Will you be my friend? (For real this time)
I'd like to start a high-quality game with players I haven't played before. I'd like to get people who are newer to the site involved, but veterans who I don't know are also OK. The game will be WTA and I'd like non-anon, but if people really want anon that's fine, too. I reserve the right not to be your friend : ) If Tallfred is still interested, I've reserved a spot for him.

Traveler IQ - What is yours?
I owe a good deal of my knowledge of prominent European cities to Diplomacy. I was curious as to how well my fellow diplomats would do.
I challenge you to test your knowledge. http://www.travelpod.com/traveler-iq
Post your scores and rage about how little you know of the African continent inside.

The best I've done recently is 402,011 D, falling just shy of making it to level 11. The African and island nations always throw me for a loop.

I made it to level 11 on my first shot with a score of 454592..

Cool site. I'll have to brush up on my world geography.. Russian and chinese cities throw me for a loop.. Africa I can generally guess within a country or two if I don't know the country..

africa wasn't too bad.. it's actually the big countries (canada, australia, russia) that give me problems, since I generally know where a country is.. but I don't always know where in the country the city is.. I actually learned European countries because of Eurovision =p (I'm from US btw)

I couldn't get past level 12. As a Swede studying the Middle East, my biggest problems are actually USA, Canada and Australia. I can pinpoint Djibouti in my sleep but where the hell is Mount Rushmore?

Anyway I'll settle for being slightly worse than Tolstoy.

hmm, i think i have to refresh my african topography. but doing the test twice is easy, because there are not a lot of different questions.

The Europe map is very easy, except the famous places :(. But i could point my residence of Rotterdam by 6 km :)

Great game! I've made lvl 12 all the time last year (learned a lot of places from this game). But I can't play at the moment because I am on an old pc and it's fucking laggy as hell and really hard to click fast and precise -.-

I love how they give all these "tough" Canadian cities. All of which I can place within a couple hundred clicks. Despite not being able to get it to centre on where I meant it to click. (Grr the map is too small.)
Leif_Syverson (271 D)

ditto the map being too small..

all in favor of the map being too small, say "Aye."

*Aye!*
ulytau (541 D)

I've replayed the game after two years to see for myself and yes, I have to say Aye as well. However, if the map was bigger, it would be too easy to pinpoint cities like Andorra or Singapore.

And 590,092.

So many random cities I'd never heard of in Russia screwing me up. If you get a random city you've never heard of in Jamaica or Benin or Laos, it's fairly easy to get right. But russia? Forget it.
First try: 507,090
IQ 124

Australia really screwed me up, as well as Brazil and that one Portuguese city in the Canary Islands, but overall it was pretty easy and fun. Russia didn't throw me off too much. I've studied enough WW1 and WW2 (and Risk lol) to know where most cities are
Draugnar (0 DX)

Brazil is my big downfall. And I was just a few shy of getting level 8, so I didn't even bother to scribble down my score.
gigantor (404 D)
11 May 11 UTC
Even coming from Australia, it's not easy. Even if I know aroundabout where a city (or more likely a famous place) is, it's all too easy to misplace it by hundreds of kilometres.

This time on Technology Weekly
I think it's great that people love talking politics and philosphoy so much, but there is only so much of it I can handle. However, I do know we've got a lot of technologists here as well, so I thought I'd pilot a Tech/Sci spin-off of obi's infamous series. I'll try to find an interesting thing to talk about, which people can comment on, or you can share your own stuff.

The NHL Playoffs Are SET! (Who've You Got?)
All 16 teams are set! The Rangers and Blackhawks just squeak in, the Hurricanes and Stars jsut miss out, and all three California teams, the Kings, the sharks, and my Ducks, are in the playoffs...more Californian teams than Canadian teams! So...who'll defeat who, and when the dust settles, which team will get to drink from Lord Stanley's Cup this year? :D

Will coalition survive AV vote debacle?
What do you make of Huhne going off the deep end on the Tories? I think Cameron's crowd really made a mess of things by attacking the Libs for broken promises when those broken promises helped support the Tories in government. I think an election is likely. What say you?

Capturing pieces
Are there any varients of diplomacy where a unit, surrounded and not able to retreat, are captured rather than destroyed (perhaps to be used as future bargaining chips). I would think that would add alot to the game. Just curious.

Osama Bin Laden Conspiracy Solution
So the thread about OBL has been dragging on with the two sides getting nowhere. I propose a fixed-alliance game of Diplomacy to solve it. On one side will be me, Invictus and Santa Clauswitz. On the other will be Darwyn, Sicarus and mapleleaf. The final unalligned player will be someone who hated the entire thread such as Sayjo or Siddhartha. My challenge has been put forth, I hope you all accept.

I can't find the email for the mods; one of our players hasn't been around for 5-6 days and our next league game has just started, we don't want him to miss out - could this be paused? Thanks heaps, I imagine he should be back sooner or later,
