So I have this huge addition to my family coming in.....
Actually she was born a week ago, but in the spirit of the meme of the day I'd like to announce the birth of my daughter Keilah Rose. 9lbs 13.5oz, 20.25 inches long, cutest thing I've seen since, well, the last time we had a baby. I'm one seriously happy dad.

The Evil Rich
If it is so evil to be "rich" and we must punish them and take a higher % of their salary away from them because the "have too much"...and we love illegal aliens and want to give them amnesty, and they really have nothing...then shouldn't we *all* be giving up our wealth. Compared to *global* standards, we are *all* repulsively rich. Such Hypocrisy! DISCUSS.

Oldest Person Dies
http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/04/us/georgia-oldest-person-dies/index.html?hpt=hp_c1

It's worth pointing out the oldest people because they have their tips and tricks, but they also have some genetic distinction about them that makes them live for what seems like forever. I'd hate to have the title of oldest person. RIP nonetheless...

Program bug?
In World Diplomacy game http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=101672 a fleet retreat was allowed from Vos to DdU in Spring 2013. Is this somehow correct? It certainly seems wrong.

Yes, It's the X201T, I believe. Honestly, unless you *need* the convertible feature (for instance, I wanted to take notes with the pen in gradschool) it's really not worth it. Just get a standard ultrabook and then a tablet if you want to play with touch.

Oh, the Carbon? Yeah, it's Lenovo's ultrathin laptop.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Dec 12 UTC
Checking the stats, that X1 Carbon has potential. But I was hoping to go touch screen for gaming purposes. One hand on the mouse to fly around in and the other tapping the toolbar buttons instead of hitting function keys and having to use CTRL and ALT all the time (both my major games and WoW let me have lots of toolbars visible on the screen).
Draugnar (0 DX)

And as I said, the games I want to play won't run on a tablet. I have an old Latitude E at home that I can remote in with, but it is a Core Duo and the integrated GPU doesn't do well with the newer mid-range games like my two favorites and I'd like to not be constantly taking the office laptop back and forth if I can just remote into it when I need too.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
06 Dec 12 UTC
eh, if I had to guess, I'd say you'd lose interest in playing those types of games with touch real quick...

Oh, and Putin - How about this one for size? My total income from just this job will be $102,500 this year. Add in my side income from Draugnar Productions and I will break $150K.

I might, but I want to try. Kind of like I just set my cellphone to feed incoming calls through my office laptops bluetooth so I could use the PC headset to talk on my cell while listening to music on the laptop and doing webex conferences all without plugging and unplugging the headset from the dock. It's cool. I can even listen to the toons *while* I monitor a conference call that I'm not an active participant in. Then I forwarded my office phone to my cellphone and said *fuck yeah*!!!!!

I have lifelock. Go for it.
Get the woodshop tools.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Dec 12 UTC
I could do both actually. But then there is also the idea of building an actual woodshop (15x20 should be big enough) and using everything on that. I've got plenty of land to put it on (17,000 square feet in the backyard).
Is this an annual bonus, the like of which you won't see again until next end of year? Is this an unusually large bonus, average, or small? The tools and construction of an actual woodshop are a more permanent acquisition that you presumably will enjoy for years to come. The computer is probably more short-term, and you'll be looking for another one with better specs within a few years.

I don't mean to moralize, but please do consider donating some or all of it to Oxfam America. They do good work.

At the very least it would be a wonderful favor to me, and I'm betting you would feel pretty good about it yourself. Whatever you do, be sure to enjoy it!

@THM - 6k of the gross is annual. Part of my deal when I negotiated for the position was 10k in quarterly and 5k in annual. The company also does another annual up to 5k per employee based on profitability. This year we did 20% of corporate profit target so got 1000 each. Our fiscal runs from Oct 1 to Sept 30 and we already have over 1.5 million for the new yrar so a good possibility I will get the full 15k next year too. If the other divisions had done as well as ours, we might have gotten the full 5k profit bonus. But hey, nothing to sneeze at.

@Thucy - I actually plan to give 500 to church for our adopted families and 500 to the local Food Harvest or Meals on Wheels. I always give 10% of al income (even poker) to charity and non-salary income (poker and bonuses) usually gets an extra 10%.

FWIW, I've had many excellent experiences with HP laptops, including my current convertible, which I've had for 4 years. (The "many" refers also to family members, for whom I've customized and ordered laptops from HP). It's a very good brand.

No idea what they're making right now though. I just wanted to stand up for HP among all the shout-outs to other laptop companies.

Congratulations on your bonus, Draug. Sounds like you did great work. No wonder you don't get fired for spending 6 hours a day on webdip. ; )
You'll be happiest if you build the shed or woodshop, imo

If I could press a bit, I want to still advocate for some of it to go to Oxfam America. They are an extremely effective charity that is working on a multitude of worthy causes.
Octavious (2701 D)
06 Dec 12 UTC
Oh, do be quiet, Thucy. We get pestered enough by charities via junkmail and fundraisers in the streets without you adding to it here. The charity a man chooses to give to is a very personal choice and all of us here are quite capable of deciding which ones we most favour, be it Oxfam, or St John Ambulance, or whatever the American version of the British Legion is called.

If I had the choice between a laptop and building a real woodshop, I'd go for the woodshop.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
06 Dec 12 UTC
Oh of course. But since it is a personal choice after, all, and Draugnar is sort of asking us what we think he should do with it, I'm telling him what I think. Just because something is a personal choice doesn't mean you can't try to convince someone to do something lol. Slightly different, those.

Clearly, your rich bastard, you should donate it in it's entirety to the Federal Government to pay down the debt. How dare you flaunt your excess in front of all these damned starving liberals and wanna-be-do-gooders that populate these realms!
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

So I have a few questions.

It sounds to me that you, Draugnar, are doing relatively well. I think you are relatively well off but not wealthy by any means. What do you personally think about a tax rate of something like 35-40% on your annual income? Would you mind paying that same percentage if you make over 2 million dollars per year? Would you have trouble with making that percentage the flat rate if the government gives tax breaks or refunds the middle and low income class so that their actual rate would be lower?

And on a lighter note, I wouldn't go for the woodshop. I would go for a metalshop. That's how you can create rusty shivs and take care of the cheating accusations in the forum. :)
krellin (80 DX)
06 Dec 12 UTC
Curious, Zultar, why does it sound like he is doing relatively well? UAW line workers in Michigan frequently get bonus/profit sharing checks which can be this large...but by all the political rhetoric in the country, poor destitute UAW workers are all one step away from financial disaster. So what leads you to believe Drag is doing well that he should be asked about tax rates fro the rich?

What a wonderful example of bias in American thinking we have here...

I don't usually talk about my academics on here, but I just rocked a grad-level final exam and one of LSU's hardest classes on the same day, with insomnia and sinuses.

So this actually is meaningful, let's hear some things you've been proud of yourself for succeeding at doing!
