Mod Policies
So, there has recently been some confusion/criticism about how mods handle cases. Without talking about any specific cases, I'd like to review how we handle different cases and the reasons for it. Hopefully, this can turn into a productive discussion, since this site is community-driven.

Why the hell can't people press the ready button in gunboat games?????

its not like they are waiting for an answer to a message or anything
its ridiculous. If they want to wait because they cant play in the next phase or something, then they shouldn't have agreed to play in the game in the first place with that phase length

but he did it to troll, not to cheat, and were calling for harsher punishments then when you cheat with your multi account.

Public harrassment must be the route to go. Lets cyber bully him until he cries. or something.... I don't care. So long as I don't play any games with the dumbfuck.

Of course, Draugnar, that I think they have to punish D33, specially if what he did was with the goal of circunvecting the rules. Of course!
And I am with you, the in-game mutlis and metagamers should have ALL their accounts closed! Of course, and that sadly is not how things are done here...

My point was about priorities, you see, is been so much time that an *obvious* multi happened in a gunboat and it was pointed to the mods. By many players, in fact by all the other players in that game alive at the end. It was *that* obvious, and I will send you the link to the game, you will see it.
Well, for the mods that is not a priority. More than a week later, I ask for it and what happened that there was no banning, and they just answer "We told you we were going to look into it, be patient.". One week. The guys free to join and ruin new games. But if someone trolls in the forums, they get banned in minutes. Minutes. For trolling. Not for cheating; it was the trolling that brought fire upon the account.
That is wrong. Not the banning of Mr.V!!! What is wrong is THE PRIORITIES.
It seems there are previous problems between the mods and this guy I guess, so they reacted in minutes, and they made it public.
WHY, why then not making public ALL the cheaters??? You have to recognize that circunvecting the points limitation is not even near a cheat as it is the in-game multi or the metagaming. The former does not ruin games, the latter completely does.

The mods seem to be more focused on some personal problems with some users than in... well, mod'ing. With all due respect, mod'ing should be neutral.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

To be fair to the mods, banning stuff in the forums is usually more open and close cases, while looking into in game cheating is likely more difficult to unravel.

Guys, creating all of this mess in this thread is just distracting and slowing things down. Also it potentially undermines what we are trying to accomplish in an ongoing investigation.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Oct 11 UTC
Is ee your point K.o.s. And obviously you and the others in the game have a vested interest. I did not realize you were gealing with a specific case at the moment. My apologies. I think this got the attention *because* D33 is an attention whore. He even threatens to return under a new name if they ban him. I guess he doesn't realize they ways of catching returning cheats.

But Tom may be right that the investigation into the game is a little more complex. D33 isn't all that bright and his cheating may have been real obvious plus I know the mods were PMing him (one responded to him in the forum to that effect) so he may have admitted it to them. I somehow expect a plea bargain was made that he wouldn't get banned if he admitted to being the owner of Mr. V. Of course, in the US criminal justice system, the judge is allowed to throw out plea deals and I think that shoud have been the case here.

But I agree that the priorities shoudl always be on games being destroyed before the forums. I just don't knwo that they aren't looking into it and havign a harder time proving your specific multi case.

@yebellz - Are we breaking a rule? No. So go the fuck away and conduct your investigations. Let us bitch and get off our backs. Jesus Fucking Christ! It is only distracting you if you let it. Ignore the thread and don't worry about it. We can bitch if we want and I'll repeat this again so you get it again. *THIS IS NOT A CHEATING ACCUSATION AND NOT AGAINST THE RULES IN ANY WAY!*
Kind.of.slow (746 D)
17 Oct 11 UTC
really??
Should I post the referred game here? It will embarrassing for you... you say publicly that it takes time and it's hard... so the others will think that, well, as Tom put it -and he is right-, "looking into a game cheating is likely more difficult to unravel". But, but... but this is not the case... some cases are very obvious, so please don't counter my speech with "well sometimes it is hard" when the case I am referring to it is *NOT*. But I cannot talk about it on the threads, so you are implying that as a rebuttal. Well, that looks like a cheap trick to dismiss a real concern, yebellz.
I will leave it at that, but we both know that you guys acted brutally and fast against D33, while with the real cheaters ruining the games the treatment is waaaaay less hard.

Really Kind.of.slow, what is hard to understand about this. With every actually multi there are probably quite a few other players who joined at the same time and ended up looking suspicious because they played like cheaters since they didn't know the rules. If the mods when through and banned every player in question a lot of new players who did nothing wrong would be banned. I also find it amusing that someone, like me, who has not donated to the site is complaining about the speed of the mods. This is an unpaid website, you are always free to head over to play dip or one of the other paid diplomacy sites. Then you might have decent grounds for your bitching when your tickets take a while to produce results. I would rather see the forum people get banned first since they mess up the site for everyone, if someone is found cheating in a game the game will not be cancelled anyways so why does the wait matter?
Kind.of.slow (746 D)
17 Oct 11 UTC
jmo, your "you don't pay so STFU" argument is weak at best. I DO have "decent ground for my bitching".
I would go into a rant about all the reasons why that argument is plain wrong, but that belongs to another trend.

