@Dr Oct:
If you happen to read this, I'd be curious to hear why is you think Macs are 'useful longer'
Does that refer to the fact that there are vastly fewer Mac models (with presumably fewer incremental hardware advances?), or are you suggesting that they last longer? If it's the latter, then I'd be surprised. One of my biggest beefs with Mac is the poor quality of their laptops (in my experience). I know far too many people who have had innuberable problems with their 'logic' board (aka motherbord) after a few short years of use. I'm not that experienced with PC laptops either, being mostly a desktop user until recently, but the lifespan of Mac hardware seems questionable to me. (And the exorbitant prices for service/replacement parts just adds insult to injury there).
My sister was happy to find that their service plan covered her macbook for the first year, because they had to replace the keyboard.. twice, within the span of six months or less. It was apparently some sort of known manufacturing issue with her particular model/generation laptop, or something.. but again, it made me suspect.
Windows machines have all those issues too of course, but windows machines exist in a lovely world of capitalistic competition, and the savvy buyer can take the time to explore their options and find a product of high quality with just the right feature set for a much better price. Newegg.com is how I built my last windows desktop, and it's where I bought this laptop.. and OMG I shudder to think of what a similarly featured/powered Mac would've cost me.
