PBM Game
All this PBM talk makes me want to try it. Anyone interested? I'll be looking for very old and very reliable players to try this with.

Typing is fine. A typewriter would be amazing.

I was thinking postcards, but I thought of the same limitations as you did.

Still need to work out pauses. This game will take at least 6 months, probably a year. Who knows what might happen in that time.

@abge - 3 days after pickup it gets delivered so 4 days total each letter. Figure one day to receive, write, and drop in the next days mail and a 10 day phase gets one there and back. Even at 3 days it would be 12 days to send and receive responses twice. (4 letters times 3 days).

I have a weekend in April and another in May where ai will be out of town but considering mail time it probably won't hurt anything.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

With the cheapest postcards I could find, you only save 1 cent a letter.

Yeah, I'm thinking 2 week phases. Does that sound enough?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
05 Feb 13 UTC
Well, more than 1 cent if you figure you don't have to pay for paper or envelopes.

Probably postcards for quick responses and letter for longer press.

I'd like to PBM. I used to send out colored post cards of the country I was playing. Turkey's postcards were yellow. England and France were both Blue and Germany and Russia were both white. I used to print them of on a dot matrix printer. Could get quite a lot on the post card.
Draugnar (0 DX)

2 weeka should work but the game only allows 10 day phases.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
05 Feb 13 UTC
Yeah, I know. If people agree, I will pause/unpause the game on a 2 week cycle.
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Feb 13 UTC
And we should try making the retreats and builds shorter (say 1 week?)
jimgov (219 D(B))
05 Feb 13 UTC
It's been a long time since I did this. Isn't there a card that you have to send in with your official moves? And that is after all of the press? If I remember correctly, this was a lot of fun.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
05 Feb 13 UTC
That's fine with me.

Gunboat + PBM
2 week phases + 1 week builds/retreats
Pauses TBD

@jim

We'll use the site as the adjudicator, so you don't need to mail your moves to a GM. Mail will only be for press.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
05 Feb 13 UTC
Also, I should mention that I can't start this until the end of February. But hey, what's 1 month in over a year.
jimgov (219 D(B))
05 Feb 13 UTC
Gunboat + PBM? Does this mean that on the site it will not show who is playing? I'm just trying to wrap my head around this before I (try to) jump in.
jimgov (219 D(B))
05 Feb 13 UTC
I think that it would be cool if people on this site could follow the action. Maybe all press could be kept and later scanned in (after the game is over, of course).
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Feb 13 UTC
Late Feb start is fine with me.
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Feb 13 UTC
It just means there will be no global press to read.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
05 Feb 13 UTC
The game will officially be a gunboat, but we will be able to communicate only through letters via USPS.
jimgov (219 D(B))
05 Feb 13 UTC
I think this sounds like a blast. If you want another to play, then I would love to join in.

Do you expect to be around for the next year? You've been gone for a while.

You'll have to send me a PM when all is up and running. I don't do well with digging up the threads.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@Czech

Yeah, I'll let everyone know; don't worry.
jimgov (219 D(B))
05 Feb 13 UTC
I am planning on it, but I understand if you want someone who has stayed here for a while. If you still need someone when it comes time, just keep me in mind.
semck83 (229 D(B))
05 Feb 13 UTC
This sounds like a lot of fun, and I'd kind of like to do it. But I live at different places during the year, and while I forward my mail sometimes, sometimes I don't, and it all seems like it would be kind of a big hassle. So I will sadly probably have to pass this time, and hope that it happens again.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
05 Feb 13 UTC
@semck

I think you'd be great for this. How often do you move? If you live at the same place several months at a time, it should be fine.
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Feb 13 UTC
@semck - About a week before you move, send everyone a postcard saying you are moving and include your new address.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
05 Feb 13 UTC
Waiting until the end of the month is fine with me. Though I like the idea of color coded postcards. So any method of communication is ok as long as it's via USPS?

Can someone draw this game its been on for hours now and there's 3 people lefted and 2 people wanna draw? php? gameID=109880
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
05 Feb 13 UTC
@CF

Perhaps we could limit it to First-Class letters and postcards via USPS? That way we don't have to worry about someone spending tons of money to expedite communication.

@Pj

Please email the mods. Don't hijack my thread.
patizcool (100 D)

I'm in if you'll have me. It seems like a very interesting idea. The only thing I would add is possibly making it Wilson rather than gunboat with the addendum that the only reason for in-game press is emergency pause needed/change of address, etc. If someone disappears due to an emergency in 1907, people are going to be real upset having already put a good number of months into this game

How does one report a dubious competitor?
I'm in a game where one player is making moves that help another player, after that player attacked him from the first move. It may not be outright cheating, but it is certainly against the spirit of the rules. I would like an administrator to look into it.

Read the rules in the first post before commenting on this thread. Breaking the rules of this thread will result first in a warning, and then in docked points or a temporary silence just the same as commenting on any gunboat game would.

To Cathlics - Resigning as Voice of God?
OK...I thought it was, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me..." and the Pope, who --- isn't he like the Voice of God on earth?? -- is too tired to go on? Errr...it isn't about his strength...it's supposed to be about Christ's strength, isn't it? How disappointing is this to Catholics?

Think of this as a wishlist. Please be constructive and positive. I think it would be really good if we can come up with a solid list of 6-10 things that we can slowly work on to improve the site.

I am looking for decent players interested in joining my first game on this site (though I have played Diplomacy before). I hope you will find the settings satisfactory, and the gameplay of high quality. Let us see if I can honor my namesake's legacy.

Wrestling Dropped from Olympic Games.
http://espn.go.com/olympics/wrestling/story/_/id/8939185/ioc-drops-wrestling-2020-olympics

I don't understand how canoeing, handball, badminton, taekwondo, and table tennis can survive as "core sports", but wrestling, that most traditional of Olympic sports, gets placed on par with wakeboarding, roller sports, and squash.

Unpause request, v2
Our game gameID=109269 is having difficulties unpausing. Mod abgemacht offered to help but it took a little while to rally the players to post properly in the chat area.
We've now all posted '/unpause' and would appreciate some quick help. Thanks!
