Anyone here knowledgable about statistics?
Normally I would try to find an forum that specilizes in this subject but I haven't been too sucessful finding an active forum that I can post too (the few I can find are restricted to invited members only). I tend to find that there's a lot of smart educated people on this site so I thought I might try my luck here.

Put in your orders!
I hate having to have to say this, but when you have a game where you have no orders: PUT SOME ORDERS IN! Don't finalize them unless you are sure, but ALWAYS have orders in. That way you don't NMR even when you are active. I've been in one too many games where my ally was going to enter in orders late when he had a chance only to get busy and miss the end of the turn. Don't let it happen to you! Always put in orders! Having two red "!!"'s should be an alert to you to put in orders!

All this was started by a player who posts the following in Global of a recent game when another player mentions 'Jews' (Not in any inappropriate sense what so ever) during a move he made.

From ArmaniBoy...."Because you shouldn't be like jews. All jews burn in hell, and that's because they live to kill the Muslims. And I'm a Muslim, so all I can say is: Stop them with words, or else we'll stop them with VIOLENCE (6)"

I didnt make anything of it because i am mature enough to ignore it. I happen to be jewish so i have every right it be offended. Maybe you should quit moaning about someone else's name and take a good look at yourself.

And in agreement with Draug, Chrisp and Darwyn go punish him in every game you can and deal with it in a constructive manner instead of your verbal hate mongering....a good stab in the Marseilles will make you feel that much better.

The world is full of enough shit as it is, lets keep the environment here as happy and friendly as possible and enjoy a good bit of diplomacy.

rkthurston (198 D)

I would prefer the user had picked a different name, anything that helps racist attitudes to exist is not good. I don't believe in banning things, but if I come across such names I would tell the person my views and if I could I'd attack them and ally against them.

But much more worrying to me is why it is OK to use RAPE in your user name. I fear that is because this site has many more males on it RAPE is used in jokes and puns and it really should not.

There is nothing funny about rape, as most victims of rape are women and all the rapist are men we men really should learn to understand other peoples concerns.

again I'm not into banning things, but like others I can have my view

>most victims of rape are women and all the rapist are men

I know a man who was raped by a woman. (I don't know the details of this case, but I can imagine a few ways in which it might be done.)

(Otherwise, I agree with everything that rkthurston wrote.)
Toby Bartels (361 D)

@ warsprite

I think that tongue-in-cheek references to the real-world histories of the countries that we're playing is a different matter. (Of course, if someone wrote ‘All germans burn in hell, and that's because they live to kill the Jews.’, that would be going a bit far.)
Rape doesn't need to be sexual violence towards a woman. Corporations are said to
'rape' the land, governments are said to 'rape' their citizens.

I was wondering whether the original poster is going to answer the charge about his anti-semetic tirade, or whether he will suddenly clam up.

Not ALL men are rapists...i havn't raped anyone and i certainly wont be doing it at any stage, ever thankyou very much. There are plenty of women who rape women and im sure a few have raped men, although its eye watering when you think about how this might be.

Just a question here, and don't flame me for asking.

Is it metagaming to go after somebody because you hate their name, or are offended by it?
zrallo (100 D)
16 Aug 09 UTC
its very simple really... if you dont like his name dont join a game with him... the fact is just cause his name is potentially offensive to arabics or women or people in general does not mean that he hates arabics or rapes people or isn't even a pleasant to be around or have a conversation with... so if you are going to judge someone based on their username on a website then you may have bigger issues to worry about
Toby Bartels (361 D)
16 Aug 09 UTC
@ warsprite:
It's not a reference to the real-world history of the countries that we're playing, as far as I can see.

@ BigZombieDude:
Nobody here said that all men were rapists. (Marilyn French wrote that in 1977, but I've never met anyone who agreed; even French put it into the mouth of a fictional character in a novel.) Somebody did say that all rapists are men, which (while also false) is very different.

Yeah I am German/Czech and people call me a Nazi I just look at them and smile. I mean really is that all they have to be mad at me at? Because I am proud of my Central European decent? I mean really I am not a member of the National Socialist Party so they can't call me a Nazi. They could call me a Kraut but I wouldn't care. Names are just names who gives a fuck.

offensive is the term.. not ironic..
people shouldn't be allowed to have offensive names..
that's common sense.. and if it isn't common sense for you I have to wonder the average age of people here..

WOHOHOHOHOHOHO! Its common sense to not have offensive names! Not true! In some countries people are granted the freedom of speech, though I may not agree with the things they say, they are still aloud to say it. Freedom of Speech gives us the right to say any dumbass thing we want, and not be censored. It may be common sense that it is not appropriate but it is not common sense that he must change it.

Hey.. English language is little bit weird about this thing...

"Arabic Person Eliminator"
that may have two different meanings..
1st: he is eliminating Arabic persons
but: 2nd: he is JUST person eliminator (all-kind-of-persons eliminator), and he has Arabic origin..

So, we can not know if he hates Arab people, or he is an Arab person by himself xD
Toby Bartels (361 D)
17 Aug 09 UTC
Yes, I like that, Knights Dawn. If I may paraphrase a little:
* One should not offend others.
* One should be allowed to offend others.

There is a halfway contradiction there that may violate Splat's common sense. But it is what freedom is all about.

This goes back at least to 1st Corinthians 10:23:
Everything is allowed, but not everything is a good idea.

"There is nothing funny about rape..."

That's false, but not in the misogynistic way you might think.

Rape as a word sounds funny. It has a crass, Anglo-Saxon sound to it, and just like other heavy words like fuck and shit and such it has an inherently funny sound to it. I bet you that someone who spoke no English would find the word rape funny, just like most people in the world find the word "duck" funny just from the sounds.

Also, making a rape joke pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable in humor. We laugh because we think we shouldn't.

It might be in bad taste to laugh about rape, but that doesn't mean it can't be funny. Google "Monkeysphere" to really understand how it's really not so bad to laugh at something horrible if it's not happening to you.

I think Vamos brought up an interesting point about metagaming that no one has addressed. The player's name aside...

I was under the impression (do correct me if I'm wrong), that joining a game with the specific intent of allying with or against another player based solely on past experience was the "definition" of metagaming. If that's true, is it not metagaming to join a game with this player in it, with the specific intent of eliminating him, based solely on the fact that you don't like his name?

Understand that I'm not arguing against a player's right to choose whatever reason he or she wishes when in a game to eliminate another player, but joining a game the player is in with that intent... at best borderlines my understanding of this rule.

"Names are just names who gives a fuck."
Many, many people are offended by racial slurs and names.
That doesn't mean these names aren't inherently bad.
In my experience, people can be offended by almost anything.
Toby Bartels (361 D)
17 Aug 09 UTC
@ PyroMancer:

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with you; that would be metagaming. It's one thing if they join afterwards or if you just weren't looking when you joined, then you get everybody to gang up on them because their name is offensive; if you can do that, then that's fine. But tracking them down to get others to gang up on them doesn't sound right to me.
