Was John Pemberton a seer?
Really, could you possibly imagine a better name for a drink than Coca-Cola in regard to marketing potential of China? They say Jules Verne nailed all those means of transport we use today several decades in advance but Pemberton is the real deal here. Coca-Cola. Brilliant.

Id like to question the random country chooser on the site.
I have got austria and italy more than average recently. Makes me wonder if the mods are rigging it so id leave... :P But really, for those of you familiar with the phenomenon, is the generator truly random like sites like random.org or is it pseudorandom? Does anyone know?

NFL Pick 'Em: Week 8
Inside the updated totals after Week 7 will be posted...as soon as I add them (or someone who already has it added up wants to post if, if they're faster.)

As we're at the half-way point of the season, lots of teams on bye and another week for blow-outs it seems. With the Packers on bye, who will dominate the weak...so--who'll win? PICK 'EM!

Snow Storm
How did people fair in the snow storm? We lost power for about 24 hours. Roads are still pretty cluttered with trees and most of the surrounding towns (that don't get power from the University) are still out of power.

Unless someone has talked to TrustMe or compiled a list on their own and knows what's needed, I plan on cancelling any paused Masters game this Thursday. I'm not really willing to reverse engineer each game to figure out what he was planning. It's been left in the fridge too long, time to throw it out.

I love carving pumpkins.

I don't trick-or-treat, but if I lived closer to my young cousins, I'd go with them.

Who said anything about getting smashed, asshole? The adults in my household dress up and ADD to the fun of the kids. and when I was in college, yeah, we went to parties. And why is that wrong? How is that "hi-jacking" a kiddie holiday, assmunch?

Let's correct your MISUSE of terminology. IF I "hijack" your airplane, I am taking it for my OWN purposes, and simultaneously DENYING you the purpose of the airplane that you were on. You will not get to where you are going, because the airplane is now mine.

In my wildest imagination, I can't imagine how a bunch of college students getting together with other college student to party in costume is going to deprive "kiddies" of Halloween.

Face it, you are just a miserable fucking sourpuss. The REAL problem you have with college students and adults celebrating Halloween is this: Captalism. Halloween is a holiday that celebrates excess (which means none of the fucking idiot OWS protesters should celebrate it....but they willl). It is a day in which you waste time and money on stupid costumes that serve no "benefit" to society, and in which large amounts of unhealthy, unnecessary food-like products (i.e. delicious candy) are handed out in excess. THAT is why Putin hates Halloween.

Dickhead.

When was Halloween declared a "kiddie holiday"? While the trick or treat'ing part of the holiday is geared towards children the actual holiday is based on the idea that on the 31st the world is closer to the spirit world then at any other time. Here's a pretty good accounting of it if you're actually interested. http://www.history.com/topics/halloween

Putin's parents made him hand out candy
Putin33 (111 D)
26 Oct 11 UTC
When I was a kid adults didn't dress up ( in fact kids over the age of 12 didn't go out), and kids went out for hours collecting candy. Now kids barely get to go out, and their adult parents expect candy too when they do. Here the kids have a strict time table in which kids go out for select hours because of all the damn hell raising by the "young adults". Indeed they have to have trick-or-treating on a day other than the 31st, and a day that doesn't fall on a weekend, because of all the crime and hellraising by miscreants.

gramilaj (100 D)

Halloween is the perfect time for literally hell raising.

When you were a kid adults didn't dress up? SO FUCKING WHAT. When you were a kid there were no cell phones and the internet didn't exist....and yet here you are on the internet. Grow the fuck up, Putin, you whiny bitch.

You still haven't addressed what harm there is to college kids having a costume party....and, for that matter, your assertion that "when you were a kid adults never dressed up" is pure and simple bullshit. Adults dressed up in my neighborhood when I was a kid and tried to scare kids. Maybe you just lived around a bunch of people like you - sourpusses.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Costume_party

By the way, the idea of the adult costume party is older than you, dumbass.

I'm guessing nobody is going to point out the irony of Krellin, Mr. Smiles himself, calling people sourpusses. The guy is always one caps locked fun fest away from having a heart attack. His offspring must have a ball getting screamed at every 3 seconds.
krellin (80 DX)

Putin, of course, has no valid response, and thus results to personal attacks. As usual. Sad, pathetic sourpuss.

I responded to the general tenor of comments thrown my way. I forget that in Totalitarian webdip land, any amount of skepticism about you people's aesthetic and recreational tastes is met with the flames of 10,000 suns, and yet I cannot respond with remotely the same level of silly vitriol that is directed at me over a dumb holiday.

With the occasional insult aside this is a pretty decent point. costume parties have been entertainment for adults for generations. They are not something new that came with the increase of "hell raisers". I can't think of any reason why college students should be criticized any more then other adults for attending them. Unless you are naive enough to think that more aged adults do not drink during holiday celebrations.

Jesus, Putin33. What's wrong with dressing up on Halloween when you're older? You make fun of Jews doing it on Purim too?

If you don't want to do it, fine. Don't. Let us have the fun and you be miserable.

Adults have 363 days a year to find excuses to go drinking, act like buffoons, and cause mayhem. If you want to act like a child and dress up as a smurf while the little kids are forced to stay home because it's too dangerous to go outside, go for it. I just think it's the societal equivalent of two 30 year old men refusing to get off the teeter-totter when 8 year olds want to play.

"Let us have the fun and you be miserable."

I'm sure you're a hoot to be around. Anybody who has to literally buy friends via a fraternity and allows people into his parties based on the number of unsuspecting women they bring in so he can hit on them, is truly a prince among men.

As for costume parties, as a whole I never said anything about them. However I do know that Ohio University has so much clean up after halloween they implemented i a halloween fee, it's that gross. Furthermore it seems your 'costume parties' are more often than not used as an excuse to be racist.

I'm going to a Halloween house rave/drugfest as a DEA agent. Complete with: badge and leather badge neck chain, raid jacket (this thing looks so legit its scary), DEA undershirt, ballcap, maglite, tactical leg holster, 24 oz flask for said tactical leg holster, aviators, and mustache.

Going to be awesome.

Zero chance of getting in trouble with an LEO, have already spoken to both departments here.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

I don't even want to know how you made the leap from costume parties, where people mentioned they are going as hobbits and blind referee's to racism.
@Geofram - that's an amazing idea! Where did you get that stuff?

Jesus=Socialist?
Someone I happen to see nearly everyday insists that Jesus was a socialist and/or advocated the philosophical and moral grounds/justifications for instituting socialism. I oppose socialism, but am not particularly religious, and thus not really angered by this statement; nevertheless, many Christians I know have been angered by this claim. Discussion/debate?

Six of the Best
Politicians get a lot of bad press in the modern age, and sadly a lot of it is deserved. The vast majority can be safely ignored without any risk of missing anything remotely interesting or useful to our lives. But in the sea of mediocrity float a few stars, a small number of voices that are worth noting. My question is: which politicians still have the power to make you stop and listen? Lets see a list of six of your best!
