Sniff In the Bathroom Stall...
...and other forms of "alert". Yeah, so I entered the john and heard the inevitable "sniff" from the far (and favored) stall - the, "I'm in here...stay away" sniff to a fellow shitter.

Two questions: What is your preferred form of "alert" to fellow man, and what is your preferred stall?

How to Deal With Heartbreak...
So yeah, it's been a while, and I'm probably looking a lot like Conservative Man with this post, but I just went through an awful breakup and I need some help. I've never really had a father figure and I know this is pathetic, but this is the only place I've found good advice that I haven't had to figure out on my own...

Police will soon be able to shut your car engine off

Kind of worrying. No one should have the authority to control your property like that.

Genetic Engineering for monkeys, *by* monkeys?
People worry about technology taking over the planet. But now we've got cut-and-paste monkey DNA. If they make this easy enough for the monkeys to do themselves, we might find that they're not squeamish about global domination via genetically engineered super monkeys. http://www.theguardian.com/science/2014/jan/30/genetically-modified-monkeys-cut-and-paste-dna-alzheimers-parkinsons

Scientific basis for communism
I can't find any evidence of a scientific basis for communism. Is it the case that communism requires historical determinism to be true though? Communism only seems to consider "false consciousness", a view that history is static, "class consciousness", a view that history is dynamic and deterministic, but makes no room for history being dynamic and unpredictable.

Board Games: Twilight Struggle, 7 Wonders, BSG, Chess

Card Games: Dominion, Android:Netrunner

Computer games: Civilization (I'm close to owning all of them), DotA 2 (though I've only just started), the Total War series. Lords of the Realm II.

Let's see: Just about anything I can get my hands on to try in board and card games. I really love Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Stratego, Chess and Phase 10 in particular.
I'll at least try the computer strategy games, but I mainly stick with Civ and LoL.
I really like Master of Orion 2, though I've never had the opportunity to play it online. (Something to do with only picking it up in 2010) Given there's some other people who play it, is there any chance I can shamelessly use your thread to try and get a game together? (I have the 1.40 unofficial patch + DOSbox, and am familiar with how to join/host server, but am not familiar with bypassing my own firewalls if it is likely to be a problem.)

@orathaic: I've heard that the GoT board game has balance issues sometimes with only the setups for fewer players, is this a fair comment?
orathaic (1009 D(B))

I'm not sure i've play-tested it enough to comment on any balance issues, i know they've updated it recently to a second edition, so it may have changed.

@Putin

Yes I agree it does a good job of encouraging a variety of unit types, unlike most games.

I also had a problem with Germans having a great advantage, being able to travel over more debris than Russians.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
27 Jan 14 UTC
@mendax, also the boardgame which slightly inspired the game of thrones boardgame is completely unbalanced, it is called diplomacy.
Putin33 (111 D)
27 Jan 14 UTC
Not sure what would cause that. Germans have no advantage moving through blocks, mines, or wrecks, per the rules.

Board games: Settlers of Catan, go (weiqi)

Video games: recently I restarted playing Myth 2. It's a really awesome real-time tactical game. Anyone else play that?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
27 Jan 14 UTC
@Putin

I thought Germans could move through 2 pieces of debris and Russians could only move through one. Perhaps we misunderstood that rule.
Putin33 (111 D)
27 Jan 14 UTC
The only thing I can find is a stacking advantage. Germans can stack 3 units on a hex, Russians can stack 2. This would help with moving through wrecks & blocks.
ghug (5068 D(B))

Ora, Dip's imbalance isn't really there. If you can befriend people and not be stupid tactically, it doesn't matter who you are. GoT on the other hand, is almost impossible to play if you start as the Lannisters and more difficult than it should be for a few others. The balance issues get even worse if you try to play with fewer players.

I don't think anyone's mentioned Twilight Struggle yet. That's a great board game, and it's available to play online too, I think.

I also like Game of Game of Thrones, though I agree it's nearly unplayable without 6 people.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
27 Jan 14 UTC
You can still befriend people in GoT, but i haven't played it in a long time, so i may be mis-remembering.

Twilight Struggle is not worth the time investment.
Celticfox (100 D(B))

@Abge I think Maurynna but hell I can't remember since I haven't logged in awhile. Been playing other things if I've had the time to play.
ghug (5068 D(B))
28 Jan 14 UTC
You can befriend people in GoT, but there's a lot more damage one person can do against another before anyone can bring assistance.

I don't remember the details, but I remember that almost every game I played ended in quick dominance of the Lannisters by the Greyjoys, the exception being a game in which they allied and then both did very poorly. We began reacting and trying to prevent this from happening because it left everyone else at a disadvantage, and we found that it wasn't really doable.

Lots of great mentioned. Gotta add to the Settles, 7 Wonders, Agricola fans. One I haven't seen mentioned that causes A.P. in most players (Which is what makes it fun for me) is Dominant Species.

Oh, A.P. is analysis paralysis

@joshuavoskamp - Go is most definitely not Othello.

Othello (a.k.a.. Reversi) was invented in 1883, and involves flipping pieces to gain the most of your colour, white or black. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reversi

Go is an several thousand year old game which involves playing to gain more territory than your opponent. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_%28game%29
Putin33 (111 D)

I have two sets of Go but nobody to play with and no idea how to play. It seems quite complicated.

*slaphead* - I should have remembered Sopwith. I'm GMing this over on the vDip server, here is a link to the first game played:
http://s17.postimg.org/xnmm57dvj/allturns_END.gif
and the game currently being played:
http://www.vdiplomacy.com/wiki/index.php?title=VSop2
rules are here:
http://www.vdiplomacy.com/wiki/index.php?title=Sopwith

@Putin - the rules of Go are really quite simple, all you need to remember is that your 'units' need to breathe to stay alive - or they are taken prisoner by your opponent. That and always keeping in mind that you are playing for territorial control. The other rule you need to remember is the 'ko' situation, but a little googling should bring up the rules for you. The best way to learn the game is to play it, and figure out your strategy as you go.
mendax (321 D)

@Siddhartha - I think I mentioned Twilight Struggle earlier, but it certainly deserves more love.

@orathaic - why do you consider it not worth it?

I'm thinking about doing something different for Valentine's Day - no jewelry, no crappy yet expensive food, just something fun and special. Does anyone have a cool idea? I'm not really on a tight budget but let's just say a glass castle under the stars in the Swiss Alps is not an option.
