Synesthesia
I have always known that I perceive letters and numbers to have colors, but only just recently have I discovered that this condition has a name - Synesthesia. I'm curious as to whether anyone else on webDip thinks the letter K looks green or the letter A looks red...

Thoughts?

"Green + light-blue = pink => 2 + 7 = 9"

Of course, color is reflected light on certain wavelengths, so it could mathematically work for you in that regard.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 May 14 UTC
There is no wavelength for pink. It is an artifact of our brains, so in this case, it wouldn't work.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 May 14 UTC
And before someone jumps down my throat, I'm not saying Pink isn't a real color; you can certainly make it with pigments. But, you won't fins it in the rainbow, nor do I think any combination of wavelengths make pink.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 May 14 UTC
If you can make it with pigments, then it must have a wavelength (or interference pattern of multiple wavelengths) in some form or another.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 May 14 UTC
As far as artifact of our brain, every color is an artifact as we see wavelengths and our brain interprets them into colors. Beyond my color blindness, my blue may be completely different from what you perceive as blue and we have no way to explain why our respective blues look like other than to say what they don't look like which is also subjective interpretation.
Fishstudios (245 D)

Don't forget that magenta, a pretty important colour, falls within the range of what many would consider pink.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 May 14 UTC
One would expect every color to have a unique wavelength (even if it is the sum of wavelengths), but I don't think this is actually the case because or brains use more than wavelength to perceive color.

I wasn't able to find a Σλ for pink, which is why I've come to this conclusion. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of color could chime in.
Fishstudios (245 D)
22 May 14 UTC
According to Wikipedia, "Unsaturated colors such as pink, or purple variations such as magenta, are absent [from the visible spectrum], for example, because they can be made only by a mix of multiple wavelengths."

Yet we still consider those to be colours (especially magenta, as I pointed out). They're just not "pure colours".
Fishstudios (245 D)
22 May 14 UTC
I guess that's basically what you were saying, anyways, now that I think about it.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 May 14 UTC
Yeah of course they're colors. All colors are an artifact of the human brain. Some are just more artifacty than others.

My question is if there is an unique Σλ that corresponds to pink. For instance, Green (530nm) + Blue (470nm) = Cyan (500nm).
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 May 14 UTC
Yeah, magenta is odd, too. Whereas Cyan looks like the average of Green and Blue, Magenta (Red and Blue) is not the same as the average of Red and Blue's wavelength.

There's no reason for this, that I can tell, other than our brains see it that way.
Wow, awesome. You know it took me quite a while to figure out why monitors were coded RGB, and not RYB, or something more objective. The reason, as many of here probably know, is that the cones in our eyes are RGB and monitors are simply meant to give signals to our eyes as directly as possible.

Well, in CG-dom, Yellow is just bright Brown and brown is Green and Red mixed.
Fishstudios (245 D)

I've always thought of brown as being dark yellow, rather than the other way around.

Your example of 345 made me think of an interesting real-life example, do you associate this image with certain characters?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Belgium

No, It's hard to explain. The orange-brown-yellow => 3-4-5 is just an example that reminds me of my Synesthesia - 345 is a characteristic example of my Synesthesia. It isn't the Synesthesia itself that is triggering the relationship, it's just me remembering that it is an example of my Synesthesia. It's not an association, it's a memory.

How nice, dirge, I (admittedly) didn't expect to meet another synesthete on webDip, considering that it's quite rare (afflicting ~.05% according to wikipedia).

It looks like we're only similar in c, 0, o, and n. You perception of x and z are interesting, could you explain further?

ps, i'm still interested in the answer of my question: what is the most beautiful word?
PSMongoose (2384 D)
26 May 14 UTC
Ha, it appears that I had read it, had been perplexed by it, had thought about it for a while, and had promptly forgotten about it. My apologies.

The answer is I have know clue. There are some words that have pretty sunset-shades, some that are nice blues, others that are all of one shade. But no word stands out as being the most beautiful.

X and Z are the only letters that don't have persistent color for me. With Z, it seems to switch back and forth between black and white, or sometimes it looks striped, like a zebra. Weird. X just is very faint.

I say my synethesia is mild because the colors are mostly faint.

The one other "symptom" I have, is when a hear a loud noise, especially if it is dark or my eyes are closes, I see a complex pattern of black and white nested circles slowly spinning. It just lasts lest than a second.
dirge (768 D(B))
27 May 14 UTC
For me, I see each letter's color, but the color of a word is mostly from the leading letter.
dirge (768 D(B))
27 May 14 UTC
One other thing, is my memory of names and words and numbers is based on color, so I might confuse someone's name based on remember the color of the name but nothing else. Or, I confuse 4, 6 and 9, because, for me, they are all the same shade of yellow.
PSMongoose (2384 D)
27 May 14 UTC
"I say my synethesia is mild because the colors are mostly faint."
Hmm, for me the colors are very vibrant when visualized in my mind. When I read black letters, the letters are clearly black, but there's a sixth-sense haze about them that is colored a certain way. I suppose you could consider it faint for me in that respect.

"For me, I see each letter's color, but the color of a word is mostly from the leading letter."
Yes, it's the same for me... However, there are some occasions like a double-e where the orangeness of the ee stands out more than the leading letter.

"Or, I confuse 4, 6 and 9, because, for me, they are all the same shade of yellow."
This makes me quite thankful that all my numbers are different colors... Looking back on your list, I am struck by the fact that most of your characters are some shade of the yellow-tan-brown spectrum. I suppose I have a couple greens, but you have a considerable number of yellows.
dirge (768 D(B))
27 May 14 UTC
Yeah, odd, especially that I don't even like yellow. But what can you do?
kasimax (243 D)
27 May 14 UTC
are there words that look like their meaning? e.g. - does dark look dark? does rainbow look like a rainbow?

this is so interesting!
