@AG - How is this a paradox. It isn't an impossible thing, just a logic puzzle that is actually pretty easy to solve. There is an apparent contradiciton if you are a driveling idiot, but no real contradiction or impossibility.

Not to be morbid, but what of a person who has lost a limb, yet they still feel as if it's still there. Would that be a mental paradox, if not an actual statement of sorts?

The haelth care is ascalating Catch 22, but also not a paradox. A true paradox must be impossible.

as I started the thread, let me define a paradox, as many of you (quite naturally) are comfused to the actual definition.

A paradox is a statement, or a group of statements that if taken together have the properties of
1) self reflection (it talks about itself)
2) has circularity (its logic takes it around back to itself)
3) has a self-contradiction (every time you loop around the logic the result changes back and forth, never converging to 1 answer)

The most succinct and beautiful 1 line paradox is the one I mentioned earlier on

"This statement is a lie"

<bad japanese accent> Lets go logic loop!
1) if it is a lie, then it cannot be true.
2) if it is not true then the statement that "I am a lie" is not true
3) if that is so, it concludes that "I am a truth"
4) if it is a truth, then the statement must be true
5) if the statement is true, then it is a lie.
6) jump back to 1)
etc....etc...
Continue until the universe ends.

What digitsu said, or more succinctly - an infinite, unresolvable logic loop.

But part of the definition is an apparant self-contradiction, where the end result could still be a true statement. This is why I would consider CS Lewis' statement a paradox.

Note, that the same as in Diplomacy Paradoxes, you can also have sentences that can both true and false.

For instance:
- This sentence is true.

If it is true, then indeed it is true.
If it is false, then indeed it is false.
