What do you mean by 'Democracy'?
Inspired by conversation with YJ I have taken upon myself the task of educating and discussing the concept of 'Democracy' with the community here. So, what do you mean by 'Democracy'? and conversely what things stop a system being 'Democratic'?

What am I saying hecks, why don't you spell it out ??
hecks (164 D)

As I understand it, the intended irony is twofold:
1. Your close relationship with a person of hispanic heritage evidences that you respect that heritage, and thus your use of the pejorative term should be taken as playful, expressing the opposite of what the word would generally mean.
2. Your original statement was actually intended as an insult to the sort of British tourist who visits Spain and the sort of person who supports hostile policy toward Spain; as such, your use of the word was intended to express not your views, but those of the Brits you mocked.

I still don't think it's funny. Let me know if there's an additional layer of intended irony I missed.

"Those dirty rotten Spics are asking for it ..... I think this calls for an invasion.
I suggest we send thousands of our hardest fighters (men and women) over there and cause havoc in their Towns all Summer in some drunken rampage.
They will be begging for mercy at the end of that ...... "
1. No ... not sure what the person of Hispanic heritage is all about but that is a red herring
2. Yes
The use of the word Spics was to feign outrage at the Spanish whilst Spain has been the number 1 holiday destination for the British working classes for many many years and the average Brit doesn't give a hoot about Gibraltar.
Of course we invade Spain every Summer with our charter flights, cheap booze, arrogant attitudes and and extremely badly behaviour.
I'm not sure anything Cameron can threaten over the Gibraltar issue is going to scare the Spanish people more than 25 pissed up Geordies in a bar in Torremolinos when they are informed that the Newcastle Brown Ale has run out.

@Invictus, thank you.

@Nbaby: i googled the term ironic racism, and came across that article. You may want to read it for comparison. I mean, you are priviledged enough to have internet access, and thus you are capable of educating yourself - matters like racism/sexism or other social evils are issues for everyone.

I can't just say, "well there are no black people in Ireland, thus there is no racism" and go on to ignore the offence caused by ignoring the rest rest of the world (NB my first visit to London in the 90s was the first time i saw a black person in real life, as there were very few black people in Ireland when i was growing up)

Whilst what Nigee says was undoubtedly not a great thing to say, there are a few points that need to be made;
1) spic is not the same as n* - the two words do not have a very similar history and thus, whilst both are clearly bad, they do not carry the same power.
2) Nigee has a history of saying ridiculous things, to the point where it's very had to get a consistent idea of his worldview. Thus, to use him as an example of a hypocritical liberal is rather strange when it's not entirely clear whether he identifies as a liberal.
3) When the only time the Krellin appears to care about language is to score points in an unrelated thread, it becomes clear that he doesn't really care about the power of language and instead is just seeking to derail threads so that they become about himself. In this case he's been successful, but I would hope that, in future, the community treats his comments with the contempt that they invariably deserve.

None of this is to say that what Nigee said was a good thing to say, nor is it to condone racial slurs and epithets, but when talking about them we should take care to avoid false equivalencies, and any show of care which is obviously not about the issue but instead about grandstanding should be shot down immediately, as it's just incredibly disrespectful to those that the issues actually affect.

1. "spic is not the same as n* - " says the man who never talked to a Hispanic in his life. I suppose "wetback" is ok, too, right?
2. "Nigee has a history of saying ridiculous things,..." therefore, because he's an idiot, he can get away with it? Oh...he can call other people out, but shouldn't be held to his own
krellin (80 DX)

3. "When the only time the Krellin appears to care about language is to score points"
Really? I on'y care about language to score points? lol OK, whatever. In other words, my previous and current discussion about language HAVE SCORED POINTS...in other words, I bring up language discusssions when *I AM RIGHT* and for some reason, you resent this? Why, because I am stepping on your toes? Because I am calling out time and time again the LibTard hypocrites around here?

So sue me...if my only reason for bringing up social issues to to "score points" and prove you wrong, them I guess I'm doing a good job. Thanks for pointing that out.

So spic, chink, honky, slant eyes... None of these are as bad as nigger. Nigger must be the worst fucking word in the language, yet black culture uses it more and more frequently, along with degrading their own women by calling them hoes and bitches.

I'm not sure who is arguing what anymore.

I'm not suggest that people should stop using any words, only that they recognise that some words are racist or sexist or homophobic. If they continue to use them they shouldn't be surprised that people regard them as racist, sexist, homophobic etc.

Trying to argue that it's OK to use the word nigger because others do (including black men) may have some merit, but people seldom have the time to listen to and understand others reasoning for using such terms and instead just opt to go with their instinct 'people who call black men niggers are racist'. Trying to argue against this instinct seems futile.

I'm sure Nigee knew Spic was perjorative and made a joke some people didn't find funny. I don't think Nigee is a racist, but he did use a racist term. In fairness, I think he realises his mistake and this should be a place where people can make mistakes and move on.

Krellin does little to dissuade me from my instinct when he uses the word nigger. I don't think he regards the term as racist or regards it as racist and insists on using it anyway.

Draugnar intrigues me because Instinctively I have never regarded him as a racist, closet or otherwise. Interestingly I think if draugnar and krellin said similar things I would see more underlying racism in krellin's words than draug's. this is a reflection on me, not on them.

I think if I took more time to listen to krellin I'd understand him more and find him less racist - conversely if I took less time to listen to draugnar I'd probably be more concerned about what he says at face value.

You can say that one bad thing is not the same as another bad thing without implying that one of them must be ok. Like, Being punched in the face and being hit in the face with a baseball bat are clearly both bad things and they are clearly not the same. So no, I don't think that list of racial epithets is ok, but I also don't think they are the same as n*. And btw, I have talked to plenty of hispanic folk, so please don't try to make spurious assumptions about my life.

Maniac - the context was that the British govt were at odds with Spain and that we should choose one side or the other. I feigned support for the British govt by pretending to insult Spain, I was ridiculing the idea that somehow the British working class would support Spain when it is and has been the number 1 holiday destination for Brits for as long as I can remember.
Maybe I should use another example. There is a film called The Dictator where the lead character pretends to hate Jews, the actor the lead role in that film is Sacha Baron Cohen and in his career he has made many anti-Jewish comments when he is in character. Is he a bad person for making fun of the Jews and inciting people to sing anti-Jewish songs. Thankfully we use words with a context, it's not just the words themselves that give a statement meaning but the context in which they are used. The word fuck is a great word that can be derogatory or complimentary.
I realise that if you say something and the context is misconstrued it can cause offense but I don't think it is appropriate to tell African Americans that their usage of the word nigger is always upsetting and offensive because in context it may not be, but that does not mean it would not be viewed as offensive if used by a white person or even an Aborigine ..... perception is projection.

On "Elysium" and the Current Trend in "Message Movies/Shows/Books/Etc."
I'm curious if anyone here's seen the film, and if so, what they thought. I haven't...I've read the plot synopsis (though really I figured out most of it from the trailers that ran before Star Trek: Into Darkness) and read/seen reviews...and it seems like the kind if "message movie" I've grown to hate, namely, one with all the subtlety of a sledge hammer. If you've seen the film--fair or foul assessment? And what do you think of this trend in moves/books/etc.?

A Simple Question
Suppose we broke up into real-life nations based on that basic political spectrum test a lot of us just took, so there'd be a Nation of Krellin & Co., a Nation of Abgemacht and Associates from the Green Corner, etc. Aside from the fact every Green Corner citizen (I can't tell if your corner is blue or pruple, krellin--damn colorblindness!) would want to kill me...would this be for the better, Likes with Likes, or would this just lead to worse consequences?
