To Kestas or Any of the Mods Who Can Help:
I would like to know if it's possible to remove the annoying underscore from the middle of my name and replacing it with a space. I put it there as a placeholder under the assumption that user names had to be all one word when I created this account. I have since found out that this is not the case. Any chance that one of you gallant folks can help :)?

Hey Kestas! (or other admins)
I posted about this a bit ago, but I'm switching emails, so I'm also closing down this account. I've now finished all my games. So, is there a way to transfer my points to a another account I've set up with the correct email? If so, that's great. If not, no big deal, I just would like to play against more advanced players sooner... Thanks!

Deleting an army/fleet
Is it possible to move your own army into your own territory with a support to destroy a fleet that you don't want?
Say, Fleet A is unwanted, so Army B supports Army C into Fleet A's territory.
Will Fleet A be destroyed or will nothing happen and this a dumb thought?

Dear Kestas: A solipsist's accusation
I suspect that I am the only real player on this site, and that every other user is a fabrication created by you. I suspect that you spend all your time attempting to fool me into believing that I am surrounded by real people all different all over the world. Furthermore, I suspect I know you in person. Respond to these accusations.

I'm not claiming that the argument is successful, because it isn't. I just felt a, perhaps pedantic, need to make it clear what Descartes is actually saying.
DrOct (219 D(B))
25 Nov 08 UTC
Fair enough, I just wanted to clarify for others that Descartes didn't actually somehow logically prove that he was experiencing objective reality. But you are right, he didn't just say that and then stop thinking or writing about the topic, and it's worth it, even just for the interest of it, to actually read more about where he went with that line of thinking.

@ belsherj: "It is not a stretch to say that most intellectual pursuits where at one time philosophy."

Agreed. In fact the "Ph" in PhD is a tribute to that.

I wish modern philosophers who deal with the less metaphysical subjects would not ignore the wealth of scientific knowledge out there...

It's why I admire many philosophers today who actually use science to explain philosophic quandaries such as consciousness and ethics and what not, eg. Dan Dennett.

I guessed it and was right: science is overrrated. Science and philosophy are completely incapatable as we saw in the "Which religion are you" thread.

Nice reference to Spartacus too, Sioraf as Killeens lol.

Anyway sorry if I offended you Kestas but one thing is certain: I cannot be certain that I am wrong in this accusation.

Further, the ultimate irony would be if I actually live in a solipsist universe, but instead of suspecting THAT reality, all I can come to suspect is that my diplomacy account on php is alone, when I am in reality utterly alone. Fun fun fun hahaha.

Sioraf - Religion does not necessarily equal philosophy (though Religion could be considered by some to be a subset of philosophy, and philosophy can be based around religion, but not all philosophy is religion). Philosophy is not inherently incompatible with science by any means, though some philosophies are.

It's a film starring Jim Carrey about a man who has lived in an artificial bio-dome his entire life without his knowing. It's about how he finds out that 'the world' revolves around him and his yearning to escape.

It's pretty good, but it ALWAYS makes you feel paranoid for the next week afterwards.

Just for the record, while Descartes may have made some notable mathematical advancements for his time period, his entire cogito philosophy and the resulting dichotomy of mind and body destroy the entire concept of self, the "I" with whose existence he was so concerned. Any philosophy that destroys the self of an individual as he/she is aware of it cannot be taken seriously, as it defies the most basic understanding by which that individual exists. Additionally, once that self is destroyed the new self (essentially some unidentifiable mind Descartes claims to use for thinking) then comes under grave suspicion, considering the fact he cannot either pinpoint this new "self" that is simply a mind not identifiable with anything else in existence and the fact if his own self, with which he claims to think, is so greatly obfuscated, then how can he hope to discern anything about anything outside of this dubious "self"?

As for solipsism, it's an assertion that is by its very nature neither capable of being proved or disproved. One has to either presume the existence of a solipsistic universe or presume the contrary in order to be able to conduct any meaningful discussion/hypothesization concerning the subject. It is impossible to create a meaningful understanding, let alone argument for or against, the notion of solipsism from any sort of point of view that even vaguely approaches an objective one. Therefore, the discussion of solipsism is futile. Should the universe indeed be solipsistic the individual actually existing could never discover that fact with any sort of verifiable proof. Likewise, no individual being could prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the universe in which he/she exists is not solipsistic.

Hi, Steevokun,

While, indeed, Descartes philosophy can be criticised for a number of different reasons (to the extent that few would accept it today), your argument doesn't seem to me, as you present it here, to hold too much water.

The most important thing that Descartes brought back to the philosophical feast was the concept of absolute doubt (which had been quite popular in classical times). Descartes begins with scepticism: how can I know anything to be the case for a certainty?

By your first argument, it seems to be the case that any philosophy that casts doubt on the concept of self is, in some unstated sense, problematic. Why?

Also, it might be nice if you presented an argument for your point on solipsism as well. While I do agree with you about the unverifiability of a solipsistic or nonsolipsistic reality, it might be nice if you presented an argument for the case.

"We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?"
