Add another great and you get a splash of Irish, Native American, and even French :(. All depends on when you want to draw the line.

I am able to proudly claim that my ancesters have fought on both sides of every major conflict on British soil for at least 1000 years, and in all probability for much longer :D

now that I think about it.. I recall a Chinese version of webdiplomacy.. can't remember the name anymore, it's been maybe 3 years. anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? :\

Taiwan is part of China, so I don't see why we distinguish.

Because it's physically separated from China? Just like people say Alaska or Hawaii instead of the US.

I mean Taiwan is Chinese territory. Distinguishing Taiwan from China makes about as much sense as distinguishing Hainan from China. It's the same country.

I think you'd find people in Taiwan that disagree with that.

well.. no one was "distinguishing" Taiwan from China.. but can you not use geographical distinguishable areas when you want to be more specific? like abgemacht with talking about Alaska or Hawaii..

As someone currently living in Taiwan, I do not feel any PRC presence.. other than taking up 10% of news on TV, and I suppose all the mainland tourists.

But whether it's the same country or not.. (both PRC and ROC governments officially claim Taiwan as part of China anyway) the reality is that they're controlled by different governments, so I don't see anything wrong with "distinguishing" them.

There are Turks in Cyprus who think they live in a separate country. Doesn't matter. There is only one Cyprus. There is only one China.

Yeah, Taiwan may be under Chinese "rule" but part of the agreement with Great Britain is that Taiwan maintains it's own government and economy. It's like saying "Why did you say Scotland or Wales when they are part of the UK?" We say it because it is distinctly it's own country and has it's own culture and we were talking about racial heritage, which culture has a lot to do with. Native Taiwanese are *not* Chinese any more than a Scot is English. They are Taiwanese and the Scot is Scottish and I dare you to walk up to a Scot in Scotland and call him an English bloke. Go ahead. I bet you end up with a broken jaw, cracked rib, and more depending on the individual's identification with their heritage.

OK, I think I may understand the source of my confusion. And, it is nice that zeph is here to help clear things up.

So, both the PRC and the ROC would agree that Taiwan and Mainland China are the same nation, correct? The disagreement is who is actually in charge? Is this still the case of things?

@Putin - Taiwan is not part of mainland China where as the Turks in Cypress *are* within Cypress proper. And up until a few years ago, Taiwan was under the British flag. The flag they fly is irrelavent. They are Taiwanese, not Chinese. Puerto Rico is essentially part of the US, but when we refer to them, we call them Puerto Rican and say they are from Puerto Rico because they have their own cultural identity.

abgemacht, I'm sure wiki can explain much better, but yes, PRC and ROC governments officially claim both mainland China and the island of Taiwan, altho the current ROC party in power KMT isn't really asserting it to appease PRC. There is of course varied opinion in Taiwan (reunification, independence, or the most popular keep-the-current-vague-status-quo, apathy), and I'm pretty sure there are varied opinions in the mainland as well (some find the whole thing old history and irrelevant and don't care)
