ESPN Streak for the Ca$h
Anyone here play this with at least semi-seriousness, and is there interest in making a webDip group on ESPN for friendly competition? I haven't been picking too much but with CFB and NFL seasons starting up in a couple weeks, I plan on trying again. I've gotten up to W21 before during football season.

Conway's Game of Life
I suspect many of you are familiar with Conway's game of life, and there may have been a thread on this topic in the past, but I have been messing around with different patterns and I find this 'game' simply amazing. Such simple physics, but such complex and cool things can happen. If you aren't familiar with the game check out the rules here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life
For those who do know about this, what is the coolest pattern you have seen??

Tony Stewart Accidentally Runs Over/Kills Driver During Race
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtBH9FJ3LOU I have never watched a NASCAR or Sprint Cup race in my life...because frankly, I couldn't care less about cars going around and around in a circle 500 times (I don't doubt it's hugely challenging and takes talent, it's just not for me) but wow...what a way to go. :/ Getting run over like that mid-race, shit...

Is it possible for there to be a war where all sides are actually *right*?
We're all familiar with the idea that there are wars in which everyone is at fault. Let's consider the hypothetical opposite: Is it possible for there to be a war where all sides are actually *right*?
(This is somewhat related to the "religious people so anti-humanity" topic but I think this deserves it's own thread.)

Fair enough, Palwatch isn't Palestinian, my mistake...

Do you care to address the actual quoted parts?

"I love how Obiwan Obiwan completely ignores the genocidal comments made by Israelis."

Swap my name for yours, and Israel's actions for those of Russia...or Assad's Syria...or North Korea...and I return the sentiment...

But hey, those are states YOU back, so their atrocities are A-OK, right?

Considering the source is a far-right Israeli settler ideologue, what basis do I have to think those quotes weren't fabrications?
@obi:
"I'm sorry...they make those places, as well as the hospitals (as I mentioned and linked in a past thread on this, they were firing from/around a hospital previously) targets.(...)
If X isn't a target, and is truly neutral, it has to be treated as such by BOTH sides.

Hamas didn't do that...so if your opponent in war is going to fight dirty and not observe the rules, and the rule-keeping body won't do a damn thing to stop it besides giving the diplomatic equivalent of "Tsk, tsk, you naughty boy you!", what incentive do you have to follow those rules?

The idea of "rules of war" break down when Hamas acts as if there are none. "

So you're argument is that Hamas didnt follow the rules of war, so Israel doesnt either, is that correct?

From Chris Hedges,...I saw small boys baited and killed by Israeli soldiers in the Gaza refugee camp of Khan Younis. The soldiers swore at the boys in Arabic over the loudspeakers of their armored jeep. The boys, about 10 years old, then threw stones at an Israeli vehicle and the soldiers opened fire, killing some, wounding others. I was present more than once as Israeli troops drew out and shot Palestinian children in this way. Such incidents, in the Israeli lexicon, become children caught in crossfire."

Obi, I don't know how many times you need to be told this to actually consider it, but maybe you're wrong on how you see this issue. In a perfect world, no, when your opponent doesn't follow the rules, you are allowed to cheat too, but we don't live in a perfect world. If we did, we wouldn't have this kind of petty fighting that's been going on for a thousand years between religions. The world we live in, and the one that's not about to change no matter how much you don't like it, is one where the press is going to grab onto every little slimmer of a news story they can, and when an Israeli soldier goes berserk on a kid, they're going to have a hell of a time. The press sells the story they write to the public, the public eats it up because there's no one else that tells us what's going on, no one else writes the stories, and we take what we hear on TV to the polls, where we vote on what the press says.

Well, guess what? The press doesn't get good ratings when they pit the Goliath as the victim, and that's what Israel is - Goliath. Goliath is fighting David, and everyone loves an underdog; it's programmed into us. So, the press has their ratings at stake, they want to sell the best story possible for their own purposes, and they do. In their story, David, the Palestinian people, are being oppressed by Goliath and are forced to fight with their slingshots (literally) against the bulky steel armor (literally) of the IDF. David is the victim here. That's how the story goes. You don't have to agree, but it doesn't matter if you agree, because that's the story that's getting broadcasted and no one can change that.

