacency.
Nearly every time I win a game I end up making really, really stupid mistakes in other games. This is a word of warning to other players: Don't get lazy or complacent if you do well once. Learning that lesson is part of what separates the good from the great... not even just in Diplomacy, but life in general.

What's the weirdest thing you do?
Me, I think in accents. I'm not even joking either. It's probably one of the strangest things I do. The accents I think in most commonly are British, Australian, and Jersey accents. Though I use Russian and French accents quite a lot. With the occasional pirate accent.

PS Roflcopter "bro-patrol"

Somehow I have the feeling that Putin started including larger doses of humor in his discussions since last time him and I crossed our swords on this exact same issue. I must say, I like. I'm going to go on a +1 spree of that little Russian dictator while you guys bring him down!
"I expected no less than all-caps, heavy breathing from PE, who takes umbrage that anything be called out for being less than respectful, even in passing."

Caps are for emphasis. Take it up with kestas and co. If we ever got boldface, that would be nice.

"@Eden - Using "boy" to refer to a grown man is worse than using "girl" to refer to a female of collegiate age. "Boy" carries with it a racial connotation not found in "girl"."

No, it doesn't - which is to say that both terms were used to denigrate blacks. Not that any of that is relevant to the fact that if any male - black, white, whatever - acts like a child, he deserves to be labelled a child. I know this forum loves to act like intent doesn't matter and context is irrelevant, but intent does matter and context is fully relevant. That's pretty much the end of that.

Actually, PE, I already pointed out that I didn't think it was intentional, but that it definitely sounded rapey.

But let's get to the real question here.

Does this rag smell like chloroform to you?
And now Putin is gonna superimpose what he wanted that statement to mean because he's wrong and can't argue from reality anymore. I'll consider that conversation resolved.
No, actually, gasoline! Don't put that in my face, gas smells horrible!
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Jun 12 UTC
Yes, context matters, so choose your words wisely. Call him a child, not a boy. I dare you to walk through over-the-rhine in Cincinnati and call an 18 year old black male a "boy" to his face because he is acting childish. You won't make it out alive.
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Jun 12 UTC
Stick with chloroform, SD. Gasoline is a known carcinogen so putting a rag soake din gas over someone's face could give them lung cancer in the long haul.
Okay, so I should deign to thin-skinned thugs and watch my words. Yeah fuck that. I know what you're referencing - I live in Baton Rouge, after all, I'm not blind to the racial connotation and I - gasp! - might even not use that specific word, saying "child" instead.

That doesn't mean there's a problem with calling a boy - as in, an immature male, in context of the male being childish - a boy.
Putin33 (111 D)
11 Jun 12 UTC
Good, glad PE appointed himself the victor as per usual and exited the conversation. The vein busting out of his head was stressing me out.
What's that? I couldn't hear you over the sound of what I actually say being ignored in favor of what's more convenient to attack

""SD, no, the placement of "lol" is clearly awkward laughter about the fact that he accidentally might have implied something rather bad. It's not joking about it."

Yeah, buddy, sure it is."

HEY GUYS HEY ALL YOU GUYS (AND GIRLS I GUESS):

I dunno if y'all knew this about me, but I just sort of toss "lol" at the end of a lot of shit I write on the internet. Lol. Like that. Lol.

It means next to nothing.

I thank PE for defending me, he is right about my intentions, but I was too fatigued to even try to explain what I was saying. If you are confused please refer to his posts because it is exactly what I was going for.

To SD, who thinking lol can't mean awkward laughing, have you ever *read* any of my posts? Lol.

Lol, let's try to get this thread back into some awkward territory so I can demonstrate some awkward lols to you. Heeeerrreee we go!

"Did I ever tell you about the time me and my sister were---"
"Hey bro my sister just died do you have to talk about your sister?"
"Oh... whoops. Probly shouldn't have mentioned my sister since your sister's dead. Lol."

Putin33 (111 D)
11 Jun 12 UTC
No, Draugnar, words mean whatever PE want them to mean. If it's inconvenient for him to be mindful of words, then they're not offensive. Who cares about the multi-hundred year history of the word 'boy' as it pertains to adult black men, PE declared it to be a non-issue by his unilateral decree, so therefore that's how it is. Conversation resolved.
Draugnar (0 DX)

If there is an alternative and you know the words you are about to use will provoke a reaction, you must consider your choice of words. Do you wish to provoke the reaction? That is also part of the context. Environment and intended readership/listener alter the context. Personally, I woudl say "stop being so childish" in that situation and I never, ever, refer to a grown man as boy any more than I'd refer to any woman as hoe.
I know. Which is why, as I explicitly stated two posts ago, that if I were in that situation, I would probably concede to prudence and say something like "stop being so childish" or refer to the person as a "child."

