This Time On Philosophy Weekly--Grouped Stars or Dividing Stripes: Nationalism vs. Global
Now, this one I DEFINITELY want, if possible, folks from other nations outside the US to contribute to, as I'd be keen to hear what someone might have to say who actually IS part of a greater-than-a-nation-union, such as the EU, but it's a pretty simple question:
Politically AND Ideologically, which is preferable--Nationalism or Globalization/Unions, and which do you believe is the "future" politically?

Ok... looks like there's I'm overwhelmed for the PPSC vs WTA (though I still have to say backstabbing an ally like that is is very unmoral to my moral standard... and I have been in lots of games where the main player gets 18 sc while the secondary ally gets 16 sc)... how about the 2 day vs 1 day phase thing? I really don't like waiting days for a game to proceed...

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong,
Professor: commenting on the Forum what is interesting, which move is a good move, etc
TA: Offers the student direct hints on who and how to conduct diplomacy and what moves to make
Student: Using this as an opportunity to sharpen their diplomacy skills by playing with direct assistant and guidance from their TA and from comments by the professors of the Forum

"though I still have to say backstabbing an ally like that is is very unmoral to my moral standard... and I have been in lots of games where the main player gets 18 sc while the secondary ally gets 16 sc"

I think you misunderstand what this game is about. This game is *ABOUT* stabbing people. It's about lying to their face and making such a gut-wrenching stab that they're still smiling admiring the beauty of it. If that type of game doesn't appeal to you, then you're playing the wrong game. The example (18/16) you're talking about is the *worst* result possible in a game of diplomacy. No game should end that way.

... I now how to stab smiley... last year I was crazy on Live games and if you ask Killer, his nickname for me was quote "the crazy backstabber" because I stab a lot...

I'd be interested to hear how you play Diplomacy _without_ stabbing.

And why.
Of course BenGuin stabs. He's won ten games! You'd be lucky to get one survive if you were always honest. He's just bullshitting you because he doesn't want to lose all his points if someone else wins.

This thread is going everywhere...

If we need someone to step in for the first game, I'd rather it not be me. I'll be in and out of town for the next week or so, and I'd rather not take the spot of someone who could be there right now.

I'm still hoping that there's a game two.
any idea why we need someone to step in for game one? It looks like there are seven on the list.
BenGuin (248 D)
03 Jul 11 UTC
nope not a clue
BenGuin (248 D)
03 Jul 11 UTC
@ Cachimbo that will mean that the game two will have to wait for another week... can you find a sub to play for you? say a student from game 1?
Alright now, this truly has gone everywhere. Lets see if I can sort this all out.

Smiley, if you go to the other SoW thread threadID=733489 and go to page 6, my long post there explains everything quite well. Basically, you give us your 3 best countries, and we match you with whatever player has one of them. You mentor them throughout the game via PM or email or whatever, and give them advice on diplomatic and tactical matters.

@ Ninjaintervention - ThisTakesGumption has yet to join, and I'm booting him tomorrow if he doesn't join by the time i wake up.

@ ButcherChin and BenGuin, in the other SoW thread, Tru Ninja lays out much of the protocol, and I copied and pasted most of it on page 6.

@ Cachimbo, I can put someone else in the game 1 slot, but game 2 will be starting this week as well. I'm about to put it up
BenGuin (248 D)
03 Jul 11 UTC
@Cachimbo and Goldfinger0303, I suggest that a sub be found for the first week, someone who can access Cachibo's account and play for him... preferably someone he trust and at least KNOW how to play Webdiplomacy... However, it would be best if Cachimbo could access the computer to check WD say twice or three times a day :D
Well, Ben, that's why the phases are two days long. Getting a sub for the School of War defeats the purpose of the School of War. If he can access it once a day, then he shall be fine. The game is starting towards the end of the week, so hopefully there will not be a problem with the phase length.

Are TAs still needed? I might be able to share a few thoughts on A/E/F/G, if needed, but I'd like a little more info (e.g. schedule) before committing. Thanks for all who put so much time and energy into this, it's a great idea!
The plot thickens...

I need to retire, so a new Italian TA is needed.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
04 Jul 11 UTC
@MM: I believe that TA's are currently needed in Game 1 (Draug apparently is leaving) and Game 2 needs a few. Game 1 is scheduled to start soon (within the next few days) and is 2 day phases while game 2 has yet to fill up.

If you are interested in TAing in Game 1, I'm sure we can shuffle someone to Italy and you to a country of your choosing with no problems.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

Looks like I'm the only other person that put in for Italy. If you want to take England, I can take Italy.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
04 Jul 11 UTC
I could take on England in game one, but not until Wednesday, and assuming the game isn't started before Wednesday...

PS - Hey, Tru Ninja, can I get a copy of your thoughts on Italy?!
Presuming the e-mail address listed on your profile isn't defunct, MM, I forwarded you his statistical analysis on all the countries. Might be a good starting point for Italy. :)

awesome ;) with MM on the TA list, you guys are in for a treat :)

wanted to address something Ben said up top this page of the thread - Ben, PPSC is NOT diplomacy. its a variant, unfortunately much liked on this site because it allows newer players to get a few points and feel fulfilled.

the reality is that if you're playing PPSC, even if you solo, you are going to get very little respect from the real top players on the site or in the dip community at large. maybe that does not matter, but I just want you to be clear that PPSC is NOT real "Diplomacy". its a much less enjoyable variant.

hope you're clear on that now. ;)

In order to promote good playing behavior, I'd like to introduce the concept of "Death with Honor", which I suggest to be included as a tie-breaker in tournaments just after the number of wins. Definition follows:

Your 2012 Presidential Pick
I know it is a little early, but I am curious. If the American presidential election were tomorrow, who would you vote for and why? You can pick Republicans who have not announced their candidacy yet. You can also pick a Democrat that you would pick over Obama.

I recently won gameID=61459 and I'm confused by the points distribution. Shouldn't the distribution be 20/10/1 scaled up to 135/68/7 and not 131/73/8?

Why are there so few quality World Dip games here?
I've played hundreds of games, and on this site my win\draw ratio is quite strong, as it generally tends to be. I consider myself to be a strong player, not an expert, but quite skilled.

However, I am noticing that in the World Dip variant, the talent pool seems to be rather shallow...why is this?

PPSC vs. WTA
What are your thoughts? After a couple of couple of games under my belt I'm beginning to grow quite irritated at PPSC. It always seems to dwindle off into one less well doing player helping another better doing player to a solo for a fair share of points. More under the cut.

After the private university furore, Dawkins is in trouble again
Apparently one of our elders and betters has made a somewhat questionable analogy between a man chewing gum and the unwelcomed propositioning of a woman at an atheist conference. I am sure that this was eminantly logical but I am just struggling to see how!