If you can't change the story you're telling, you have to try to get them to stop telling it. That's pretty much the only thing you can do. The only way to get them to stop telling their story is to convince Israel to stop giving them reasons to write. That means you should support peace, because without peace, the press is going to write and write and write, Palestine is going to become an independent nation, Israel is going to go to war to keep that from being so, people are going to die, and as more and more people die, David is going to get more and more support, more and more people are going to go to the polls and vote in people that support David, Israel is going to lose international credibility, and before you know it Israel will be all on its own.

I'm not telling you this is right - it's not - but it's how it is, and in the last couple of years, reading these stories more and more and deeper every time, it's become obviously clear to me that the only option is long-lasting peace. I don't care who you think won't go for it, I don't care whether you don't want to give up certain things, I don't care if Hamas and the parties in the Knesset have to be put in cuffs and led into a conference room to meet with each other without snipers aiming through the windows, but the only option is peace, and every time you and people that think like you fight it, you're only leading to a faster end of any international support Israel gets, and if you think that's a crazy thing to say, you should probably realize that the United States is basically the only country left that's offering them international support at all.

"Considering the source is a far-right Israeli settler ideologue, what basis do I have to think those quotes weren't fabrications?"

That they're cited, you can check those citations, and at least one is a YouTube video, so you can definitely watch and verify if that Hamas speaker is legit or not?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

"So you're argument is that Hamas didnt follow the rules of war, so Israel doesnt either, is that correct?"

I'd rephrase it as saying that Hamas not following the rules of war, and the UN and external forces not being able to make them follow the rules of war, make it harder for Israel to fight the war cleanly, both in practice (I've cited numerous times Hamas' human shields practice, including a spokes person not just defending but advocating it in an interview) and ideology (fair or not, it has to be allowed that if your enemy cheats, it becomes more and more tempting for you to cheat...especially if that cheating gives them a huge advantage...you don't want to cede advantage to your enemy in war.)
So the shelling of the school that was housing civilians is justifiable because Hamas has also abused civilians, is that correct?

"They're MONSTERS. The entire country is a lunatic state. Virtually the entire population is seething with racist rage. "

Putin 2014

"But the Jew, after all, is also a human being. Certainly, none of us doubts that. We only doubt that he is a decent human being. He does not get along with us. He lives by other laws than we do. The fact that he is a human being is not sufficient reason for us to allow him to subject us in inhumane ways. He may be a human being — but what kind of a human being is he! If someone slaps your mother in the face, do you say: “Thank you! He is after all a human being!” That is not a human being, it is a MONSTER. Yet how much worse has the Jew done to our mother Germany, and is still doing today!"

Joseph Goebbels 1932

Dehumanization, for all your political needs.

And 2 of you liked it.

You have to be fucking kidding me.

Obligatory emotional manipulation in order to deflect from the monstrous behavior of Israelis.

Typical. Predictable.

Don't bother condemning Israelis when they are calling for the extermination of people, when they want to hang children from trees, when they call for turning Gaza into Hiroshima, when they call for concentration camps, when they set teenagers on fire in lynch mobs, when the IDF walks around in t-shirts with pregnant Arab women as targets.

Nope, nothing to say about that. No Goebbels comparisons there.
I sure as fuck do, and now I condemn you.

"I sure as fuck do"

Right.
So, I speak about dehumanization, I say Ive seen it on the Jewish side more, and yet you still call me out for playing the "anti-semite card." Considering I did not call you an anti semite, I called you out for dehuminization, considering I have not called one person an anti semite since this war started and still I'm called out for it, that always works for you putin. Your out card.
"""I sure as fuck do"

I think that after quiet a few threads we all know what you guys (and I) think about this conflict.. I would be interested in how the rest of the community feels about it.

I know it is hard to even read this thread, but try and participate just so that it doesn't become a single argument between 2 persons... and if you have no opinion, I'm sure you do now that every side has been extensively debating it!

