Discuss the game "Guuuuunboat" gameID=60001
Hello,
I just had the most fun gunboat game, gameID=60001. The adrenaline is still pumping.
Would any of the player involved in the game like to comment or give suggestions?
Outside observers are welcome as well.

All I know is if France didnt stop playing he would of won the game. Other than that good game and nice win. Gunboat is always fun when you win. But my favorites are when yourself and two other people play like a team and create a perfect stalemate.

Well, here is my summary of what I thought (this is the first time I've done a summary like this, so please be kind in your criticism).
As Turkey, I was concerned at the end of autumn of 1901 since Russia and Austria had me completely surrounded. I had signaled a move to Serbia for Russia hoping to get him to be my ally. Not sure if he got the message.
As luck would have it, Italy attacked Austria, giving me the opening to take Serbia and Greece. Then I got lucky with Rum and Sevas. At this point, England had gotten himself in a tight noose as his forces are spread out everywhere, Germany looked like he was going to take the North Sea and dominate the north. Italy mysteriously destroyed his units in Tyrr and Naples (which made absolutely no sense) and France got a nice smooth ride taking over Italy. And England completely ignored the French threat and gave France his home SCs for a croissant. I thought France would win the game within a few years there, but Germany turned back and kept France at bay while I took Sil and Warsaw.
Then came autumn of 1909. I built an army in Con. And in the spring of 1910, I thought I pulled a couple of moves that prevented France from winning outright: convoying Con to Apu and taking Tyr.
The rest was the two of us taking punches back and forth.
I'm not sure that I could have won the game at the last move if France did get his moves in on time. I'm not sure that France would have won if he did get control of Norway. I think I could have destroyed his army in Liv and defended St Pet, then it would have come down to the Med where I think it would have been a stalemate even with the switching that I did towards the end.
It took some effort to signal to France that I wanted to work with him; he kept attacking Ionian. After Austria perished, I got some help from Russia to fight Germany at Warsaw, thank goodness.

I'll post a friendly comment. Mostly I have a series of questions I'm curious about. The biggest flaw I saw in a lot of people is not utilizing all of their units. In a number of cases, simply using a unit to support another unit (holding or moving) would've paid dividends.

Austria: You pulled out of the gate really strong, but in 1902 you didn't do anything with Budapest and lost control of Greece. From there, it was all downhill. What happened?

England: I was impressed to see 2 builds in 1901. You were bringing it to Russia pretty quickly but I think you could have benefited with a two fleet build in the first year instead of a fleet and an army. That would have given you Brest after a clear retreat. You did pretty good taking Belgium back but should've used Norway to support your new fleet into the North Sea.

France: You had really great timing on pretty much everything. The biggest screw was the NMR. I loved the way you tagged Italy and England almost at the same time and initiated the combats really well.

Germany: You started out very strong and in 1905 I would have easily put you as a strong contender for the win but 1904/5 changed some of that. I think you had a premature attack on Russia given that France was growing strong and had plenty of room to expand. Part of your loss I chalk up to simply bad luck after England kept on pursuing you even with France building a fleet at Brest and moving onto the Island. Tough break.

Italy: Nice opening against Austria. Given it was a Gunboat, I think it was your best option. I'm curious to know why a fleet build in Marseilles by France didn't signal alarms?

Russia: Out of all the players on the map, you had the hardest time. You had too many people wanting your land. I can't really say much here because you didn't have much going your way after the first season. After losing Rumania to Austria and losing the Black Sea to Turkey (although this was somewhat avoidable), you didn't have much opportunity to get back into the game. I'm fairly certain that if this wasn't a Gunboat, you could've turned things around.

Turkey: At some points you were fortunate but nicely played overall. Your biggest success came pretty early in seizing both the Black Sea and Greece in the same season.

France really screwed up with that NMR. Either he is unfortunate for missing the turn due to unavoidable circumstances or he is an idiot for abandoning a game that he incorrectly believe was lost. I can't wait to hear the reason why he left.

