Gender was a linguistic property of certain words. English doesn't actually have linguistic gender, which makes it a bit confusing, but most languages have gender for every noun (and it's a pain in the ass).

Either way, giving an unused word a new meaning was a perfectly reasonable thing to do, though it could have gone better.

phil, gender was a very used word. It was synonym for sex. In the webster dictionary, it still is.
