What Israel is For
http://news.yahoo.com/funeral-begins-four-jews-killed-paris-attack-101918527.html "The fresh violence has shaken the Jewish community in France, which numbers 500,000 to 600,000 people. French migration to Israel hit a record high last year of 6,600 people, and many believe the trend will accelerate after the Paris slayings." Say they're wrong in the West Bank--they are. Say the last war was miserable--it was. But THIS is what Israel is for in a world which is still hotly Antisemitic.

Issue with the new "Preview" feature big map
I know that the stand-off X's on a regular big map are often not accurate (and that issues with the big map aren't related to the order resolution code; see threadID=494283), but I'm surprised to see the stand-off X's turn up in random places in the big map of the "Preview" feature. Why would they show up for no reason?

Vash's Political Survey
Since the political compass is not the best tool for determining actual political allignment. I am compiling my own survey of the webDip community's political standings. Please take this survey (which is more accurate IMHO): http://politics.beasts.org/scripts/survey (should take about 15 minutes) and post your results in the comments. Also, please don't let this devolve into a political argument thread. Thank You.

Mathematics question
h(x)=xe^x^2=xe^u with u=x^2 so u'=2x
So far so good. Now I thought the next step would be: h'(x)=(x+1)e^x^2*2x
Apparently it should be: h'(x)=x+e^x^2*2x
Why doesn't x get multiplied with the rest?

krellin, having this debate is pointless until you recognize the difference between sex and gender. Sex is physiological, gender is psychosocial. Idiots confusing matters led to gender being used interchangeably with sex at one point, but it would be nice to get back to a distinction.

As for nationality, there's some confusion here as well. I would argue that nationality is what nation you feel you belong to. Nations don't necessarily have to have counties, but a lot of them do. I would also argue that what you were talking about was actually citizenship.

"Good lord Tr(anny)Prado....what the fuck back-assward fucked up public education has destroyed your mind? Nationality is actually a legal definition, based upon, generally, where you have born. It is a human construct, with a specfic [sic] meaning. Just because morons like you want to ignore society and pretend that things exists in a way in which they do not does not make it so." Political Science says otherwise, krelly. From an AP textbook: Nation - As used by political scientists, primarily a psychological term to describe attachment or identity rather than a geopolitical unit such as the state.
"Though we are certain your penis is too small to be seen with the himan [sic] eye" Don't talk about yourself like that. It hurts self-esteem.
"This **childish** libertard [sic (how do you, of all people, spell libtard wrong?)] notion that "gender" and "sex" are different is just a result of your pathetic brainwashing." Take that up with any modern psychologist.
"And....since you have admitted it is MENTAL to not comprehend your sex....then you, [un]naturally, agree with me that those with such thinking have a mental disorde.r [sic (I think you type too fast)]" No. I was saying that if you thought you had genitalia which you don't have, that's mental. Transgender people are very aware of their genitalia, but they feel like they were born into the wrong gender role and identify with the other one. Some people identify as neither, even. There's more to it than you think. I'm sorry if me having a comprehensive knowledge of facts intimidates you.
"Grow the fuck up and enter reality, my friend." Same to you.
"then I can hardly trust that such a mentally ill person will be able to properly differentiate the meaning between a green light and a red light." Look, guys! krellin, the medical expert he is, has found a universal link between being transgender and having color-blindness.

"Idiots confusing matters led to gender being used interchangeably with sex at one point, but it would be nice to get back to a distinction."

False. Sex and gender were interchangeable until the word "gender" was hijacked by the feminist movement in the 1970s.

Btw I don't agree with krellin on a lot of things, but one thing j agree on is the gender and how people just changed the meaning of it because they felt like it.

"Meanings change all the time."
They change all the time, yes, but over time. When you get a mob of people to force the government to change the definition, that's a different story.
phil_a_s (0 DX)
11 Jan 15 UTC
Yoyo, if you're going with that argument for the meaning of gender, you should be shouting about how it's a linguistical term and thus has very little to do with sex or what gender means now.
phil_a_s (0 DX)
11 Jan 15 UTC
I don't think 'mob of people' is the right form to use here, especially since the word being hijacked didn't actually mean sex then, but whatever floats your boat, I guess.
Yoyoyozo (95 D)
11 Jan 15 UTC
Frankly I believe that the evolution of language and words is a beautiful thing, but nkt when its forced like that.

By the way, it's not the government that gets to decide what words mean for English, which makes it so great. It's consensus.
phil_a_s (0 DX)
11 Jan 15 UTC
How on earth was it forced? Repeated use of the word in its new context? I really don't get in what way this was a concerted evil effort to kill language or whatever.
Yoyoyozo (95 D)
11 Jan 15 UTC
Um yes it did or at least it was VERY close to it. Look it up. Literally no one used the word gender to mean masculinity or feniminity in a physiological sense except this one sexologist in 1955. It never caught on until the 1970s. So yeah.
Yoyoyozo (95 D)
11 Jan 15 UTC
Yeah it was forced. Anyone using the word gender to mean sex was heavily frowned upon by the feminist movement. Even feminist used refused to use this new definition was removed from feminist clubs and organizations.
phil_a_s (0 DX)
11 Jan 15 UTC
So, why are people using it to mean masculinity or femininity in a physiological sense now? Especially since that seems to defeat your point? Did you mean psychological sense?

In any case, it's because there was this word lying around, unused, and a thing to be named. Doesn't have to be complicated.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
11 Jan 15 UTC
So what did gender mean in 1954?
Genuinely curious.

Gender was a linguistic property of certain words. English doesn't actually have linguistic gender, which makes it a bit confusing, but most languages have gender for every noun (and it's a pain in the ass).
phil_a_s (0 DX)
11 Jan 15 UTC
Either way, giving an unused word a new meaning was a perfectly reasonable thing to do, though it could have gone better.