The southern position is a stalemate. Turkey has a numerical advantage in terms of fleets, however France could have fell back into a stalemate position, with his fleets in Tun, Spa(sc), WMS, and NaF. He also needs to get that army in Pic down to Gas, but he would have time to do that before you could get a fleet into GoL to possibly threaten Mar. Then the orders are just three straightforward support holds
NaF S Tun, Spa(sc) S WMS, Gas S Mar

As for the North, France easily could have secured Norway last turn to at ensure a draw. Then moving forward, the best case for Turkey would be to see Livonia be destroyed. Now, assume that Turkey is able to pull that off and end up with armies in Fin, Lin, StP, and Mos, while France has fleets in Nor, Swe, StP, and Bal (which has been sitting there to protect Berlin). The destroyed army from Liv and the build from Livonia gives France another two units to work with. He uses one of those builds as an army and moves it into Ruhr (via the roundabout path through Pic and Bel since he can't risk Munich). That would free up Kie to protect Ber, and Bal can nowo move into GoB, where it can threaten Fin. Finland will get destroyed and France would be able to bring 4 units against StP. Game over, France wins.

I think I did the above analysis correctly (please correct me if I'm wrong). I'm describing the most cautious approach, preventing any derailments, so France is able to force the win.

I really want to hear from diplomancer83 as to why he left.

In fact, France could have gotten into position a little sooner. I overlooked that he had an army in Pied, which he should have dropped back into Mar, while Mar moved to Gas in fall of 1914. Then Pic should move toward Ruhr (via Bel) to allow Kiel to protect Ber, which allows the fleet in the Baltic to move into GoB sooner.

diplomancer83 told me that he wasn't able to get his moves in on time. It is not a trivial task getting in 17 orders in a few minutes.
For my own edification, was there anything Turkey could have done better through the game? Please be specific with when, where, and how.

Hello, I am the France player and boy am I surprised to see all the press this is getting. Thank you for all the compliments but I think I just got lucky having a helpful england in the beginning that left himself terribly open to a stab and an Italy that apparently did NOT want to stop fighting austria. I really felt I could have won, but I had one of those situations where you catch something of interest on tv while you play and then you hit refresh and BAM only have a minute and a half to make your 17 orders. Oh well missed orders are part of the game and I am more than happy to walk away with 16 scs. Great Game and thank you Zultar, we must play again sometime.

Alternative-To-Evolution Bill Passed...Should Creationism/Intelligent Design Be Taught?
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-501465_162-20052007-501465.html

Brought to you by the same fine state behind the "Don't Say Gay" Bill, here "the thrust of the proposed law would elevate creationist theories about human evolution to the same status accorded by most educators to Darwin's research." Good? Bad? Should Creationism/IT be taught?

In speaking of obscure ethnic heritages and lineages...
what percentage of what are you? I'm (roughly--we don't have this exactly on Mom's side) 1/2 German, 1/4 Scottish, 1/8 Irish, and 1/8 English. And for some reason, I always imagine it as a pie chart with German on the right half, Scottish in the upper left quadrant, English sharing a side with Scottish, and Irish sharing a side with German.

It seems if you take someone who is 100% Irish, and dilute the bloodline again and again and again over many generations until the original blood is pretty much undetectable, the result is someone whose Irishness is so powerful it is attracts the votes of Irish Americans from all over the US.

Advice?
I'm a relatively inexperienced player, but I really like the game. I just finished a gunboat (gameID=59815), where I was Russia. I thought I was doing pretty well at the beginning of the game, but I ended up just surviving with 2 SC's. I know my two major mistakes were placing the wrong order in Spring 1905, and the failure of protecting Rumania in Autumn 1906. I was hoping that I could get some advice to help me get better at the game. Thanks!

Not sure why rome played like this...
Genuine question, in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=59927 Rome thwarted a pretty obvious attempt to form a stalemate.

Was he merely trying to get payback for past wrongs done to him or was he going for the Diplomacy Points? Are Diplomacy Points valued here to the point that they are more worthwhile than draws?

My friend told me last week about a new diplomacy site http://www.vdiplomacy.com/ its exactly like this one but has dozens of variants (thats for the "V" before Diplomacy). The moment I sae the list of variants i realized that there is absolutely no point in playing this webDiplomacy instead of VDiplomacy. So everyone now go to the site i linked and check it out yourselves. Its awesome!

Build two fleets in St Pete?
So, the game I'm currently playing in is in a situation where I'd like to have more fleets. I was in the process of ordering my two builds when, quite by accident, I see that building in St Pete north coast and also, during the same build phase, building in St Pete south coast is a valid option (ie I'm allowed to make and save that order).
