Moreover, all the cover-up style behaviour that occurred is what you'd expect from the situation. If nothing else, a video of him being killed (which personally I believe was an accident/expected-but-unwanted-side-effect anyway since he would have been even more valuable alive) would make him a martyr, which is definitely not what the US wants.

I have heard (and this is word of mouth) that Osama was killed some weeks ago, and the fact was kept a secret because it was done without the permission of the Pakistani government. Thus, by the time they sorted out their issues with Pakistan and were free to release it to the press, they no longer had a freshly-killed Osama and had to think up an excuse for why. Word of mouth.