That, again, is not relevant to the principle of refusing to confer adult-level respect to people who act like children.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
11 Jun 12 UTC
Oh, by the way Putin, I noticed you didn't call out Draugnar for calling us all cunts. As if a "cunt" is a bad thing. That's actually one of the categories I refrain from as much as I can - use of sexual words conflated with bad or dirty things. It's how I tell myself I'm sex positive.

However, I, knowing Draugnars will be Draugnars, and knowing he was just trying to be funny, do not call him out, and indeed rarely do say anything to anyone who uses one of the words I personally hold as things that shouldn't be said.

Anyway, I know it's usually standard procedure to acknowledge that some joke was made in bad taste and apologize, but in this case I refuse because, as PE pointed out, it is my belief that I didn't say anything offensive at all, and that your offense was taken from failing to read my post correctly.

I'm just going to peace out now, with the side note that this is the reason I love you guys. Webdip, I mean.

Weirdest thing I do? Participate on this website (I guess I'm kind of boring)

It seems I'm a bit late to this party as the discussion has already veered off course, spawned a few memes, and devolved into the usual arguing back and forth between the regulars. Great thread!
Yeah, interesting how Putin's wasted more time on my three all-caps words than the use of "cunt."

Okay, I lied. The egregious inconsistency in his ethical standards isn't interesting anymore.

You were already in an conniption over a simple comment in passing, why would I hazard to call out Draugnar, who is notoriously uncouth, anyway? As if you wouldn't have gone apeshit if I had done that, too. He also wasn't talking to me, or about me, you were, so that's why you got my attention - you poor victim.

Only someone as dense as you (and probably Krellin) would interject yourself in a discussion, put somebody on blast, and then bemuse yourself with the 'hypocrisy' of someone responding to you rather than someone else.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Just came here to say that a quick CTRL+F of "hypocrisy" will only highlight a post by Putin33, and once I post this, me as well.

Should I bother pointing out what I already said about caps being used for emphasis? You've either missed or ignored it once. I'll just go ahead and point it out this last time and if it keeps getting missed/ignored that'll just be that.

And no, I actually wouldn't have. Funny that you're scared of Draugnar, though.
We've had this discussion at work recently. A 30 year old single "woman" objected to people using the word "girl" to mean post-pubescent female. She was the only person who objected. Nobody else (neither male nor female) agreed with her. The consensus was that she probably wouldn't get very far with that because of "The Spice Girls", "Girls Aloud", "Girls Just Wanna have Fun", "Material Girl" and many many other similar phrases. Somebody also mentioned that many of the females at work went on what they themselves called "Girlie Nights Out".

IIRC the word "girl" comes from "gurl", which was the name of the type of outfit an unmarried post pubescent female would wear in the 15th/16th century (thus advertising her status). So "girl" originally referred to an *unmarried* post pubescent female. A "woman" was a *married* post pubescent female and using the word "girl" to refer to a pre-pubescent female is actually incorrect, though the phrase "young girl" could be used instead. [Of course, the English language is a living language and changes from area to area and over time.]
Putin33 (111 D)

PE, you're rivalling Fulham for most obtuse member of webdip. Yes, I get that your caps was used for emphasis - because the *asterix* is as inconvenient an alternative as respecting women - but does that somehow mean your profanity laced tirade wasn't a moment of agitation and anger for you? I don't get why you keep harping on that point.

And cue your response that I'm once again placing undue attention on your caps, after you keep bringing it up.

"And no, I actually wouldn't have. Funny that you're scared of Draugnar, though."

Right, right. Naturally that would be the point you took away from that.

So because infantilizing language is persuasive and only a minority in your group challenges it that means you're somehow in the right. Great argument.
Eh. It may have used to be acceptable, but it clearly isn't now, and Putin's right in saying that the would-be-victims of derisive language being okay with it doesn't make it right to say. It's still disrespectful to refer to an adult - being someone who has actually earned that status by acting with sufficient maturity - as a child, sex aside, and since 'girl' is analogous to child, referring to a mature, adult woman as a 'girl' should be avoided.

I'm kind of surprised the discussion occurred at work, though. I think professional business standards would require ignoring what I've said before and simply using man/woman for everyone, even if someone is acting like a child. I had a boss that would play fart noises and YouTube videos of black people singing about fried chicken on the job, but hell if I'd get caught dead calling her a 'girl' even if everything I'd seen of her suggested that she had the mental maturity of a ten-year-old.
Putin33 (111 D)

All these discussions invariably come down to a bunch of bros claiming that their "female friends" said it's ok, or their black friends, or whatever.

New Initiative: Clearing out old unfinished games
I am going to be responsible for clearing out old paused discontinued games. It will take me a while, so if you have a game in mind, let me know and I will make it a priority.
Hopefully this will clear up the "join games" option so more people would be willing to take on games with CDs.