And for those who have been very active here why not move to the thread about Ebola which is also full of outrageous scientific bullshit and which would, IMO, need your passion and expertise. (not sarcasm, i'm being serious, this threadID=1169850 really is appalling)

The real tragedy of Putin's absurd and disgusting posts is that I didn't get to see that Obi thought that Pal-Watch, a well known and quite straight forward anti-Palestinian propaganda site, was a Palestinian website.
Well at least he admitted it, I'll give him that. I'm happy to see the new obi that can actually admit a mistake.

@TheMinisterOfWar

"So the shelling of the school that was housing civilians is justifiable because Hamas has also abused civilians, is that correct?"

No, TheMinisterOfWar, it's understandable because given the way Hamas fights a war--ie, by fighting within populated areas, using UN schools as weapons storage units, firing from hospitals, etc.--any Israeli response is going to involve casualties as a result of Hamas choosing both that particular battlefield and that particular way of fighting.

UN centers should not be hit or used during a war.
We can all agree that's true.
Hamas broke the rules and made those neutral UN centers non-neutral by using them as weapons storage areas, repeatedly, after the UN told them to stop, and the UN was therefore either powerless to stop them, or chose not to do so.

If you're Israel, and your choices are to concede Hamas that advantage, and give them that military advantage because they're cheating and breaking the rules, or break the rules right back and refuse to give them that military advantage or the feeling that they can store weapons there without consequence, what do you do?

That's why Is ay it's understandable, if not justifiable.

And from the Hamas perspective...hey--if the UN doesn't stop them, why WOULD they stop breaking the rules and endangering people? They lose absolutely nothing by doing so...we can all agree that doesn't justify it at all, but it is understandable why, if you're not going to get caught, or if you get caught you won't have to face consequences, you'll go ahead and break the rules.

Frankly, I blame the United Nations for a good deal of Hamas' activity here...

If they're so offended at the way Israel's dealing with the Hamas situation, why don't they deal with it themselves?

The United Nations is like a referee in such a scenario--they're supposed to keep the rules and make sure BOTH sides follow them, right? Because if the referee is lax, and one side cheats, they have an unfair advantage, so to even it up, the other side is liable to cheat, knowing they won't get caught or, if they do, likely won't be punished by such a lax referee, yes?

The United Nations and international community has failed in their refereeing duties...

Hence, both Hamas and Israel cheat, because they know they can, and the natural fear is if one side doesn't do it, the other will, and will have and advantage, and advantages can kill you in war, so cheating becomes a means of self-preservation.
Putin33 (111 D)

You're blaming the UN for Israel shelling their schools?

Anybody but Israel, right?

obiwanobiwan (248 D)
05 Aug 14 UTC
And I have yet to hear you address why you're so upset, Putin...

If Israel occupies or conquers Gaza, and you think Conquest = Peace...

Why should that bother YOU, advocate of conquest that you are (and yet still hilariously calling others "bloodthirsty"...unless, in Putin Land, conquest ISN'T a bloody, nasty business, and is instead sunshine and rainbows?)
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

"You're blaming the UN for Israel shelling their schools?

How many more times are we going to get this lie that Israel shelled and fired missiles at UN schools because they supposedly had rockets in them. If so, then why did Israel deny they even shelled the schools at first? Why did they then claim that they were fired at "nearby", and shelled the school even though the UN gave them the coordinates of the school eight times?

Israel isn't even providing the excuses you are for murdering children.
TheMinisterOfWar (553 D)

But breaking the Rules of War does not mean cheating. It means killing innocents. So you accept that one side breaks international humanitarian law because the other side also does. Thereby judging the State of Israel by the same standards as Hamas. I would argue that standard for Israel, an ostensibly democratic and liberal society, should be higher than that of a jihadist organisation.

Not to mention the fact that such an approach views civilians as pawns for one of either sides, rather than innocents that need protection.

Another question: how much collateral damage is acceptable in the defense of Israel?