Still, the point here are the priorities.
Kind.of.slow (746 D)
17 Oct 11 UTC
D33, I am not defending you, I am defending the wedDiplomacy site. If we don't put our priorities in place as a community and make a common cause, we will never get rid of the real problems, that -in my view, of course- are the games ruined because some idiot (s) find it funny to play using multiaccounts on the same game or just metagaming.
Priorities for our decisions as a community, with a logic on what and why. Plain, fair and simple.
That would make a much better playing experience for all of us.*

* -especially for the ones playing gunboat games!!!
Draugnar (0 DX)

So I now have a mod harrasing *me* over this thread. Seems my thread is somehow interfering with their investigation. What a crock! My posting and giving us all an opportunity to have a bitch fest about a confirmed cheater in our midst and provided a place to rant about our frustrations in general doe snot interfere with any such thing. The mods can just oignore the thread if they like. Isn't that what they tell us? Ignore it or mute it? Well, mods, ignore it or mute it, but don't bring me down, grroosss!

Alright, you've beat up d33 in a public humiliation, and beat up yebellz for a minor blunder in his first week of moderating. Congrats. You all look like assholes.
Yeah, this isn't a "cheating accusation".... but since you want to talk rules, let's talk rules:

- "Your rights: Mods & admins take a relaxed approach to rule enforcement based on mutual respect for other players."

Mutual respect. You aren't giving us respect by the way you are acting and behaving, nor are you respecting the system put in place for us to moderate... you are trying to bias the moderation and punishment for something you aren't a part of nor know all the facets of... you aren't giving another player respect by what you are saying.

- "Help the mods & admins keep our server fun."

This thread is real fun for everyone.

- My favorite one: "9. Follow common sense"

What do you think is more fair: Having a mod who is trained in dealing with situations such as this and knows all the pieces of the puzzle... or mob rule on a bunch of people that think they know what is going on and think they know what punishments should be when they've never done either?

Now, if you haven't been able to tell from my tone, I'm quite pissed about this thread.
I'm sorry that by me replying to it that it goes back to the top.

This is what I want:
Not another word about it in this lynch mob thread.

Don't apologize, don't continue to comment, don't argue with me.
We try to make punishments private so this type of thing doesn't happen. This was an issue that was a mistake to become public and unfortunate to become public. The situation doesn't need a mob to determine what to do.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Hmmmm...

The mods say we are a self moderating forum...

The mdos say they don't want to moderate the forum...

This multi accounting was really a forum related issue...

So we try to self moderate it by shaming the person who was multi accounting to troll the forum...

Now we get threatened by the mods for doing what they originally said they wanted us to do...

Do your worst FK. I'm not apologizing and I'm not breaking any clearly stated rule. As far as keping the server fun, some of us were having fun with this.

Oh, and in the words of the Stones...

You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well you just might find
You get what you need.

I would like to ask everyone to take a moment to calm down. Modding the forum is always tricky because it is so visible and is likely to draw criticism. This can be frustrating to the mods, who are volunteering their time to help make the site better.

To be clear, cases such as this do *not* have a higher priority than cheating accusations; however, they are usually much easier to solve and so get done sooner.

But, back to the matter at hand. Draug, you are right that we like the forum to be as self-moderated as possible. But, the last time I checked, the mods are also part of the community, and their voice should be heard, even if they don't have a stick to slap you with.

I have been watching this case from afar and have been perfectly happy with how ye and FK have handled the case. This thread and the resulting shouting match, however, I am less than pleased with.

Draug, whether or not you are breaking any rules, you are harassing a player who has already been punished by the mods and you're taking up all of our time. You claim to want self-moderation, but you are one of the members least capable of censoring themselves.

When the rules for the site were created, this was a very small community. We've grown since then and perhaps the rules need to change to reflect that. In the meantime, I'd like to avoid this mentality of us vs. them when it comes to the mods. We all love diplomacy and we all contribute to the site, either through modding, donations, or playing.

Let's try to avoid nonsense like this in the future.
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Oct 11 UTC
Hey, I just want to use D33 as a punching bag. *I* never suggested there was a priority issues. I even agreed that the issue with a particular case taking longer was probably due to the complexity of the multis being in a game and having to really confirm it and yadda yadda yadda. you get my point.

And how this is taking up your time (except voluntarily on your part) is beyond me. I don't force you to read it. I don't force you to respond to it. I just want to smack D33 around for a while.

And I will point out again that this thread had effectively died 20 hours ago when D33 go the last word until FK posted and bumped it back up to the top. Had he let it be, it would have remained a dead thread.

As of Friday, I was in four games. The United States Shouldn't Have Entered WW2
The United States intervention in World War Two cost 418,000 American lives. And, really, what did the United States gain from it? Hitler was gone and Nazi Germany was destroyed, but much of Eastern Europe running from East Germany to Russia was under the (de jure or de facto) rule of Stalin and the Soviet Union. U.S. intervention fostered the spread of communism by destroying its primary opponent, fascism, thus setting up the Cold War for the next fifty years.
