I'm not really a fan of airing all this dirty laundry. Seems to me mapleleaf was a loose cannon. I really don't care why he left. I wish him luck getting his life together.

As for the moderators...if a user goes off the rails and disappears, or if you feel the need to justify your actions, just quote the policy violation (#1-#4, #5 isn't a forum rule so technically it shouldn't be bulletted) and be done with it.

I was going to let this drop, but since it was bumped, I'll respond to the line of criticism that Putin33 has been harping on for days, that Maple was singled out, and that others including me are given a pass.

It's utter BS, most know it, I'd like to illustrate it nonetheless.

I don't deny that I have been insulting to others on this site, there's no doubt about it, and I should stop, and I am trying to start in this thread. The others you mentioned have been on occasion as well. You have as well in case you forgot...

On the other hand, I don't understand why it is so hard for you, Lando, and Nigee to see the difference between insults given out in normal argument, even heated, personal ones, and the hate that Maple passed off as satire.

Mapleleaf thought being homophobic, violently anti-american, anti semitic, and abusive was hilarious. It could fly before the changes and I personally saw a 4 year run of it unchecked at all. But now there are rules, he wasn't allowed to do it, and I didn't see any reason why he should be able to be abusive toward a group that I identify with, whether as a troll or otherwise.

Brief update:

Putin has been banned from the site. He has not been able to follow multiple moderators' requests not to go from thread to thread and continually complain. This was after he was asked not to attack another user and his family and what he does for a living. He was also unreasonable when he finally did respond to mods' emails, continually claiming that he alone was singled out and that somehow myself and the mod team applied special forum rules to him but not anyone else. He completely ignored all logic presented to him. In the end he was unable to resolve our differences and has basically said that he will continue to do what he does and won't consider changing his behavior. As a result, he has been banned from the site.

I wish him the best of luck in finding another Diplomacy site where he can play and express himself the way he wants.

@zultar Well, Putin33 did go after Krellin in a personal and off-topic way on that one thread. ssorrenn has done this to Jamiet99uk repeatedly. Why not just keep both of them around? Putin33 kept things lively with far more of his posts than the few that were over the line and personal. (And those were just insults, not threats).

Granted, Putin33 is wrong to defend mapleleaf by comparison to krellin; krellin's satirical post about hunting homeless people (none were actually hunted) is shitty satire, but mapleleaf's televised beheading of a Jew a "wonderful development" is just cruel schadenfreude.

Anyway, I'm not sure if Putin33's straightforwardness about going over the "insult line" sometimes in the future should be a bannable offense in a forum where everyone does that, sometimes. Would ssorenn promise to never do it again? I wouldn't ask him to...
